I did find myself buying more of their products lately, while their products are not the lightest, I find that their design are sensible.

I have this unit. As you mentioned , the green dot is basically useless. So being able to adjust the base without any way to accurately calibrate does not help much. Also, the handle will fall off if extended too far, which happened to me the very first time I used it. Nice tip on the additional plate as now I can use it with cage for my camera! Otherwise the orientation of the cmaera would be off by 90 degrees.
