Neglected Army Truck. Will it run and drive?

Had an acquaintance with a large fleet of military vehicles and trailers tragically pass away. I had discussed purchasing a M817 military dump truck from his collection before he passed. When we got there we found the dump truck engine was completely locked up. So I picked out another truck to try...
1970 XM818 6x6 tractor truck, with a Cummins 250 non turbo, 5 speed transmission, and a two speed transfer case.

Drove one of those in 1970 when they were first fielded. The Cummins NHL-250 and overdrive transmission were a welcome upgrade from the "multifuel" M39 series. When you first started it up, it appeared to have air in the system You can bleed the air out using the Primer Pump on the dash to the left of the steering wheel. Get a copy of TM9-2320-260-10. It explains the procedure.

From the UK. What a shame, it was a deserving unit which could have so easily been saved (by yourself) You in the U.S have so many old vehicles to discover. You enthusiasts are very lucky. Thanks for your video. If you come across an IHC M-2-4 please ping me here.

Am I alone here now or does it seem these U-Tubers for the most don't come prepared? I mean if I'm going to drive a few hundred not to mention 50 miles to rescue some trucks, I would come with 3 times more batteries than this guy has, battery charger, generator, extra fuel, tools, air compressor, spare tires etc. SMH!

You guys did pretty good! If you do another one of these either the 800 series like this or the 939 series 5 ton also with the 250 Cummins you can very easily bleed the fuel system by cracking the injector lines and there is a hand pump near the IP and you can presurize the entire injection system from there to purge any air out of it and it will start faster. This was pretty good though! Nice work.

It’s horrific they scrapped those trucks. I know a guy in that general area that would have bought every one of them for more than scrap value and if they weren’t salvageable, keep all the parts for other truck owners. Very very sad.😢 Nice video otherwise. I thought it was gonna run away on you for a minute there.

@steamman5320
@steamman5320 Год назад
A good portion of the ones I have run across are 'round-to-its', something sidelined the machine, and the owner was going to get around to fixing it. And never did. Many more were collected, and just never worked on. And more were left after the owner died. I agree, some of them were simply parked because parts are no longer available or it is worn out beyond economical repair. Some stuff passes into the Golden age, where it was a common item, then parked, more and more were disposed of, and now this one is only one of a handful left and now worth the effort to save. The real reason for all the videos on the subject is that they are popular, and get lots of views.

So you are talking a MACK 123 tractor or a 125 cargo/artillery tractor. I had one, the trucks came with a 844 ci Le Roi petrol engine and then they upgraded them to a MACK 300 V-8 diesel and that helped their fuel mileage a bunch it got the truck up to .75 mpg instead of .50 mpg! Big trucks to say the least!
@lewiemcneely9143

@karlk6860 Год назад
@@lewiemcneely9143 they never ran a 903 in them they ran what was called a 300 although it was a V8 like the 903 it was smaller. I replaced a 300 that was in a 123 and had to hunt for one for about a month and finally found one that was freshly overhauled on the east coast and replaced the original 300 with that one. The big Macks are tough to get parts for because you have to deal with fiat in Italy who owns Mack.
@lewiemcneely9143
@lewiemcneely9143 Год назад
@@karlk6860 I was around them in 1971 to almost 73 and they were 903's. The R/T carnes had them in their carriers and some amphibs had one or 2. @karlk6860
@karlk6860 Год назад
@@lewiemcneely9143 sorry I have a feeling we are talking about different vehicles. I am talking about the Mack 123 military tractor used to pull a trailer to haul tanks. I believe the 123 replaced the Dragon Wagon. The 123 was discontinued from the US military in like 1960. I guess when the tanks being hauled were faster than the truck pulling them was. You are certainly correct on the 903 being used in both wheeled and tracked vehicles though mainly the Bradley for tracked rigs. Sorry about the misunderstanding no disrespect intended!
