In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we continue our series where we are checking out the Catamarans at the Annapolis Sailboat Show to see what we think would suit us as a full-time live-aboard catamaran as we circumnavigate the globe.
This episode we cover the only Trimaran we reviewed. The Neel 51' Trimaran seems to be a popular boat because we had a lot of viewers asking us if we would review it on the channel. We have never seriously considered a Trimaran because we assumed that you would just get 3 very narrow hulls and each hull would be too narrow to have useable cabin space. Although the outer hulls are more narrow than the similar sized Catamarans, they were not so narrow as to unusable as living space and we actually really liked the Neel 51. They are coming out with a Neel 47', which might be more to our size and budget. We look forward to seeing that at next years Annapolis Sailboat Show. As for the Neel 51, watch and see what you think.
Hopefully, you enjoyed this episode. If so, give it a thumbs up, share the link with friends that might enjoy this content and subscribe so you don't miss any future episodes.
If you enjoy the channel and would like to show your support so that we can replace equipment to keep making the best content possible, please check out our Patreon Page to find out more at: www.Patreaon.com/CruisingOffDuty. @@Bowmans-Woods All I can say is the guys from Neel are schmucks! Missed opportunity. On youtube you guys are synonymous with Cat tours. (and princess seas, double sinks as well as rounded corners) I for one appreciate your videos to keep up with the latest industry offerings. Not to mention that you are introducing these boats to a next generation of buyers. When it comes to these companies, one stands out in my mind and that is Xquisite with the X5. I love that the owner gave you a tour personally and really dedicated quite a bit of time to give every last detail. Keep up the great work with the videos!!

Thanks Herman. Really nice to hear feedback like that. And yes, I'm wearing my Cruising Off duty T-shirt and filming everything with my big gimballed camera and Janice is filming with her gimballed camera and talking about features she sees. If the Salesperson ignores us then we read that they are not interested in being on camera. So we show what we see. Other builders saw us filming and offered to show us things. That is how they get the longer guided tour videos. We had a lot of boats to film in 2 days so we couldn't stand around waiting for an appointment with a Salesperson who didn't mind getting filmed. Next year we will probably only film boats we haven't filmed before. With fewer boats, we will probably have more time for each boat and will ask for tours.

I hear that we missed that. There was no indication where we could have gotten to that engine room. I guess the door is in the floor of the main salon. No salesperson that saw us filming even said hi to us so no one pointed out that option. I guess we will look for that next year when we look at the 47.

This is by far my favorite boat of the multihulls you have reviewed so far. Would not be surprised if this new cruising trimaran concept is adopted by some of the other top catamaran companies. Love the engine room and how it helps center the heaviest weight. Make sure you film it next year when you review the new 47. Can't wait to see it!

For sure. We will be more pushy to get a full tour on camera next year. There was a lot of interested viewers on this boat. We filed it at the end and were tired and did it with no assistance and it showed. Better next year and 47 will be more our size.

@Bowmans-Woods 5 лет назад
Yep. No one in the sales team pointed out the entrance door in the floor so we didn't know it was there. Maybe if we look at it again in the future we will film it. Probably not a boat we would consider because, as you can see from the thumbnail photo, it still heels over when it sails so it has the same downside a Mono has. You have to stow everything each time you put up the sails.

Thanks for the walk-through. Everyone shows aspects that are of particular interest to them and it’s good to get a wide variety of impressions. I imagine that it would be great sleeping in the almost silent windward ama as it lifts clear of the water (even in light winds). Thanks Jet. You would be surprised. We were asked by the Bali built boats what we were doing with our cameras and we told them about our channel and that we would put the footage on our RU-vid channel and they told us they were not willing to let us film their boats. I don't think there is much better than this for family cruising... great combination of speed, room/confort, usability (the engine bay is simply in a different league compared to cats and the day you have some issue it will be a huge difference) and safety. The 47 maybe even better when it becomes available.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 5 лет назад
So I hear. Too bad no one saw us filming and pointed out the engine room to us. We would have filmed it. Next time we see it at the show we will know to look for that feature. I hear it is quite something. My only concern (if you look at the thumbnail) is it appears to need to heel over to sail. That means everything has to be stowed so that things don't slide around and break. One reason we want to move to a Cat from a Mono is we hate having to stow everything we own each time we are planning to raise the sails. So, that probably will steer us away from this Tri.

I have to agree with everyone else. You totally missed the engine room... Tell me where else you can stand up and work on your engine? It seems as if you missed one of the points on these boats that there are 4 staterooms with heads including a Master. You don't find that on any cat this size. I realize you two are looking for yourself and maybe you can use this as future information to see the boat again. We went onboard with both of us carrying cameras on gimbals and my camera rig is quite large so I was hard to miss. No one from the boat showed us any interest or tried to answer any questions or even said hi to us. It's not our style to get on a boat demand someone show us around or give us a guided tour. Other boats the people on board saw us with the big gimballed cameras and asked if we wanted to know anything about the boat and then we asked if they would like to give us a tour. That's how we get them. Salespeople have to show interest or we figure they don't care enough for a tour. We are not going to demand anything. Sorry if we missed the engine room in our walkabout.

I was told it was on the 530 and I was shown a photo and it looks way more modern than the present hull. I really can't wait for that. Im just worried that the price will go up when they start producing with this new hull. The 530 has the best bang for the buck. The owner of the company told me he they sell the 530 as if it was at fire sale prices. Which implies they know they are underpriced. The new hull may make them re-price because their older style hull may be the reason some potential buyers pass. The new hull will get lots more interest.

I assume that is there room for that if you wanted it. It seems not everyone wants a clothes washer, so often it is plumbed for it but the washer may not be included as a standard option. But if there is a dishwasher (even less common) I am sure they have designed a spot for it.

The Neel was a little too cramped in the hallways for me. I think I talked with you about this one at the boat show. The hallways were so thin in some places I was able to get caught. Especially a forward birth down the lower stairs, I actually got stuck and banged my head. Eh...I wasn't overly impressed with this boat. Also the people showing the boat had absolutely no desire to engage those going on board whatsoever.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 5 лет назад
Yes. We mention that in the review. The hallways into the outer cabins were very narrow. Not really unexpected on a Tri. The narrow outer hulls is the reason we have never really seriously considered getting a Tri.

What's the difference other than the extra hull between a cat and tri
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 года назад
Well, the hull in the middle tends to be lower and the side hulls are there more for support so it does (as you see from the photo) heel over a bit. Since the weight is supported by 3 hulls instead of 2 it has a shorter draft and because of that some say a Tri can sail faster. But I would need to test sail a NEEL to say for sure if that is the case.

Late to this video by a couple years but I've noticed on some of your videos (which I really do like seeing and watching your videos) but your shots are not wide, it's like a zoom right in on things and is bit tough to gauge things or perspective. There's also rarely a panoramic shot of an area; lots of glances and peak at things but they're short and close up. It sometimes feels if you don't like it, it's not going to get a full shot and moved on quickly. Like we know Janice loves dolphin seats and this one didn't have them and so we missed seeing the entire front deck, trampolines, anchor and storage. Or the seat in the cockpit and gauges with no look around of the view or true feeling of what it would be like sitting there. Just a food for thought process as perspective watching a lot of your videos, great information and I appreciate all the time you put into going on boats, viewing them, filming them and then the editing. I'll keep watching for sure but just throwing out little things that may help improve the channel, thanks again for the video still.

It appears to me that trimarans lose one of the most prominent features of a catamaran; that being level passages. All of the under-sail photos and videos I've seen of trimarans show them with a more than 10 degree list. For that reason alone I'd go with a cat.
@Bowmans-Woods

We agree completely. It may be faster than a mono but it sails on a lean like a mono. We prefer a cat and its level sailing characteristics.
@Arrogan28

The point of this design is performance and handling in bigger weather. So maybe a skinner passage is not at all a big tradeoff, again considering just how much faster this boat is than a same sized/weight cat, and also how much better she will cut the waves in larger seas especially.... I am not sure it is fair to just this boat on just how much of house boat it is, compared to a cat, again it seems those things are worth digging into a big more in a review... but again, if you are more a fair weather sailer, than of course yea, likely a cat is going t have the tradeoffs that are important for you...

This was a quick boat show walk-through, not a detailed test sail. You need to have reasonable expectations of what you can get at a boat show with many boats being filmed. It was one of the boats we had never studied before we walked on. Not our best episode in terms of detail. Probably not a boat we would consider as it still heels when sailing as opposed to a Cat.

Hm, so many sharp edges, the lack of basic hand-holds through-out, less info on what is running the ship that its interior, which frankly, does not appeal to me. I'm interested in what this boat can handle in a storm on an ocean crossing, where does everything go for example, cushions. What can the rigging take? What's the standing rigging made of? Can you get up the mast in a good blow? All sorts of questions about craft like this, but luxury withstanding, I am not a fan of not having a wheel helm, or the inability to set one up, and because this is a boat show, I'm sure any manufacturer worth their salt would be happy to make this how-you-like anyhow. What I do like is the amount of available space, and the sheer potential, like if a zombie thing happened, or we broke the weather and had to move, but the way is now seems fairly 'fair weather'.

Hi, interesting to hear. Which hull was it? Was it the one boat that we heard of that had some water come in? I believe it was one with a very heavy dinghy and also some water toys like jetski at the back. It seems there was some issue the shipyard fixed but clearly aggravated by the use which was done of the back of the boat... It's a bit of a pity to add big weights on a boat built to be light and fast. I've met 3 other owners and all 3 were happy (and I am not talking about clients): a French (hull 4) family, a Swiss family and another French family (the one hull which won a transatlantic ARC race, carbon rigging). I have not heard of any other leakage problem. mc
