The neighborhood's and the communities are pittsburgh its what makes Pittsburgh ......Pittsburgh please everyone sign the petition for the people who live in those neighborhoods
It’s a Star Fort the original includes the old prison and courthouse. Pittsburgh has a silly amount of old world buildings preserved and still functioning. Humans did not build them, those were superior beings. LOVE PGH!
okay I know I'm late but as a local and a history buff this comment irks me. Fort Pitt was actually a British fort, and wasn't the first fort to be built in Pittsburgh. Way, WAY back in 1754 the French originally built Fort Duquesne, to try and lock in trade in the Ohio Valley and get control of the Mississippi river to make sure the trade in Louisiana (big cross continent one, the one we bought on the cheap, not the bayou) could be connected to trade in Canada. Fort Duquense is small, and nothing the size of Fort Pitt, but is the reason we have things like Duquesne University. Around the time the Ohio River Valley (the modern day Rust Belt) was a big heckin deal to Britain and France, and they were both rushing to take control of the three rivers just because of how valuable the position is. France got there first, but Britain wasn't far off. South east of Pittsburgh in a place called Jumonville Glen there was a young British land surveyor with a small armed group with him and some Native Americans too. They rolled up on these French camped out, and the Native American (Mingo indians) Tanacharison got hella pissed at the French being there in the first place and they ambushed the French. The British with them, while not necessarily innocent to violence or French hatred, basically said "oi righto, fuck the bloody french" and joined in the fighting. Turns out the guy there, Joeseph Longname Jumonville was pretty important, and when word got back to Fort Duquesne, the French were PISSED. So the British have an "oh shit" moment and buhl on out of there, and end up building a fort out of necessity, called Fort Necessity. The young surveyor with military hopes was getting ready for his first taste of warfare, you may have heard of him- his name is George Washington, not a big deal. The British got decimated, but the empires then got big mad at each other: causing the start of the Seven Years War, or the French and Indian War depending on where you live. That war completely reshaped the continent, and was arguably the first "world" war. Best of all, it all started some half an hour drive from dahntahn Pittsburgh on route 40 (which was actually established by Washington's crew.) Eventually the British won, and built Fort Pitt as a big fuck you to the French. If you've read this long thanks for reading my essay. If I'm wrong please let me know, this is kind of ranty and totally an overexpansion on a joke that was completely fine. Pittsburgh finds itself quietly hidden in the middle of a BUNCH of world events, like the cure for Polio, the building of the first iron clad ships, and well, a whole bunch of American wars and controversies like the Whiskey Rebellion.
Dude. I am from butler originally, Went to school at the Art Institute and worked at Three Rivers Stadium. I moved to Florida in 2000 after school finished and love the weather. Down here I got to see RU-vidrs like Adam the Woo, World of Micah and Casey Neistat and wondered if I could do it(I am, just starting actually), but I digress. I always wondered why someone didn't make video of quality(and I mean QUALITY, not someone doing video selfies and giggling the whole time) of the great areas of Pittsburgh. The best people could see, that I knew, was from Rick Sebak on WQED. Then, I found your channel today. I am humbled by your videos Man, these are WORKS OF ART. You bring the best of the city without compromising the downside. All the aspects of the area are expertly filmed and scored. Well Done Sir, Well done! I will be a Patreon subscriber in the coming weeks for sure!
Tell “The Resident of the Run” to run for a local government office. She has a strong voice, one that can positively influence change. She is brilliant! Thank you for your videos, they are the most entertaining pieces I’ve watched ever!
Love how centrally located yet secluded The Run is; The best Pittsburgh neighborhood no one knows about. Big Jim's is good but I prefer a Fiori's calzone any day of the week!
Lived on Four mille run. Wasn't the most desirable place when I grew up there in the 70s. The mills were in action and we were bathed in sulfur suet. A few small stores. Landslide closed us off from Oakland. Kept traffic out but progress down.Tight and insulated. An easy walk up the tracks or hop a train to the enjoy the culture of Oakland and the nature of Schenley park. The park was our back yard. Flooded almost every spring. Fond memories. Was that Paris talking at the beginning of the video?
We would like to suggest a video on "WOODS RUN" among the next 10, do it quickly so you can include the Old Western Penitentiary before they tear it down.
Dean, if you plan on doing Hazelwood. Contact me. My family owns the Lytle Cafe, its the oldest/last bar in the neighborhood, we've owned it for 47 years.
@@daemarregan1461 Thats crazy to me! I learned how to drive a car down there as a young kid in 92. I was ten mins away walking distance but still, a lot of people dont know of The Run it seems.
Gonna be honest, this video makes me cry and smile at the same time. I want to take a short trip to the run next year. This makes me smile that our city is so diverse and creative, but it pisses me off that they want to destroy a small community like this. I would like to see the city improve the necessities and skip the wants... Thank you Dean for sharing this video, and the rest of your videos! Even though i live in Gibsonia, I want to move to the city with these folks and live a life like this!
I don't know a single thing about Pittsburgh, and can't say why exactly captured my interest here, but you have truly incredible skills as a documentarian-the editing, the camera work and directing, the music, the content of the interviews, and the love you clearly have for both the art of filmmaking and the people of your city, are just mind blowing and inspiring
My only hope is that some of these predominantly white neighborhoods being left behind grow to understand that the only color that matters is green and the only race that matters is to the top. Being left out of federal, state, and/or city planning is extremely detrimental to any community. Socio economic class is the only determinator of “superiority” in this country. Realize that we’re in this fight to survive, together.
Keep the videos coming I love them thank you and I signed the petition because I 100% believe in keeping Pittsburgh a city of neighborhoods we don't need to be like other cities we are perfect just the way we are
You are a really talented filmmaker you have ability to take ordinary things and turn them into beautiful art along with the music and the meaningful content it’s a joy to watch . Where did you learn your craft?
Outstanding work. My wife and visited Pittsburg from Vancouver this past fall and we fell in love with the tiny fraction of your city we got to see. Your videos call me back to explore further and deeper.
Darryll Doucette Pittsburghers love Canadians but we also love our “ h” at the end of Pittsburgh! Lol ! There were times in our history when Pittsburgh was spelled without the “h” but, now that we have it, we want to keep it!
Im not from pittsburgh nor PA but i live in a flood prone area, so i can feel for these residents. It also looks like a magical spot that shouldnt be disturbed
If you'd like to help the residents of The Run save their neighborhood, please read and sign the petition at this link: actionnetwork.org/petitions/our-money-our-solutions
I was born and raised in the Run along with my mom and dad. I could not think of a better way to capture the Run. Thank you for such a thoughtful and caring approach to this neighborhood. I also couldn't agree more with the neighbors highlighted in the video. Just as a note. My Mom's side of the family founded and went to the big church, St John's in your video. My Dad and his family founded and attended St Joachim's Roman Catholic Church down under the overpass. That church is now closed along wit the grade school across Saline street. I mention this because they and the church community were Slovak immigrants. I wanted to give them a shout out since they tend to get forgotten in the "Carpatho Rusyn St John's - Andy Warhol" Run facts. Slovak immigrants were a large part of the Run as well. Thanks!
Love your videos sir! Also I was wondering what ended up happening with the petition to prevent the new roadway, did some googling and found some good news from 2023: here’s a quick excerpt: “On June 11, residents of Panther Hollow, Four Mile Run, and Hazelwood gathered with supporters in Panther Hollow to celebrate the demise of the Mon-Oakland Connector (MOC) shuttle road and uplift a new vision of community-centered development in its place.” 🎉🎉
Just subscribed to your channel and I live about an hour away and my daughter lives in the burgh now so I'm planning on moving here shortly and love this little part of Pittsburgh and never heard of " the run"! Love the way the"villagers" talk about this community.
What a beautiful political message you've uncovered! This documentary was so impactful to watch! Back in March, I was in an Airbnb in Greenfield and I remember walking down "The Run" and being completely fascinated with it. When I move to Pittsburgh in 2020, I'll be visiting The Run properly this time, I've got to pay a visit to the Byzantine Church too! Thanks for the amazing doc Dean!!
I freakin love your series!!! i anxiously await them weekly!! keep it up!! You should venture south a bit and check out good ol' Weirton or Steubenville!! Id love to take you around!! lets see we have shittons of Funeral homes, "Cafes"aka casinos with 6 or less machines, smog...i live in what is so graciously referred to as "Pew Town", banks and fast food restaurants! I mean come on what else do I need to persuade you ! lol You can do 3 states in one day!
Great video. My grandparents lived in the Run, on Acorn. I learned to drive on those streets, was baptized and made my first holy communion at St. John’s. I’m an atheist, but that church will always hold a special place in my heart. My dad tended bar at the Hunkie Club behind Big Jim’s. He taught me the numbers 2-10 by having me play the poker machine lol. When people talk about how Pittsburgh used to be I always think of the Run of my youth. J&L was still running over in Hazelwood, and there were still old Hinkies from back in the old world speaking in Eastern European accents, and old women in babushkas. I could go on and on about the Run.
They're going to "Lawrenceville" the whole city. Nothing but skinny jeans beardos making way too much at tech jobs and pushing the rest of us out to make way for their avocado toast and kombucha joints. It's gonna happen, and there's nothing we can do about it.
Blue Mountain Edward First I thought you had on a face mask because you worked in the medical field. Then I realized you don’t and was happy that no one’s health and life are in a person like your’s hands.
I've only been to Pittsburgh once and I felt kinda like I belonger there. It's natural beauty plus industrial decay plus mix of neighborhoods has a certain appeal to me.
Pittsburgh has always been on my radar since im from Ohio but after watching this neighborhood series years ago I now want to live there post-grad. I originally clicked on this video bc I thought your name was weird and wanted to see what this long-haired hippie fellow was up to. You had like no views on these vids at the time of me viewing and I was really surprised by your videoing, editing, and narration. After watching multiple neighborhood vids I subscribed and started day dreaming about living there. Now that Im in my last year of college I hope to find a job in Pittsburgh next year. Thx for the vids and content to day dream about, Mr. Bog.
I really enjoy when you find a restaurant or park that's special to a neighborhood, and eat there. It gives me a great excuse to experience the neighborhood!
Wow! So happy to find this! My mom grew up here over 85years ago (she's 91 now), my grandparents married in the church you showed and mom was a member when she came along. Most residents came from the "old country" in Czechoslovakia and when my aunt had a candystore there she was related to most of the familys. Mom told me about the flooding and how the manhole cover used to "blow" which means they haven't fixed the problem there in over 85years! How could a major city like Pittsburgh allow this to happen for so long and why would they now say they'll fix it but tie it to a multi-million dollar plan to destroy this historical area?

Great vid.! To live in an all pre-gentrification area - what a dream! I lived in a mixed (delapitation and brand new) area that still remains as such. Lots of quad unit houses built in the 20’s to 12 unit and under complexes from the 60’s. They have either been re-habed with a rent hike, sold and twin townhomes put in it’s place, or still has all the charm of the woodwork trimmings, built in corner cabinets, bookcases, and telephone shelves but is plagued with mold. The city would try and assist change by doing sweeps of the older ones and citing certain codes aren’t met resulting in fines and color coded stickers on the front door to not be removed. In some cases, it wasn’t enough for the residents to own the home when someone else owned the street and sent everyone packing. Thankfully, most of the restaurants and bars still remain to get that old house fix. Hope everything works out for this lovely slice of cozy!
Hi. Dean look a here I am missing Pittsburgh. Pa already my friend and I am not from there but I have lived out there on the south side of Mt Oliver In just for right now I am In Philadelphia just for right now because I miss the country
If you ever want to come and do an interview, I run Swirling Wind Vapors down in southside. I grew up in Pittsburgh my whole life and I'm planning on college around here. DM me if you are interested. Finding your videos has been helping me appreciate my city so deeply. Thank you for the inspiration.
Watershed in schenley park is one of the problems!!! Its not a solution. The way you remove water is to collect it and dump it in the nearest waterway. The run water should be dumping right into the Mon.
We used to frequent Big Jim’s after our bike excursions to the Eliza Furnace Trail when we were young. I’ve since moved away but that’s crazy to know Big Jim’s is still there.
Before I left Pittsburgh for college I worked at the J & L Steel mill for the summer, 2nd Ave and Bates St! Right by the Hot Metal Bridge. That was in 1965. Also worked at Carnegie Tech when it changed names to Carnegie Mellon. Still think of it by the old name@
Great video! As a Run resident, two things: Flooding has been happening in The Run for the past 100 years. The video made it sound limited to the past decade. Big missed opportunity to interview the old ladies of The Run. There's a a few (usually Slovak) ladies north of 80 who have lived here since the 1930s and never moved! Of course, they probably wouldn't have come out of the house during the filming of this but I guarantee they were watching you from their windows.
These videos have reignited my love of pittsburgh neighborhoods. Thank you for making them. I think you would really like Millvale- especially the Attic and Mr. smalls
Dean Bog even if you don’t include it in the video I would highly recommend visiting the Attic! The coolest record shop I have been to. Jerry’s in squirrel hill is also great.
I've gladly signed the petition and I wholeheartedly hope it's helps. It's true the people that live here are getting left behind I've seen it first hand here in the east liberty area and there's no end in sight. I really loved this video. And ps....yay for finishing that calzone😄🤗👏👏👏
@@DeanBog I am new(ish) to the area (only been around 5 or 6 years). What happened to East Lib? I hear people talking about it a lot, but I was never around before all the changes.
Hey how yinz doing? 😁 I just stumbled on to your channel watched a few videos.. Big props to what your doing I dig it... I have family in Sewickley an surrounding areas down there. My mother grew up there an went to Avonworth HS in the 60's/70's. But by the time I was born they had moved North up to Clarion County. I find that area very interesting an so much rich history to learn about. It was such a treat to find your RU-vid channel.
Thank you, Dean! You're a master at what you're doing! Love your use of score -- the music is great. I live in NH but am a frequent #pgh visitor and hopefully a future resident...no place like it!
This girl on youtub "Katina" she's 5'2", may 105ish lbs..she would CRUSH that calzone in 5min...or less. I grew up in Homestead so I know exactly where the "Run" is. Unfortunately I've never been there... Could not figure how to get "down" there °~°
It's at the bottom of Greenfield Avenue make a right hand turn and there's the Run. I ate their calzones all the time. My mom worked there when I was a kid.
This is amazing. The woman with the cat is my neighbor. I could see my car so I know I was right across the street during her interview. Would've loved to give you some knucks on this great series
Out of all of the things I miss about Pittsburgh, Big Jim's is at the very top of my list! I used to eat the whole Big Jim's zone and walk up the steps to my house at the top of Greenfield almost once a week!
So Glad you did ah video on this neighborhood...when I was ah kid...and say,we were going to Kennywood..we came from ALIQUIPPA...so just riding by.. looking out the window..I would always notice those golden domes...and those houses staggered along the hillside...thanks Dean, for this enlightment.
Omg, too funny at the end. If that were at my house you would be a meth head and I would have to scream at you to try and get you to go away. That us why I wanna move to Pittsburgh
big jim’s is so great i love the chicken parm hoagie. I would love to see Mt. Washington, Beechview, or Brookline in an episode since Beechview is where i reside.
