Yes, and on my speakers there is a low vibrational noise.. the pitch is high, so it even sounded a bit scary like in a movie.. probably no one else will hear it but me.
1995 Through a friend they took the world cup out of the safe for us and we held it. Were given seats on the halfway line for the interprovincial game. Was a school rugby tour when my son was 13. Fantastic memories. The state of it makes me sad. Our history is being obliterated bit by bit.
Such a shame had so many memories at that ground since going to my first WP game back in 1991. Watching the greats like Tiaan Straaus, Danie Gerber, Chester Williams, Joel Stransky, Percy Montgomery, Corne Krige, Breyton Paulse, Bob Skinstad, Pieter Rossouw and many more from WP and opponents like Uli Schmidt, Naas Botha. Ruben Kruger, Francois Pienaar, James Small (also WP) James Dalton, Mark Andrews, Henry Honniball so many. Including Super Rugby and Internationals against All blacks, Australia (1995), Wales, Argentina and The Lions 1997
Some of my favorite shows in America are about restoring the old towns, and homes to their full glory and then giving it maybe modern updates, wonder what kept that from happening here. :/
I was fortunate enough to know someone who used to consistent score me tickets in the railway and grand stands at Newlands. Get there early, park across the road at Groote Schuur, have a lekker braai and take in a game. Spent many games cheering and swearing at Western Province, the Stormers and the Boks here. For me, the best atmosphere anywhere. It broke my heart when they moved to Cape Town stadium. I've never been there and never will go there.
You can blame WPRFU for this one. They wanted it declared a heritage site but heritage doesn't pay bills. Investors build stadiums to make money, no other reason
I don't know why people make such a big thing about moving forward. Newlands has served SA well but it's time to move on. The stadiums built for the 2010 World Cup are excellent. I have been to Loftus, Ellis Park, Newlands, Kings Park, and Boet Erasmus. While there may be history behind them, it is history. Or do you hand onto your 50 year old cars too? The new stadiums far exceed the old ones. Cape Town Stadium and NMB Stadium tie in my opinion for stadium/setting combination though Cape Town Stadium does also have good nightlife venues surrounding it. Move on people. Newlands was built before the times of corporates, traffic jams and electric fences and barbed wire on walls. It should be flattened and replaced by schools that the southern suburbs of Cape Town so desperately need to stop the people in the area clambering over each other just to get their kids into a school.
