Gross!!!! This filter hasn't been cleaned in over 13 years, we had to use an excavator to clean it!!!
In this video we clean a wetland filter by removing the old gravel with an excavator and replacing it with washed roadbase. This liner pond has an intake bay and a wetland filter built with Aquascape Aquablocks, Centipede and Snorkel units.
This was so severely impacted that the only answer was to remove all the top gravel with an excavator and replace it with clean gravel.
Be sure to like, comment, subscribe, and share this video!
Thanks!
Carl Petite

Great information, Carl. This is not a project for just anyone. You obviously know the forensics of this wetland filter and know what you are doing as a certified Aquascape contractor. Bravo!

Thanks for the kind words, Lauri :) We were both excited and sad when we found that it was an Aquascape Wetland Filter buried under years of neglect. Excited because we knew what to do and who to ask for help (Thanks Kathy Smith and the other CAC’s that were on the live facebook feed in the CAC forum concurring and disputing how we should approach this job). Sad because they are so simple to maintain and it was neglected because of a transfer of home ownership without a proper handoff. We could not have made the proper repairs on this if we weren’t trained by Aquascape.

Thanks, I am installing a Wetland filter in the future to my 3,000 gal pond. So cool to have the best water quality for my fish using the best method to purify my water.

That is such a great video...informative and shows exactly what is needed for the pond and wetland filter. Also, knowing that the trees will be nourished by this water/pond is (I believe) what a lot of property owners are looking for, especially in Southern CA. Thank you so much

Great video so show folks that they need to do maintenance on their filters. Wetlands filters will never, never keep the water crystal clear all the time reason maintenance is important. Traditional filtration is water enters filter from the top and pumped out the bottom allowing Autotrophic bacteria to work on the Ammonia and CO2 additionally the Heterotrophic bacteria on the top of the filter to work on large organic matter like fish poop and human skin cells. Traditionally finer material will be at the bottom of the filter like finer sand, filter matts and activated charcoal and larger gravel on top and about 1 or 2 inches of 1 inch rocks. If filtration starts from the bottom up then the entire set up of the fine sand should be at the top followed by filter matts, activated charcoal and the 1 inch rocks on the bottom, some type of screen mesh or additional filter matts need to be used to hold the activated charcoal. This type of filter will contain the larger matter at the bottom and if not maintain properly a huge accumulation of heavy material will just settle at the bottom and the Ammonia and CO2 will not filter out properly on the top by Autotrophic bacteria.

DANG! That had to be a hella spendy bill! But, not going forward at least, and I guess, if you’re the new homeowner, still less money than installing that whole project.🤷🏼‍♂️

Good question. In the case of this customer, their intake was fine.

Hello Carl , congrats on your wonderful videos. I have a question that never gets discussed. How do we calculate the correct amount of water that should travel through a bog filter per hour? I am planning to build my pond with a surface area of about 600 sqft and depth of around 6 feet. I want to have a very large bog of about the same size of the pond approx 500sqft. I will have about 5-10 koi fish. Also the bottom of the pond will have gravel and water will pumped through the gravel up flow. I would like to know how how much water per hour I should pump through the pond and how much through the up flow system on bottom of the pond. I never found anybody that discussed this topic....glad to hear your input.

So with the snorkel and centipede unit all you do is pump the sludge out the bottom and thats it? No other maintenance to the bog?(other then plant maintenance)

I would have just filled it up and tried to back flush it with clean water, pumping out the dirty water underneath the aqua blocks the way your supposed to clean a wetland filter. Rather than ripping the whole thing up.
