It has now been two weeks since I found you guys and just want to say again THANK YOU for the entertainment and keeping me company while I knit. Is there anything that you guys can't do?? Ray your sunset hat looks like a life long professional knit it and Kevin your dying skills are already professional. Love all of the colors you have done. Very jealous that you literally can have any colorway on any base and weight at any time. Looking forward to the next 100+/- episodes.
Thank you so much for checking out our channel, watching and commenting, we really appreciate it. That is such a fun knit, we both want to make another one.
You two are great! Kevin's laugh. I love it. It's so warm. And Ray, how quickly you've caught on to all this knitting jazz. No one would ever suspect you've still a relative beginner.
Watching from New Zealand. Bed bound with damage from prescription drugs and knitting has kept me going for the past two years or so. I've been learning about yarns and their suitability for different projects - your discussions of yarns is really helpful. I've binge-watched all the episodes from No.1 in the past week and have caught up with you now. So funny at times (the hat episode had me in stitches) and lovely to see you just being you and having a knit-natter.
I use a salad spinner to get all the excess water out of the yarn after I dye it. Cost was about $15. I just bought some yarn to dye from Knit Picks. I get some of my dyes from Dharma Trading. Try dyeing with food coloring. Its fun too!
Kevin I actually said Ooooohhh out loud, alone on my couch, when you brought out that blue DK! LOL. You are making fantastic colorways right off the bat! Can't wait to see more. Have you watched Bakery Bears? Kay is showing how she made her hand dyed yarns that she used to sell. It's good info on how she keeps the skeins from tangling, how she adds certain colors to achieve a certain look. I don't think anyone would be looking to match her colors, but her info on how she uses the dyes is really interesting. She did one in episode 166 and episode168, and are doing that feature every other episode. They have timestamps in the show notes so you can go directly to the section. Just FYI if you are interested....
Poor Kevin! I feel ya - it is slippery sliding going around here in Indiana. We still have about 8 inches on the ground. Lots of shoveling and back aches. Tending my 28 chickens has been a challenge with the near zero temps. Love all your makes this fortnight. Looking forward to the live next week. Great “ 9 inch circulars whispering this episode” - I love it ! Gotta go find that cowl pattern from Max and Vincent - really enjoying their new podcast. Love you guys , Julie from Indiana
I just subscribed, but have been watching for a few months. I’m a cross stitcher, but enjoy watching the knitting and crocheting by others. I also love to see the dyeing. I also dye fabrics and floss. So many talented people . Oh, I slipped on our deck stairs a few years ago, wearing tennis shoes, ice on the stairs and down I went. I ended up breaking my right wrist...ugh. I did cross stitch, slowly, with my left hand...when there is a will there is a way.
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing!! It means the world to us! Sorry to hear about your fall, that’s awful 😞 But you’re right, where there is a will, there’s a way ❤️❤️
So, after you have talked about it so much, I have started to watch season one of A Discovery of Witches. I am only about 20 minutes into the first episode, and I am already hooked!!
Love your podcast! You guys are so great to listen to and watch. A fun way to start the day! Beautiful Dyeing Kevin, great knitting both of you. Ray, really nice cowl for your Mom. what a good idea to adapt the pattern to a cowl. Gather is another fun tincanknits hat/cowl pattern too. . Stay well! Norah Gaughan published a booklet some years ago called Men. Some nice knits
I have done some yarn dyeing and spinning so I hand wash a lot of yarn. I place one skein at a time in a laundry net wash bag and place it in washing machine on "DRAIN AND SPIN" setting only and it dries the skein so much faster.
I found this when looking for a sweater for our Charlie.( the word dog is a bad word, and we have to spell walk and ride, he knows and life becomes a shit show, Is anyway, BUT). "Men Who Knit & The Dogs Who Love Them". Thought I could share a picture of the book, but lack of tech skills won. Sorry. You are ALWAYS a joy to watch. Thank you for brightening the day.
Ray, your Montrealer is turning out so great. I am still swooning over how great the greens look together. Kevin, your Montrealer is turning out great, too!!! Once you think those rows back, you will be zooming along once again.
Kevin, your dye jobs are SPECTACULAR! You are a natural and keep going. Love your process. Ray....love you and both of you are so enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing!
I had a battery operated snowblower. The only reason I don’t have it is because I moved to an apartment. It was fabulous. If you want to extend the life of the batteries make sure you keep them inside the house. Oh my goodness your dyed yarn is gorgeous! What a fabulous colour!
Greetings from up the road in Fairfield! I started knitting a few months ago and I've been going through the episodes from the beginning. I'll be caught up in another week or so and then maybe I'll stop by for the next live! Love the Volcano Trail Cowl that Kevin finished ... so many things I want to try to knit on my own.
You guys are makin' me blush😊 I don't want them to "redo" it but I want more Labyrinth!!! No one can replace Bowie....of course. However, I would love to see a story of how "The Goblin King" came to be ....or something like that. Your fade looks great! We keep our house on the cooler side too....growing up my mom called it "cold heat" 😝 That blue grey😱GORGEOUS!!! Awww...the ornament💜I love that our reading style is so similar! Just snagged The Whisper Man👍
Kevin said “motoring” & I have been singing the chorus to that Sister Christian song from the 80s all morning. Hahaha Ray, I now know what if feels like to have Diet Pepsi come out your nose. That “sorry mom” sent me! 🤣🤣
Hey guys! Really enjoyed playing bingo with you last week. Aaron and Chip are so much fun. I have been a fan of your podcast since the 1st episode! Kevin, your dye colors are just fantastic. I too am looking for that perfect Zoom knitting group. I have found that the library systems have knitting groups and are on Zoom now. They are fine groups , but not necessarily a perfect fit for additional common interests besides knitting and a like sense of humor. What can I say, Chip and Aaron make me laugh constantly. The quest continues!
@@NeedlesattheReadyPodcast You’re welcome! I have also gone to a local knitting group before COVID I had found on the internet. Many meet in restaurants such as Panera.☺️
Got to spend last night working on my Icelandic Sweater and watching episode 31. Kevin, the socks... I could tell something wasn't quite right, then it hit me! Then I realized they were knit top-down, not toe up.... oh no! I have the same book "Knits Men Want" in my library. I got it when it first came out and I know I have not made a single thing from it. I will have to dig through my library for Men's Pattern books to see what I have. I'll add that to my Episode 10 of Boozie Bears list. I dabbled in hand dying myself and found adding additional ties to the skein helped prevent the skeins from becoming tangles messes. It was always worth the effort. Vince
Kevin!!! I absolutely love your dyed yarn! All of the colors are truly beautiful. The blue and the green together - GORGEOUS😍 You have a hidden talent. Great podcast guys♥️
hi, boys! you two are just what i needed this morning, Kevin, you gotta wear shoes to clear off the steps! ( i said that in my Mom voice!) i also recently used the mattress stitch to seam my Gd's sweater vest, it's kind of magical like turn a heel! the cowl and sweater are great, the socks made me smile, as long as your bind off is loose enough, i'd pick it up and continue up to have them the same length! laughed when you boys talked about drying your knitted items, my hubby days the heat registers spend the entire Winter covered in drying socks, mitts or hats, one of the good things about century homes!Ray our sweater is coming along and love those socks! looking forward to the live next week, stay well!! ♥
Thanks Lynn! Mattress stitch is totally cool how it just “zips” up the fabric...so neat! Glad you were able to join us, look forward to seeing you next week 🥰
No!! No remakes!! They always ruin it!! 😂🤣😂 Kevin for the sweater, put in a lifeline & frog!! I guess I'm just weird with sweaters, I do the sleeves before the body, that way I'm never worried about running out....I actually have fixed 12" circulars... I'm trying to do 2 hats a month, I have a whole binder of patterns & starting at the top........ kinda. I'm on #4..... even though I have 5 other projects started. 🤷 Nope, not a winner...nor did I expect to be.....😉 The yarn is gorgeous!!! I need to get dyeing again, but I need bare yarn too, have to see what knitpicks has in stock...they were out of a lot... Get removable zip ties, that helps to keep from tangling & makes it easier to pick up...and you can put your hanks in a lingerie bag and use a spin setting on your washer to get the access water out, I do that all the time.... ok, it works for a top loading... Oh, Kevin, no more falling down stairs!!! Oh, I'm in central California, we're in extreme drought, luckily the Sierra Nevada mountains are getting a lot of snow..... Yosemite is buried
You guys make my day! I especially like when Ray leans into the mic and says “9 inch circular needles” lol it’s so funny! As soon as you started talking about what shows you would like to see back I was thinking Bewitched as well! And I’m way older lol. Always a pleasure to watch you too! And that blue colour you dyed would look great in my stash!!
Your sweaters are coming along beautifully. Kevin your yarn is beautiful. Tin Can knits have sweaters in their book for men. That’s the only one I know of. Thanks for the 9 inch chuckle Ray. I’m in the same Thursday knit night group as you and that’s the only one I know of. I don’t know anyone that knits except that group.
I love the blue gray yarn, it turned out very well. I'm glad you're enjoying it, dyeing is one of my favorite things to do. I love the teal/green and brown yarns together.
Ray, for using the short tips like on your sleeves, you may find it easier to use the 3-inch tip as your right needle and the 2-inch as your left. I have big ham hands and that made a huge difference to me. (I do the same when using the Chiaogoo Mini shorties to make 9-inch circs for socks, too.) Kevin, you have madd yarn dyeing skillz! I love all those shades, but that first grey was gasp-worthy!
Kevin your dyed yarn is incredible! You have a great eye for color. When I tried dyeing yarn I used kool aid and egg dye and it was all ridiculously bright colors that I would never use hahah
Just watching you comment on the 12 inch circulars. I found it helps to use two different length tips in the same size with the longer tip on the right hand needle. Made a huge difference for me !
Fab projects guys, Kevin your yarn dye skeins are beautiful. Not sure if it is true, but I hear a salad spinner is great for skein drain, and for small projects like socks, & hats. I have a Martin Storey book of classic men knits. My guys love the projects I have made. Lots of patterns on Ravelry by him as well. Best podcast, I always look forward to your episodes. Stay safe & well.
Hello Guys 😁 Great podcast again. Your both excellent knitter and eye candy 😍 Suggestion:. Rib Magazine for male knitting, I have a couple and this magazine has great patterns ! Great yarn dying Kevin ! Tip:. Red & Green makes Brown, also you can make green shades by adding black to yellow, for deeper greens than the usual yellow & blue ! Thanks again for sharing your life and knitting with us 😘 Ahymsa
Kevin, the cowl is beautiful! Same for the gray yarn you dyed. For the socks, I thought you could also rip the upper part of the biggest one and make a bind-off that mimics your cast-on, but you didn't seem to wanna do it because of the difference in the ribbing (?) Not sure I heard that correctly. Anyway, you could also maybe go a bit lower a re-knit it to the top to make the same thing than the other sock. Anyway, I'm sure you'll find a way! If this idea can help: I have a dehumidifier at home so I hang the wet skeins in front of where the dried air comes out and they dry pretty fast (a few hours).
Darn I lost all my comments I was typing 😳. I love the hand dyed yarn you did Kevin. I can’t wait to see what y’all knit up🧶👍🏻 the pink yarns are gorgeous too!! I really liked the hat and now the cowl Ray’s making for his mom! Anything with Orange I love 😍 So happy when y’all post. Always so much fun to watch y’all while I knit or crochet 🧶
WOW the yarn you dyed in the blue/grey is just so beautiful Kevin. The skeins are so evenly dyed. I absolutely ❤❤❤ it. Your other dyed skeins are great too but the blue is outstanding. Great podcast again guys....sorry to hear about your fall Kevin and hope you don't have any after effects. I hope to try to look in next Sunday...if I can work out the time difference as I'm in Scotland. Much love to both of you. x Ps A pattern book for men in my library is Rowan Dalesmen by Martin Storey. Some great knits.
Hey Kevin, you don't need a spin dryer to dry your yarn if you washing machine has a spin cycle you can control the rpm on. I put my dyed yarn in a clothes bag or a pillow case if there is a lot of yarn and set the spin cycle on 700rpm for my shop and a few of my dyer friends xo the same. I do make sure I have the nylon zip ties on to reduce tangles and you do need to snap the yarn a bit when it comes out to straighten it out - Rebecca from Chemknits snapa the yarn in a few videos.
So much chit chat, I love it! Leo and Roxy ia awesome yarn, born at my LYS, the Little Red Mitten. They have a new base coming at the end of February called Basics. So excited for them, and for me! 😄 Snowblowers are the best. But don't be surprised if after you buy one it doesn't snow enough to use it for like a couple of years - happened to us. Buy the best you can afford. We've had ours for 20 years, this year it wouldn't start, $800 later... But its now like brand new, good for another 20 years!
You’re absolutely right Marg!! Quality products for sure! Growing up we always had those things that could last forever...now, I feel like most things are disposable 😞
Kev...whoa! Great dye work! The blue is gorgeous! Can’t wait to see how it knits up.both of you r inspirational with the Montrealer. New series to watch on Show Time is Your Honor.
I love the idea of a scrappy Volcano cowl. Maybe use 1 neural color like a gray or tan for the whole thing then swap out the scraps as you go? That stripe could be just whatever neutral you used or like you said just a random pop of color.
To remove excess moisture out of your soaked item, have you tried the walk-on-it method? Squeeze out as much water as you can by hand, neatly layout your item on a couple of bath towels, with no wrinkles. Fold the towels over the piece and keep folding to the inside until you have a relatively small package. Then walk on it, tiny steps back and forth. Remove towels and find a faintly damp item that will dry quickly. It's Magic 🪄. Block accordingly. (Oh by the way, I recommend holding on to something so you don't fall 😅)
I have a few vintage and current books and magazines with exclusive knits for men. Rowans New Nordic Knits by Arne and Carlos, Vogue knitting for men with Kaffe Fassett, Vogue International knits for men Jaeger handknits for men, Sirdair & Phildaire, Martin Storey men knits for Rowan, Old editions of Rib Magazines. Kevin you have an amazing eye for colour. Keep up the dye works...Ray loved your shy smiles during the opening/intro
Arne and Carlos...they have a few patterns/books for men. They have a couple collections with Rowan-New Nordic Men's Collection by Arne an Carlos and the New Nordic Unisex Collection by Arne and Carlos. They have sweaters, hats, cowls, mittens, and socks. They also have some good ones in their Arne and Carlos' Favorite Designs and Norwegian Knits With a Twist. They have single patterns on their website also that are mens and unisex. Kevin, your dyed skeins are gorgeous. We are glad your fall was relatively owie free! Ray, I always pronounce it as 'solar rays" because you have such a sunny personality! Thank you, guys, for pointing us in the direction of some great dyers! Now, if I could just do a little more intentional buying instead of dragon hoard buying...:)
Kevin, if you're feeling brave, instead of tinking back 12-ish rows, you can pull out the needle (ahhh!!), pull the yarn slowly until you've back out maybe 10 rows, go back in with the needle, then tink back only a couple of rows. The yarn you're using looks like it won't unravel. Ray - the pockets!! Well done. Fabulous knitting with you two.
Hello Kevin and Ray! Kevin - I love the new dyed yarn. Fantastic! ❤️ Oh no! Spin drier was what Kevin was suggesting he was going shopping for after the Podcast... LOL! Ray, when you getting in the kitchen to cook up your colours? I do know some unisex books - Tin Can Knits “Strange Brew”.
Oh my goodness Kevin , I laughed so hard at your sock....I felt bad for laughing so hard and then laughed some more. Ray, I'm going to try and make '9" circulars' into a ring tone. Love you both. Thank you for sharing.....
Me too. Bad. But couldn't stop. Then thought "what's the big deal? Pickup and continue." Then realized I knit toe up -- very different problem. And.... be sure stripes go in correct order. Oops.
Never disappointed with your episodes!! Always entertained and inspired!! Kevin your dying is AHH-mazing 🧡🧶👍; Ray, "9-INCH CIRCULARS" makes me laugh every time!!😂🤣😂
I live in north central Arkansas where we seldom get much snow. The two storms that passed through left more than a foot of snow on our deck. Even though the daily temps have been in the upper 40s our driveway is still impassable. No snow shovel nor a snowblower! Ha ha!
@@NeedlesattheReadyPodcast I haven’t been out much since I had my right knee replaced on the 6th of January. Just to physical therapy but not even that for almost two weeks. I have done a great deal of knitting!
Leo and Roxie are dying floss for stitchers now. Caroline from Off the Grid is their distributor. Love Sundays. It’s like visiting and stitching with old friends.
Always great to see your wonderful projects. And your dyed yarns are to die for! Fantastic colors! I'm so happy to see what you are creating! Really Oooh Ahhh Gorgeous! ...... A question. Ray. When you say your leg on your socks is 7", where does the measurement begin and end on the sock? Are you beginning at and counting the rib? Do you end at the beginning or half of the fish lips kiss heel? Or are you using some other way of doing the leg measurements? Books. "Guys Knit" by Nathan Taylor. "Modern Lopi" by Lars Rains has some men's patterns in it too. Best wishes for more February!
Kevin, your hand dyed yarn is gorgeous! I've been contemplating trying my hand at natural dyeing and with koolaid. I was going to suggest a salad spinner for drying yarn, a lot less money lol. I loved watching Profiler, and I found reruns on Utube. Looking forward to live next Sunday. Have a great week! 🙃
Greetings from Townsville. Loved the chat, so fun and informative and loved the colours in Kevin’s yarn dyes, very clever. You both knit lovely items ivery impressed
