Namco's NeGcon controller is a really cool Sony PlayStation oddity. While not exactly rare this device has entered obscurity by not being utilized by enough games on the platform. So join us on this episode of Rerez as we take a look at this unique and cool video game controller!

I tried this controller out at video game exhibit 5 years ago and was by far the most responsive racing controller I ever laid my hands on. Even better then a racing wheel.

Rerez was a generally small channel that I found when I seached "worst console ever." Those two videos are still beyond his best, but I delved into others, and the Rare Obscure Or Retro series is very interesting. Subscribed.

The name comes from the Japanese "nejiru" ("to twist"), so it would would be pronounced more like "nedgie-con" (rhyming with wedgie).

+Pax Humana he said it works with certain PS2 games. it won't work with PS3 or PS4 as there is no PS1/2 controller input on the console.

+Teague Prower You can get adapters to use PS1/PS2 controllers on PS3, so in theory it could work.

I got a NeGcon back in 1996, and I still have it. Such a cool little controller: analog triggers, analog face buttons, and of course that awesome analog twist to imitate a steering wheel. Way better than the Jogcon!

Ridge Racer Type 4 is my favorite racing game, so i'm definitely gonna get myself a NeGcon controller. Thanks Shane for introducing this into my life. :D

Once you have one of these in your hands, they're very intuitive to use. Analogue throttle brakes and steering made me a god in the mid 90's on Collin McRae. I'd buy a reboot for consoles and PC, as a control paradigm it's great alternative to a wheel and pedals for casual play in driving games. Takes up tons less space when you're not using it and once you get a feel for it it's better than just OK. At any rate, it eats keyboard and mouse for breakfast. I will continue to pronounce it neg con (like egg con) to trigger the japanophiles.

Hey, I'm driving my racing games since F1 '97 with the NegCon. Since 2007 I'm using it via USB adaptor on PC. My (just 3) project CARS videos are driven with a NegCon. It's absolute precise.

i actually play Dirt Rally for PC with this fabulous controller.I use a PS to USB converter for that.I wish there where a proper new USB version of the Negcon.

wow, is it easy to map and get working? I had a rough time trying to make it work on my raspberry pi and pretty much gave up on its use outside of Ps1/ps2.

I still have two of these down in my old PS1 box in the basement. It actually worked perfectly for almost all racing games, not just Namco games. I used it extensively, particularly for all the Ridge Racer, WipEout and Formula 1 games. It was GLORIOUS, once you got used to it. The level of precision was fantastic, and I still can't beat it on a modern Xbox or PS4 controller. My all-time favorite gaming moment (on any platform) is playing WipEout 2097 with the neGcon, particularly a Piranha racer on Spilskinanke, Phantom class with Firestarter (instrumental) blasting at full volume. It was so intense and fiendishly difficult, but the pleasure of winning (after a LOT of practice) was unbelievable! Oh and by the way, I also have a Jogcon down in that box. That's more of a novelty controller to me than this - I never got used to that at all.

+The Rocket Bunny I really feel like our quality has been higher even though we've been releasing two videos a week. Most of our older videos were about as short as this one. The last five weeks we have been releasing much longer videos, this one just happened to be shorter.

This is the only PS1 controller I've ever used. There was a video games exhibit at the Ontario Science Center a couple years back and they had Ridge Racer with a NeGcon.

Mad Catz released a official PlayStation branded racing wheel back based on the neGcon when first games in the series Wipeout and Ridge Racer were released. There were also other third party controller that looked like RC transmitter that were based on this controller.

Every single _WipE'out"_ fan wants a NeGCon. I actually own one, but I don't have a Playstation to use it with. If I _had_ a PS1 or PS2, then I would be playing _Wip3out_ and/or _WipEout Fusion_ all of the time with it.

using a NeGCon is fantastic for the wipeout games. Its probably the only way to get analogue steering on wipeout 1 for ps1, at least. Just be prepared for hand cramps regardless of which game. It can be awkward applying pressure on the analogue face buttons, whilst still keeping the controller stable when twisting. Also works on some PS2 games like Wipeout Fusion and Ridge Racer 5.

I have this still. It was bundled with Ridge racer if I remember correctly. The was also another steering type one that had a center disc that turned that was bundled with a ridge racer game.

I now want a PC USB version of this controller. I know it may seem gimmicky but I could see that being WONDERFUL for racing games. For example, It almost looks like this was MADE for Nitronic Rush.

i got to play with one of those a few times, back in the day, and loved it. still think it was a genius idea. the long travel of the twist controlls felt almost infinitely more precise than a twitchy thumbstick, and was faster than a steering wheel controller.

Just a heads up - You can use this on PC using something like a Super Joy Box 3 Pro, as the drivers will recognize the NeGcon immediately and map all the analog inputs properly as different axes. Its really a blast to muck around on PC games with this controller. Sauce: I have a Super Joy Box 3 Pro and use my NeGcon on my PC regularly. Edit Notes: Its a Super Joy Box 3 Pro, not a SJB 5.

I was lucky enough to be able to borrow one of these things back when Blockbuster was still open and this game was brand new. It came with their copy of Ridge Racer Type 4 and I was such a frequent customer they let me borrow it. Very interesting concept that never really took off, it was more for the Japanese market than here in the states, and it worked pretty well.

Wipeout & Wipeout XL/2097 is amazing with this gamepad. I have the neGcon clone pad, the Interact UltraRacer..it takes some time to get used to (much like the neGcon) but its pretty fun. Interact also made the (i assume) JogCon clone, MegaRacer, which I cant say ive used myself.

WebVMan The UltraRacer for N64 is completely different. Just binds the thumbstick to the wheel..that's it unlike the PSX version & it being a NeGcon clone.

Some company out there really ought to make a USB or Bluetooth controller like this. Analog thumbsticks just don't have the resolution for driving, and wheel & pedal setups just aren't small and easily portable.

I had a coltroller for playstation and PC (It had both, the PS plug and USB) that had additional analog triggers below the shoulder buttons which could be mapped to any axis on-the-fly. Combined with Midnight Club 2, which utilizes the right stick for torque that worked just fine.

For some bizarre reason, Namco Museum also supports the NeGcon. I know because the button tooltips always provide both versions of the prompt.

That seems pretty intuitive, like you know what hand to turn to precisely move to the direction you want, however I'm not sure about the long buttons, some games require a rapid succession or a focus in pressing or holding.

It also works with Gran Turismo, Crash Team Racing, and Rave Racer. There are some driving games that are not compatible such as Driver.

Love the NeGcon, it also works on Namcos Ace Combat games too (some of them at least). Have you tried the Gamester Evolution? I picked on up last year, its weird, its a powerglove for PS1 and it almost works

This controller works with a lot of racing games though, not only Namco ones. GT, Wipeout, Motor Toon GP (I think?), and a whole slew of others. Also Ace Combat :D

The NeGcon was NOT just used for a couple of games. Practically every driving game for PS1 supported it, and the NeGcon drivers were the basis for steering wheels for PS1 as well. The NeGcon is the best driving controller ever made, once you get over the fairly small learning curve. Also, it’s pronounced Neh Gee Con, the name is a Japanese contraction of Next Generation Controller.

Rotational analogue input is always going to be better than a typical joystick for these things. Think of a paddle controller for Pong, or even a dial for your volume control compared to a sliding mechanism. It's just easier to fine-tune, you're less likely to overshoot too.

Don't forget: the popularity and adoption of the neGcon inspired madcatz to mirror its functionality in their steering wheel for the ps. It worked great with wipeoutxl and, of course , the ridge racer series.

The PS1 Ultraracer controller also had the long buttons, you should find one it was a really good for racing games

what you mean by the 1 and 2 buttons on the NeGcon is that they are pressure sensitive, meaning the further you push them, the bigger the difference in speed.
