We were given this old network storage device, which is called a LaCie 2big Network. It seems to work, but I can't get it to factory reset. It's also blinking a code that is not explained in the available documentation. If you are familiar with these, we could use some advice.

Given the device's resemblance to the HAL9000, the error code it's flashing is probably something along the lines of "I'm sorry Florence, I'm afraid I can't do that." 😛 Jokes aside, the only network drives I'm familiar with are from Synology, so unfortunately I can't be of much help there.

That's the first thing that came to my mind was that it reminded me of HAL9000 whenever the red light is illuminated.

I have a couple 4big drives, as a DAS. That means 1 or more drives are failing. You'll need to find how the drive is set up (is it RAID'ing) need to replace them both and download a factory TFTP recovery app to reinstall the NAS software. Be sure you find a drive that is of a similar model and vintage of firmware; because if you get a brand new off the store shelf of a SATA drive, the Lacie may reject it. EDIT: I missed the final third with you logging in. Something else is wrong.

Here's what I can think of: 1. Maybe there is a CMOS / clock battery inside that's dead and it's causing issues (I've seen some wierd things happen in computers, like not being able to access the BIOS, freezing at startup, etc) 2. Maybe try removing both drives and booting it that way 3. Remove both drives and put in a single known working drive to see if it changes

With devices of that age, in a dusty environment like server racks, it often happens that the buttons don't work properly anymore. I would open it and swap the pushbutton and then try again. If it's a weird proprietary button, just make your own using 2 solid core wires crossing each other and touching when you press. I literally repaired an OEM PC power button for someone like this LMAO.

I have one and Seagate stopped supporting the hardware and software for the device a year or two. For practical purposes it is a large paperweight.

From what I can tell these only have half a meg of flash onboard so if you wipe the drives you probably end up with a factory reset. But then you'd need to restore and who knows if you can do that?

Pretty sure those have a TTL serial interface (3.3V) on the pcb for serial console access. IIR though, the pins are not right next to each other on a nice neat single header (or pads for a header).

Sorry if you said it and I missed it, But did you try logging in with admin for both the user and password? To reset it should just pull the power and hold the button then plug it in and keep holding until it turns red don't press and release at first.

True -- the default login in supposed to be username & password of 'admin'
@themaritimegirl
@themaritimegirl Год назад
The defaults don't work. Yes, those are the instructions I followed. The LED never turns solid red.
@1HandsomeDevil
@1HandsomeDevil Год назад
You followed all these steps to try and get the 'factory reset' to take effect? ... Press and hold down the front LED button. Without releasing the front button, turn the product on using the power switch on the rear of the product. Keep the front button pressed until the front LED becomes solid red, then release it. The LED will blink red. Within five seconds, press the front button once to confirm the reset. The front LED will blink blue for several seconds. The front LED will blink red/blue during a system reset. The LaCie 2big NAS is ready when it reboots and the front LED is static blue.

The 2big NAS is different from the 2big Network, but I think the instructions are the same. The LED never turns solid red.
@1HandsomeDevil
@1HandsomeDevil Год назад
@@themaritimegirl - You don't want to have a situation where the big light on the front stays a solid red. A solid red front button in combination with flashing blue in the back indicates critical overheating. A solid red front button in combination with solid red on a drive means data loss.
@themaritimegirl
@themaritimegirl Год назад
@@1HandsomeDevil You wrote above "Keep the front button pressed until the front LED becomes solid red". So yes, that's very much what I want. But it's not doing it for some reason.

The only issue I've ever had with LaCie external drives; I have two One being a 1TB Big Disk FW800 version. It had similiar but not quite the same issues. SO this may be completely unrelated but have you checked the external power supply (if it hs an external one) that it came with. Mine was genuine; but seemss to be a fail point; after I'd done some googling.

the device documentation talks about some kind of recovery mode using LaCie Network Assistant (LNA). did you tried that?
@niconicosss
@niconicosss Год назад
also with a multimeter did you check if the button is actually working good?
@themaritimegirl
@themaritimegirl Год назад
The LNA is an extremely old program (it would have shipped on a CD-ROM with this drive), and I can't find a download for it unfortunately.

Somebody else said it was the CR2032 and while I can't say for certain I like that idea in terms of troubleshooting as I have seen other RU-vidrs with different devices that went haywire until the battery was replaced.
