I love this song. It's just... so complex, like at 1:01 "-Piss. He drinks Piss. He drinks Piss. He sings the songs that remind him of the Piss I drink Piss down"
I've listened to this track for _years,_ no joke, and only JUST NOW do I notice that Justin Timberlake is singing "naked" every other beat. I'm shook beyond repair.
"I get knocked down, But I get up again, But I get knocked down, again, But I get up again. You're never gonna get knocked-up again. You're never gonna get knocked down." Masterful. Neil, you're my hero.
The last lyric in this song is the title of the first, "Goodbye". "Goodbye" exclusively samples Third Eye Blind's hit song. I believe Neil chose Semi-Charmed Life as such an important song to this album because it was the last big song on the top of the Pop Rock Billboard charts before All-Star took its place in 1999. So this album is a prequel to Mouth Sounds, where Smash Mouth dominates everything and becomes the answer of the entire universe.
At roughly 3:07, listen closely and you can hear the opening to Barbie Girl. I continue to be amazed by the sheer amount of layers that this song has. Like an onion.
I feel like a part of this song that isn't appreciated enough is when the Hamster Dance song kicks down the door and starts beating you to death with his sweet hamster moves
writing a comment here just so i can (hopefully) remember this comment exists years in the future because it’s just about the best thing in the world ever
***** IF you speed up the whole album like 100 times you actually get several hidden lines of smashmouth. Neil Cicierega is the musical equivalent of Cthulhu.
weirdly enough, i didn't really like bustin at first, and my first entrance was actually spirit phone through the rhythm heaven community but then i did something embarrassing in there and now i can never listen to spirit phone again
And now he's got a fourth, but I don't like Mouth Dreams as much as Sounds, Silence, and Moods. Also I highly recommend his album Spirit Phone, under the name he uses for original music instead of mashups, Lemon Demon. (If you're not familiar, check out Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, and When Robots Attack, two other good songs by him.)
Neil Cicierega's astral horrors of songs have replaced my playlists of "normal" music, and whenever someone asks what kind of music I listen to, I tell them it's hard to explain.
What were two different songs about a couple abusing 'speed' (Semi Charmed Life) and basic alcoholism (Tubthumping) got reworked into a song about what can happen if you don't have your prostrate regularly checked by a doctor. Oh, and Justin Timberlake being "nekkid" for some reason or another.
*SAMPLED SONGS:* "Doo doo doo, doo dudoo doo" in the beginning, and most of the lyrics: Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind Chant at 0:10 : Elders' Drinking Song by Difang & Igay Duana "I get knocked down, but I get up again" and most of the lyrics: Tubthumping by Chumbawumba Vocals at 2:21 : Two Princes by Spin Doctors Vocals at 2:49 : Hampsterdance by Hampton the Hampster Various instrumental parts: Rock Your Body by Justin Timberlake Various instrumental parts: Barbie Girl by Aqua
Cool Ocelot please, what is your icon. I know it, I swear to god I can nearly touch it, but my subconscious has my recollection chained inches from my own bonds.
Words cannot describe how much I love "I get knocked down, but I get up again but I get knocked down again but I get up again, you're never gonna get knocked up again, you're never gonna get knocked down"
The last song of Mouth Silence is titled "Piss" The last song of Mouth Moods is titled "Shit" They are happily married with their child, the last song of Mouth Sounds: *Smooth Flow.* ;;))))))
Neil really ruined me. He really did. He put out so much amazing crazy shit that's so unique I rarely get the giddy feeling I did when I started listening to this music. Some come close, really, close, but none have this raw and pure amazing quality.
I don't want to insult your sensibilites if you have already been here, but check out Girl Talk if you haven't. Fills most of the hole, but not quite all of it.
(Intro) Doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo. (x12) (Verse 1) I get knocked down, but I get up again. But I get knocked down again, but I get up again. (But I get knocked down again, but I get up again. You're never gonna get knocked up again, you're never gonna get knocked down.) (Verse 2) (The sky was) Gold. It was rose I was taking sips of it through my nose. (naked) And I wish I could get back there, someplace back there (naked) Smiling in the piss you would take Stop to the rhythm, will lift you up until you break It won't stop, I won't come down I keep stock with the tick-tock rhythm, I piss through my nose And I piss up I took the piss that I was pissin' and I piss again, And I piss again. I said How do I get back there, to the place where I fell asleep inside my nose How do I get myself back to the place where you said (I get knocked down) (Chorus) I want something else, to get me through this (I get knocked down) Semi-charmed kind of life, baby, baby. You're never gonna get knocked up again, you're never gonna get knocked down.) (Bridge) Doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo. (x8) (Verse 3) I believe in the sand beneath my toes The beach gives a feeling, an earthy feeling I believe in the faith that grows And the four right chords can make me cry When I'm with you I feel like I could die And that would be all right, all right (naked) And when the plane came in, she said she was crashing (naked) The velvet it rips in the city, we tripped on the urge to feel alive (naked) Now I'm struggling to survive, those days you were wearing that velvet dress (naked) You're the priestess, I must confess (naked) Those little red panties they pass the test (naked) Slide up around the belly, face down on the mattress (naked) He drinks a whiskey drink, he drinks a vodka drink, he drinks a lager drink, he drinks a cider drink. He sings the songs that remind him of the vodka drink, He sings the songs that remind him of the songs that remind him of the cider drink. He drinks piss (x4) He sings the songs that remind him of the songs that remind him of the piss beneath my toes. (I get knocked down) And you hold me, and we're broken. (I get knocked down) Still it's all that I wanna do, just a little now (I get knocked down) Feel myself, head made of the ground I'm scared, I'm not coming down (I get knocked down) No, no. And I won't run for my life (I get knocked down) She's got her jaws now, locked down in a smile But pissin' is all right, all right. (I get knocked down) (Chorus) And I want something else, to get me through this life (I get knocked down) Baby, I want something else (But I get knocked down again, but I get up again) Not listening when you say (But I get knocked down again, but I get up again) Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye (You're never gonna get knocked up again, you're never gonna get knocked down.) (Naked, naked, naked, naked)
That moment when you realize Neil combined no less that 8 largely unrelated songs together to make a song about a raging alcoholic who drank so much that he resorted to drinking his girlfriend's piss just to get the feeling of being drunk again. Jesus Christ Neil what have you done.
First discovered neils works during the beginning of the covid lockdown AND THIS STILL takes the cake as the best song over I come back to this every year and its such a catchy bop despite it being solely about piss
Never thought a song called "Piss" could make me feel so good inside. Listening to this song fills me with the fuzziness I feel when listening to any of the Mouth albums
Last night, I had a dream where I was in some kind of a store maybe and I heard someone singing the "doo-doo-doo" part from "Semi-Charmed Life" from around the corner, so I turned left and said "I get knocked down!", but then I realized it was just my friend who definitely would not have gotten the reference in real life. But then, this song started playing over the speakers, and I was like, "How do they even know who Neil Cicierega is?"
I was listening to Neil's songs during a mental breakdown, but my breakdowns often cause me to have memory loss. So I have the joy of experiencing his music for the first time twice

this is the 90s being channeled through the resonate voice of a serial killer that just kidnapped you, has you tied up and is dancing while this ejects from his throat and you're trying desperately to cut through your bindings but the hairpin keeps slipping out of your hands and he's prancing over to a baseball bat to use as a vaudeville cane and you are morbidly impressed by his dance moves and you realize that maybe he's just a supernatural human radio that wants more than anything to have an audience in his lonely life and before you know it he swings the bat at your head and--
At first, I worried that since none of my friends liked Neil's music I might be a weirdo for liking it, but after reading this, I'm definitely a weirdo. At least I'm in good company.
2:21- Love how you combined the "Do-do-do" from Semi-Charmed Kind Of Life with the Scatting from Two Princes. Two songs that already have a similar sound and vibe with each other.
punches right in the nostalgia in a way that breaks my heart but also makes me want to shake my ass. whatever wretched hell is destined for this planet, please spare neil cicierega
The fact that Neil made the mood of Hamsterdance and the Fraggle Rock theme fit something like this is just incredible. This needs like 100x more views.
