@@TomTKK you can also contact the property management company and ask permission to drill and run a cable. Otherwise just drill and pay the fee when you move out. If someone did it the way you described they probably wouldn't class it as damage, since it looks so tidy. Its actually useful to have grommets covering a hole between rooms.

You can often get away with pulling the carpet back in small sections with long nose pliers (or run a screwdriver under it) where its tucked against the wall between the smoothedge and the wall, pop your cable under then tuck the carpet back on top. As long as you don't remove it from the smooth edge nails it goes back as if no one was there and the cable is completely hidden. No good for your wooden floors though!

The Adhesive clips are a genius idea! I have a pet bird and I do not want him to chew on the cables so those adhesive clips are a great way to keep the cables away from his reach :D thank you!

Hayden, that's about the best way to deal with it considering your situation. You could try a mesh setup, but unless you're using wired backhaul, it wouldn't be any better than (and probably worse) than the way you did it. Now - if you take the main cable from your NBN (so precious) box, and then set up mesh in the house - that'd be possibly a little less cable, and potentially better wireless performance across the house. Regardless, good video mate!

If I were the landlord, I wouldn’t object to getting a tradie in and getting him to run the cable from the garage through the ceiling and terminating in a nice professional rj45 socket in the living room. Maybe suggest going 50/50 on the cost. You won’t be the only tenant who’ll want this. People expect data now like electricity or gas.

Would definitely recommend using a slimrun cable and probably a color more akin to whatever youre putting it on. For white walls try to find a white cable, brown for wood, black for darker surfaces in general. With a slim it takes up less room and should be able to hug corners tighter to make the cable even more invisible. Id also try running it along the edge between the wall and ceiling if possible, could potentially make it even harder to see or just overall less distracting and hazardous

This is Genius, don't know why I went thru the trouble of drilling thru drywall, climbing and crawling around up the attic space. Fishing the cat 6 cable, and patching, repairing and paint all the holes i made throughout the residence. 😅

Lead in from the splitter in the street will be coming upto the garage where the PCD (grey box on outside wall is) then single lead in coming into the NTD.

annnd reply under wrong account.. ahh wells. Installs are done to a timeframe and also depends on internal pathways / what is alread pre-existing at the house for the installation to be done. they can be relocated, just costly.

I think minor correction in video. NBN does not install/or even recommend install NTD to furthest point.. They install to the shortest point lead-in from street.. Customer has the choice to place it at their own peril, but it is not NBN's decision.

Nice video - but I do the whole house network a different way. I have an Orbi mesh network system. It is a little more money, but the backhaul of the mesh is actually faster than the ethernet that I had run throughout the house when I moved in. I now cover my whole house and detached garage with wireless. The system is a little pricey, but it does save a lot of frustration. You can also buy a smaller version (1 satellite vs 2 satellites). I have almost 30 devices attached with no problems with speed. That is a mixture of computers, Raspberry Pi's, hotspots, TVs, and even a couple of NAS units. Yeah, I have amassed a lot of technology :D

To answer your question, the install the box there because it is typically the closest location to the box out front that feeds your street

Yeah... but it's lazy by the installers. Makes more practical sense to move it further inside the home. They just didn't want to waste too much money or time on extending the fibre

@@HamRadioDX but if it's a rental then the ISP will have to re run the box with EVERY new resident. I work for an ISP and I do my fair share of installs. There are some houses that have rotating residents. And seeing how you never actually lose money on the actual install it is a huge waste to constantly reinatall to a new location dependin on the new customers tastes. However on the flip side we usually just install ours in the center of the house (as much as possible) that way our wirless will most likely reach the whole house no matter who moves in. Most of our customers use mainly wireless anyway.

It is innately stupid that buildings these days are not built with integrated cable pathways of which we have had australian standards going back to the early 90s, originally AS-3084 (for pathways/ducting) and AS-3080 (integrated cabling) and AS-3085 (for documentation). These in their current consolidated publication are now ISO/IEC 11801. Unfortunately the supplemental provisions in these standards are voluntary and builders seem to want to minimize up-front costs leading to unnecessary costs retrofitting a building with pathways which due to the additional costs is usually done ad-hoc thus defeating the purpose of the voluntary standards making buildings receptive to and flexible in facilitating wired communications services. The Mandatory cabling standard (TS009) only address safety to users, equipment and installers/technicians and therefore requires a registered cabler to do the installation and maintenance work in accordance with Australian Wiring Rules. In this case the cable passing through duct and attached (although by stick-on clips) makes the cable fixed premises cabling requiring installation by a registered cabler or to be done under direct the supervision of a registered cabler with endorsements relevant to the cable installation.

Avoid Cat5 cables if you can. Cat6 is way better shielded from an RF perspective. I was having problems with birdies etc replaced all cat5 cables (even short jumper leads) with Cat6 and problem 99.9% gone.

Pretty sure CAT 5e is just as well shielded. Normal CAT 5 is very old now.

I doubt cat 5 or cat5e compares to 6 as I'm pretty sure all cat6 was required to be more of a plenum rated for fire resistance due to home fires not to mention the data transfer speeds at greater distance.

Yeah most go cat5e by default, I used to use cat6 then saw cat7 so on that where I am but since swap to cat8 where I am and yeah I know my fiber speed is only 1/40 of what cat8 can handle

I live 30km from Melbourne cbd and I’m not eligible for nbn. I’m supposed to be happy with fibre to the exchange which goes though the trees for 3km. I have had to get fixed wifi and have their repeater on the hill for free 100/50.

buy outdoor rated Cat 6 and run it outside a window to another window, like how you would do for an outdoor tv antenna. Anything over 60 feet get 24 gauge or thicker. if it's patch cable, it will be too thin and you will get a lot of interference if the Cat 6 runs past electrical wires

I am just lazy so I just lay it on the floor. Which works out for me. I take my laptop from my bedroom to the kitchen without unplugging the ethernet and pulling the wire across the house.

Powerline adapters are a thing, and work surprisingly well if they're configured and installed correctly. Older adapters are prone to noise, but newer, high quality adapters with power passthrough are a very good substitute nowadays. Obviously mileage may vary, but every solution I've employed has delivered almost the exact rated speed.

Yup, Powerline adapters have been my solution. Same issue as him here, however I did a 50/50 with a 10m Cat6 cable. Running a powerline to move the router in to the house from the garage, then an ethernet cable from the router to my setup.

it is if have power points at right level.. Otherwise the built in hub ones, like i mentioned above, are only option... My power points are 4x together, not seperate, (older house), and just above the skirting, so plugging these fat bastards in will occupy adjacent, so one left unused. Probably ok if you can use power strip/ extension., iF they can even be plugged in at all,, but the points really are not that high from the skirting. And running extension cord for each, just to get newer gigabit devices probably will sacrifice throughput anyway... their designed to be plugged directly into a wall socket for best performance Quite frankly, their not cheap, and paying $100, just to 'test' is not an option. really

I have a TP link deco P9 with powerline, but it's powerline backhaul tops out at about 150 megabits even when to access points are plugged into the same electrical socket

I have a 500mbps connection and the powerline adapters ended up with 60mbps throughput and 100ms latency. It's less than 30ft run in a closed circuit. You are completely at the mercy of the wiring. Not worth the $100.

They put the nbn box there because its the cheapest and easiest place to put it. Fiber can only bend like 3 times i think so if you wanted it in another room you would need more conduit and more fiber and more labor, wich would raise the total build cost. australian homes are expencive enough so thats the way it is

I required LAN downstairs regardless of mesh WLAN, mainly because too many devices which don’t have WiFi. Plus I’m QRV on 2.4 GHz. The less noise on that band the better 😉

Looks like a right mess. I would have just run the cable out of the garage then straight into a Mesh system setup. get 3 repeaters and you should get coverage round the whole house

Why cannot first locate that in an ideal location from the first place??? Also every house should have Ethernet wiring just like elec... and all need to be done is plug an enthernet cable into the wall. The thing about Australia is that uni or work places have good wiring except homes... homes are just built not so great unfortuntly.

Tried mesh. Its a total scam. Gonna do this. Ethernet switch and the have a modem closer. Would be much more cost effective and faster too... Were not ready for the modern world.

Same issue here. Other options like Ethernet over power line were not worth it either.

Not sure if the building codes and standards are the same but here in the USA coaxial cable is standard in every room in a home since they were basically invented. Get a moca adapter it uses the existing coax cables in your walls to take your internet signal from your router/modem and turn it into an ethernet signal plug in a cable to the adapter with a switch for more ports and get some Velcro tape and hide it behind your tv. That way you don’t have to run that cable inside and it’s more Wife approved.

This is not a good option: MoCA adapters usually have a horrible latency, horrible jitter and are very expensive. I use a few of those myself in the places with no cat5e connectivity and its really not a good option.

@@audrunasgruslys9243 I've never had any problems myself but I guess everyone's internet is different. One thing I will say is that if you don't have a separate modem and router for your main internet connection everything will be slow including MoCA and non- MoCA devices. Also if you split the coax too many times it may not have enough bandwidth so you may need a coax booster or a coax splitter with less open ports on it.
