I love this. A Christian and an astrophysicist who are great friends and can banter back and forth. Too many people look down on those who are on the other side of the fence.
You should either say "a Christian and an atheist" or "a Christian talk-show host and an atheist astrophysicist" though, Christian and astrophysicist are not mutually exclusive. Being a Catholic mathematician myself, I personally know dozens of Catholic physicists including some who have worked at top levels for ESA (the European NASA) and CERN ;)

Stephen should have replied with "Be the Big Bang is the darkness". Oddly enough the first scientist to ever propose the Big Bang theory was Catholic. Not just that, he was a priest - a monsignor who was also educated in Cambridge and MIT. Father Georges Lemaitre published his scientific observations “A homogeneous universe of constant mass and increasing radius accounting for the radial velocity of extra-galactic nebulae” 2 years before Hubble did and is now widely regarded by scientist as the Father of the Big Bang. Einstein himself said of Lemaitre' theories "This is the most beautiful and satisfactory explanation of creation to which I have ever listened”!

@Denam I am an agnostic, and he made the best point of having faith in a superior existence (in general, not being a Christian, Jew, Buddhist or whatever) I have ever heard. I really like how he stresses that he is thankful for 'the chance to even exist', and also that he explains his thoughts rational, and only rational, and that he isn't particularly trying to convince others, but to only explain. I really have nothing but respect for him, it would be great seeing more people trying to argue (/think) the way he does.
@Denam Sorry, but I don't get it. I'm thankful for my life, too, but that doesn't mean I have to imagine a magic man in the sky. That has nothing to do with being thankful. And I actually care about the _truth._ I like Stephen Colbert, but I care far too _much_ for the truth to accept some nonsense like that, even from _him._ He just returned to the religion he'd been taught to believe as a child, that's all. Even _he_ doesn't claim that he discovered some evidence that it's actually _true._ Furthermore, this is the same Catholic Church which has been covering up child rape, while moving pedophile priests to new, unsuspecting parishes, where they could find fresh victims. This is the same Catholic Church that was stealing infants in Spain (telling their mothers that they'd died in childbirth) and then _selling_ them. This is the same Catholic Church which had mass graves of women and children in Ireland, while they treated like dirt even those women who survived. And this is the same Catholic Church which fights against birth control, LGBTQ rights, abortion rights, etc. Now, yes, worldwide, religious people _overwhelmingly_ believe in whatever religion and whatever god or gods they were taught to believe as children. That's just a fact. And Colbert was raised Catholic. But if child rape won't get him to at least switch to a different _sect,_ if not abandon superstition entirely, what _would?_ I heard Colbert talk about this on a Catholic Church video, too. Basically, he said he returned to the church because it made him feel good. That's really disappointing. He didn't discover some evidence that it was actually _true,_ and he still felt good despite the child rape, apparently. I don't get it, I really don't. And although I respect Stephen Colbert, I certainly don't respect this.
@@Bill_Garthright As Colbert said, it's explicitly not a position of proof for him. It's an eternal mystery, and a byproduct of his emotions, but he acknowledges it is so. He doesn't deny his humanity, he just uses it as a justification to be a better person. That, by itself, is great. Alas, it's not the most common trait in people.
+[Bill Garthright] It's possible to care about the truth so much that you make yourself, and those you come into contact with, miserable as a result. This is well recognized in the Attributes of Allah and what does He require from man. He does not want man to be enslaved to any false deity: nature, drugs, lust, money, other man, desire, or sex. He provides man with the proofs that He is the One who can redeem so that man can free himself from the slavery to any form of creation and to turn to his Creator Alone. THIS Creator Has Perfect Attributes. He is the First, nothing is before Him, the Ever Living. To Him is the Final Return where everyone will be dealt with in the Most Perfect and Just way. He does not begot nor He is begotten. Those who attribute Divinity to Jesus forget or ignore the fact that Jesus was in a mother’s womb. He needed nutrition; he was born and grew up to be a man. He was trusted with the Gospel as a Message to the Children of Israel: “For there is One God, and one mediator (i.e. a messenger) between God and men (the Children of Israel), the man Christ Jesus) (I Timothy 2:5). A man-messenger calling his nation not to worship him: “But in vain they do worship me!” (Mathew 15:9). A man who needs to eat, walk, sleed, rest, etc.. cannot have Divine Attributes because he is in need and God (Allah) is Self-Sufficient. AS far as Buddhism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Marxism, and Capitalism, there is the devotion of worshipping created being/things in one form or another. Jews had attributed a “Nationalistic” belonging to Allah. They labeled Him “The Tribal God” for the Children of Israel. Men and women following these “religions” were born with the natural inclination of submission to their Creator, Allah. It is their parents who had driven them into their respective traditions. However, once people are exposed to the Signs of Allah around them, or in the Qur’an or to someone who triggers thei Fitra (natural inclination to worship Allah Alone), the reverting process begins and that is why we see a universal spreading of Islam. In the West and despite tha many distortions of Islam in the Media, many admit that Islam may be the fastest growing Faith. No sense of fairness can be achieved without a genuine attempt to know the Word of Allah in the Qur’an and not on the 30-min-Evening News. This is the real challenge for those who seek the Truth. Man is created for a purpose: to live a life in accordance with Allah’s way. Why Not? Do we posses the air we breath? Did we create ourselves or others? Or were we ourselves the Creators? We are limited and weak. So is our right to ignore our Creator where we all need Him? ISLAM is the submission in worship to Allah Alone and it is the essence of all the Messages sent to all nations before us. Allah is All-Just and All-Wise. He does not intend confusion for His Creation. The religion accepted to Him is the one chosen by Him. Its essence must be One, because He is One. It is free from geographical, racist, and status oriented concepts. It is Perfect and it is the complete way of life. All these qualities are chosen by Allah in His Only Religion: Islam. Its details are in in the Qur’an, read it and come with an open heart because none can expose better than the World of Allah. The Qur’an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. He did not author it. He was unlettered. Its translation is available in many languages in bookstores or in an Islamic Center close to you. Take the time to read it and come/call the Islamic Center, or speak to someone who re-verted and submitted to Allah Alone.
Thank you!! I agree, it's my favorite thing about him, & I pretty much love everything about him! But the fact that he stands his ground defending his faith without flinching in debates with super-intelligent non-believers like N.G.T., Ricky Gervais, & Bill Maher- (all of whom i absolutely love, also!)- just puts him over the top for me!
Fool. The creation of the world is evidence already. How did you come to be? You refuse to believe in an eternal creator yet you believe in two timeless particles randomly colliding and subsequently (and coincidentally), THIS created our perfectly functioning world with animals, ecosystems, plants and their life-cycles, OTHER PLANETS, moons, etc?? What an arrogant, delusional and disrespectful lil insignificant human speck (as we all are, so relax) to say such bold words.
Hobbiton is just over the hill from my house, and I've never been. People travel from all over the world to visit, seems maybe I should check it out...
It's expensive at $80 but I'd recommend it as a life experience. It's extremely touristic, as you can imagine but also so well put together. The attention to detail is spectacular.
I lived in NY my entire life and never went to the top of the World Trade Center. We just take things for granted. Go! Go to Hobbiton! Five months ago I moved to New Hampshire and now I'm realizing I never even skated in Wollman Rink! So many NYC places I never saw that I'm going to now that I don't live there.
Even though I'm not a Catholic, I'm glad that we have Christian representatives like Stephen Colbert on popular television who can discuss faith and evidence intelligently. Not all Christians are the mindless stereotype people think about. There is a middle ground.
Thank you!!! I agree 100%! I'm an old-school protestant who believes in science, & am so very grateful for Stephen's lively debates with Neil, (as well as Ricky Gervais & Bill Maher- all of whom i adore, & all of whom argue brilliantly with him on questions of faith & religion). I completely understand, respect & appreciate where they & many atheists/non-believers are coming from, yet I am certain in my Christian faith. Thank God we can still have all sides represented freely, & thank you Stephen for speaking up for us!!!
I agree as well. Some of the most brilliant minded people throughout history are theists. It’s nice to see someone who approaches atheists with respect, apologetics, and comedy all in one. I think there are many people in Hollywood that share a similar passion for their faith in God, but they’re too intimidated to come forth and talk about it. I really appreciate Colbert’s boldness to address theism in front of others who are in disagreement. America needs to relearn that disagreeing is okay.
@Max Kanz - so much of our world culture is based off of Christianity. The way we've dated history, the holidays we observe and aswell as the evidence itself, experts from both sides agree that much of what is Bible history is real history. If we're talking specifically about the idea of God and creation - that debate has been long fought and I think will continue to persist for decades to come. But if Christianity continues to raise people up like Kenneth Copeland and Benny Hinn as figures that represent Christianity - Christians will always look like the ones who believe in pure fairytales.
@Max Kanz there is fact, fiction and a lot we have yet to discover. The Big Bang is an idea I stand behind, but there is still the question of cause. We cannot pretend to know everything so - I'm someone who stands more or less the middle ground.
"We just talked for an hour and a half about Life, the Universe, and Everything.." "Yes.." * looks directly at the camera as he bites down on his geekyness, and fights the urge to interrupt Neil to start a discussion about H2G2 *
Hum-hum, let's see. Newt.. new.. new massage ..ah. Here it is. New Message. You are a slightly boring and fully inconsequential existence whose inadequte attempts at relieving it's innate boredom inadvertently only succeeds in reinforcing it instead. Aaaaand ..well, I think that was all. I wish you a good day and thank you for your time.
I like Colbert a lot. He summed up theism and christianity perfectly. Theism gives him a place to put his gratitude for The unanswered questions about how and why it all began. His christian faith is an extrapolation of that. In other words, in the absence of evidence, he believes because he wants to and its comforting.
Frank Harrison exactly..and its totally disingenuous. There is no compelling evidence but the number of hard line christians who use the laws of thermodynamics to "prove god" or claim the bible is a factual historical record etc etc. Its a big delusion and massive fantasy. At least Colbert knows its a comfort blanket.
GST2 S in modern times yes. the ancients used their various "gods" to explain what was at the time inexplicable. Religion serves little real purpose these days.
"Why don't we see more supernovas? “ "We see them every night...with telescopes" That's a Thug Life meme moment. They should have played "The next episode" right then and there.
I like Stephen in the shorter chair. (They should be nearer the same height.) this is the best interview with Neil I've ever seen. Both geeking out! The Jon Stewart reverse interview was awesome too. This should be a more common feature on the late show.
“...how strange it is to be anything at all.” 07:06 That’s a salute to Stephen’s own favourite song : In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel.
Dude, I really love that song. But then one day out of nowhere I read the most unexpected and insanely inappropriate fanfiction of pregnant anne frank. And now I can't listen to the song without thinking about that. reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/5dbquj/what_are_some_nsfw_history_facts_that_do_not_get/da3j9m0/?context=1
Really, who else is cool enough to quote Neutral Milk Hotel on national television while making a case for the comparability of scientific curiosity and enduring spirituality? "Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all...."
Multiple times - He chose "Holland, 1945" as the end credits of The Colbert Report and quoted lyrics to Seinfeld on Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. He's said he likes the "strange, sad poetry”
I would love to see more of this Stephen. Actually saying things that have substance and meaning. He's actually a much more brilliant man than I thought he was.
electric_magnetic I think that it’s a valid question in this day and age. Lots of arrogant people equate being religious with being ignorant or uneducated. That’s obviously not the case, but sometimes it needs to be said to remind people.
Neil apparently had no interest (or time) to pursue it. Basically Stephen's response was the old "If I don't know the answer to a question I choose to shove this ancient mythology into that hole because I want an anthropogenic entity to thank for my existence." He literally gave the textbook 'god of the gaps' response. Why not just thank your parents for your existence?
@@stiimuli I'd say it's a more reasonable modification of the god of the gaps. Because where the standard 'god of the gaps' justification rests in the notion that 'science doesn't know everything and the unknown bits are where god is', Stephen's interpretation is more that as long as there are gaps there's a place for his faith. It's a subtle difference, but the crux is that the usual god of the gaps justification is that people who use it genuinely believe that there are things that cannot be explained because god, where as Stephen fully leaves the possibility open that if we fill in all the gaps, we may not in fact find any god there, but as long as we haven't, he doesn't feel unjustified to house his faith there.
@@RvEijndhoven If I understand your explanation correctly, instead of actually believing those gaps are where god *is* found, Stephen is recognizing god probably isn't in those gaps but decides to pretend it is anyway. Wouldn't that make Stephen's position more intellectually dishonest? I don't see how that's more reasonable.
The Big Bang Theory was formulated by a Jesuit priest. Catholic is the only science-friendly religion, faith do not oppose reason. you'd be surprised to find out how many scientist were catholic.
@@pololo2553 The Big Bang Theory was the result of CENTURIES of scientific theories and discoveries. I'd be surprised if even HALF of the people you think are christian EVER believed. The truth is, in this day and age and with so much information available, not only is the number of atheists RISING, most scientists are also non-believers. The days of religion dictating the evolution of science, are OVER.
sure you can have faith, but you are just putting it into the dark spot over and over again until science comes an enlightens you. it has been like this through the course of history and will stay the same for ever. imo it's way more exciting to think of the multiverse as unlimited, so in theory, yes, there will always be a place for believers, but practically there's no final point of exploration.
Ricky Gervais said it best when Stephen asked him the same thing he asked Neil, “Why is there something instead of nothing?” With the response “surely the bigger question is not ‘why’ but ‘HOW?’ ‘Why’ is irrelevant.”
Bingo. Ricky Gervais is a far better foil to Stephen when it comes to religious talk. NDT is fantastic with his science talks but he floundered with Stephens very articulate response. Ricky would have gobbled it up and asked for more ;)
Nah. It’s an assumption that Why is irrelevant. An unknown. If I had the choice of definitively knowing How vs knowing Why (irrelevant-but at least I’d definitively know it’s irrelevant-or relevant and why), I’d choose Why. Some people would choose How. I’d choose Why. More interesting to me.
Neil: “If you have a sample size that is large enough, rare occasions become common” Audience: “Ohhhhhh” No shit! That’s like *the* most general statement you can make 😂😂
It’s kind of amazing that Stephen can perplex Neil DeGrasse Tyson with his knowledge of philosophy in the same way that Tyson can perplex Colbert with his knowledge of physics.
I do like Stevens take on rectifying science and religion. I’m not religious myself but come from a family that is, studied both eastern and western religions in college. I find it fascinating. One thing that’s always stuck with me was my science teacher when I was 10 years old. He was a deeply religious man but taught us evolution. When we did the Big Bang he showed us (I think it was Carl Sagans Cosmos) a video where it asked the question if there is a clock (the universe) where is the clock maker? That the clock implies a clockmaker. And for my science teacher that summed up his beliefs. Science and religion were not at odds. (We also learned about Mendal and his peas and grew them. Genetics , Mendal was a monk who stumbled across this.) But my 5th grade teacher was a great. While I don’t believe, and evangelicals you can barely hold a coherent conversation with, normal believers I not only don’t mind but sometimes enjoy them questioning my non beliefs. Had a coworker I got along with who was a preacher, had some great conversations with him. Would have loved to have taken a philosophy class with him
I would've said there are 2 types of Christians. Smart Christians who take the Bible metaphorically (which allows them to reconcile their faith with Science) - and dumb Christians who take the Bible literally (which causes them to deny Science). You can have faith and still be an evidence-based thinker, as long as you're a smart Christian who reads the Bible metaphorically.
Stephen, You've just made this into my most favorite video of all time. Your words on faith sent shivers down my spine and I couldn't even love you more for this. Thank you. So much.
