Neighbors Were MAD When They Heard About Our House Build . . . Word is Spreading . . .

It was a normal day doing work on the farm . . . until a neighbor stopped in to give me a piece of their mind about our proposed house build . . .
I guess from here on out, there IS no more "normal". We are pushing the limits and building a house and it's creating quite the uproar in our community . . .

We'd LOVE to build it fully from the ground up, but sadly our local township only allowed us TWO YEARS to fully complete our home, so it's a race against time to try to get everything done BOTH with professional help AND on our own!
Building half of it on our own allows us a MASSIVE savings with our budget and makes this unique home design actually affordable!
We started with a low cost floor plan, to make this an affordable barndominium and learned how to save money on a house build.

Looks like an overreach on the townships part. They're elected for their honesty and community good. Lets hope they keep this in mind and decide to let you guys build a home.

Yeah, it's just red tape, and having the neighbors support you helps. You having a nice house helps their property values also. Hope your Easter went great.

but here in Michigan we do have caps on homestead property. It does help reduce the amount they can raise it. If the property transfers, it gets appraised at 50% of fair market value. Then it's capped at the rate of inflation or 5%, whatever is less. A new house on your property allows them to raise your assessment to 50% the house value. Then removing the other home should lower it some. You need to verify it with the appraiser. You can protest your assessment. I've won a couple times. They can make mistakes.

Around 14 mins the neighbor really seemed supportive of you guys, which is awesome to have. This is why we are moving to a r e d state as we have had all of these same issues in other states when we have built a home. Funny the hypocrisy with people always comes into play. It's OK for someone to build a home on some land, but then when a neighbor wants to build on land that they pay for, well, now there might be some objections!! Best of luck with the new build project!!

Not liking click bait.... This is common practice to advise the neighbours of plans for Permanent Residence. Stay in your lane. Hope you had a Happy Easter. Did daughter visit? Consider a Prebuilt home that is moved onto a foundation in a day or 2. Problems have arisen in many areas because the old residence isn't torn down or moved and it is rented out instead. If it is a case of a Hired Hand needed to help on the Farm, it can be allowed.

No, she's trying to save money right now and going to college :) Out here even pre-built houses take a few months to finish up. It can be tough to get contractors within the time frame needed ;)

I agree with you, the township board is being way too picky about you building your new house. I think that some member of the township board had a neighbor that started building a new house then took several years to complete the build, then a few more years passed before to old house was demolished. So now they have their drawers in a pinch making them all cranky. I am praying for you to continue to be covered by the favor of God.

I guess it sounds like their concern is that we might rent one or the other out. But if that were the concern, why not give so many days to remove the old house AFTER the occupancy permit is given for the new house??

@@This1LifeWeLive That is a good idea also. Sort of like, "You have 90 days to demo the old structure." Or if they are concerned about keeping progress, have a 3 month or 6 month permit that has a conditional renewal upon proof of progress or demolition. There are much better ways to handle it than what they have been doing. From what your neighbor said about how they dealt with his father about a gas line. It sounds like greedy and power hungry people are in positions that they probably shouldn't be.

Don't worry happens in the uk as well with neighbours even new neighbours buying the view ,own local authority now making us build two field away which now means making a road of 1/2 mile destroying trees and grassland😩

The township's concern is more than likely the idea of having two permanent single family residences on one parcel, which is problematic depending on your zoning.

So I’m assuming what the township is saying is that the Doublewide really isn’t a house and you shouldn’t be living in it in the first place? I can’t see how else they would say You couldn’t stay living there while you’re building a house as many people do that live in the country. I can see how they might say that the zoning is only set up for one single family residence per property, and you may have to section off a lot on your property separate from the other land. The issue is the law is set up to allow 90 days to build next to an existing house. You can get a waiver for up to almost a year. Since we plan to build the inside our self AND we don't know what back order issues we might encounter, a year is not enough time. We are planning on two years most likely. That's where they see the problem. BUT, this is also only the second time they'd had to deal with this.

When we decided to build 2-60x120x20 high steel sheds for Hay storage, The Building shedswere already on site, The Company erection crew was laying out the foundation, My Son Sent His Wife to get the county permit, and was told that the Building Inspector, wante to modify the Building blueprints..... The Building was already here..... So my Son told the erection crew foreman to Go ahead but should some county official issued a Stop Work order... to stop......... Within 10 days both Sheds were up..... My Son had to pay a small Fine ...... But we had 1100 4x5 rounds stacked under it.... That had the earning potential equlling of $207,00 in bundles or$93,500 if sold as baled.............. Whether or not we got permits or not, we now have 5 sheds of the same design.....

It has to do with the fact we already have a double wide on our property. They don't allow more than 90 days to build and remove the second house, but you can get an extension SOMETIMES for up to a year. We don't want to be rushed into slamming it together in a year. We want to work on it and it might take 1.5 or 2 years . . .

There is something else going on. Somebody does not want you to build a house and they are making the township board do their dirty work. You'll find out after your house gets built who was against you, but they will make it a long difficult process for you. And it will be for a small, lame excuse like they don't want your too new-looking house blocking their view. Or something other selfish, lame reason.

You are mad at the wrong people. The people YOU elected are only following the rules. Believe it or not, we all have to follow the rules. Some of the idiots running for office don't think so, but it's true. So if you don't like the rules, get the rules changed. It's really that simple. @@jonny4641
