Neil deGrasse Tyson talks about the science inaccuracies in movies, and how Monster's Inc. got the idea of a 4th dimension right. Taken from Joe Rogan Experience #919.
Arrival was actually one of the best movies I ever watched. It was so beautiful and well thought out. The science also was super complicated and interesting but didn't take away from the plot
@@LXW-Arts I don't think it's about the train of thought though, if you've seen his interviews in the past you know what I'm talking about. He goes on these almost verbatim sound bites every time and I think he realizes that that's entirely what his career is based on therefore he refuses to be interrupted.
Neil is that guy you invite to the house party because he's cool and everyone likes him, but you also know you can't stay in conversation with him for too long, else he'll start being insufferable. You kinda just chitchat and sip your drinks a few times, hear him tell a cool story and some clever jokes, then before he starts to focus on one thing for too long you excuse yourself to go to the bathroom and simply never return. Good people.
I’ve always loved the tents in Harry Potter that appear to be regular sized but actually have an entire floor plan inside. If that could become a reality in this lifetime, I can die in peace
@@NickRidgers i meant Neal Degress Tyson, not you or the other guy. i Love to see Neal Degress Tyson breakdown Doctor Whos "physics" and TARDIS concept
I respect your right to criticize things using your expertise but I also respect the fact that if they get it to scientifically accurate it's no longer science fiction.
Uh no, it can be 100% scientifically accurate and be fiction if the story isn't real. If you've seen 2001: A Space Odyssey, it's considered one of the most scientifically accurate science fiction movies of all time, and is science fiction nonetheless. You seem to think that realism and scientific accuracy somehow detract from the quality of a sci Fi film but I completely disagree. That's not to say that I don't enjoy sci Fi that's not realistic if it's well done, but realism makes it better in a lot of cases. And if it's TOO lacking in realism you can really ruin a story. Science fiction SHOULD be as accurate as possible, and viewers should only be required to suspend disbelief when it is necessary and enhances the experience
@@69yearsago22 can you look at a 1000 watt lamp? Can you look at the reflection of the light on a stone thats covered in dust? I realise this is a fictional concept but that is my rationalisation for it.
When we were little, all Sci fi was taken as fiction that might exist someday. Now, anything you see in Sci fi you believe is fact bc there's so much science that exists about wh we don't know (like govt/military secrets).
Sayge Blackmon Well, there are ways to make oxygen besides plants. A scientist once made a machine to produce more oxygen than a tree. That machine and trees still produced some carbon dioxide though
I had a sock end up inside a pair of basketball shorts. In between two pieces of completely sewn pieces of fabric. The sock was just twisted and bundled up towards the bottom of the leg. I showed my mother and two sisters and they couldn’t find a broken seam anywhere either and we had to cut it out! Strange things happen in our dryers, that’s for sure.
Forgive me for possibly misunderstanding this. Does this mean that phones and computer screens can be considered as visual portals to the 4th dimension? Or do we define portals with the requisite of physical access, and not just visual?
Technically no since the screens are on a “2 dimensional” plane like the table would be we can make it appear 3 dimensional by adding different focus layers but it wouldn’t be part of the 4th dimension
Its a place within a place that uses a medium to get over there but they're not related to each other since it bounces of to a different place and time we weren't able to comprehend it since we haven't experienced it and it defy our physical law of our 3rd dimension
YouthEnergyia imagine a comic strip. You are a character in it. Paper would be the 2nd dimension. The artist is in the 3rd dimension. You can see the 3rd dimension when the artist comes back to draw some more comics. But you don’t understand the 3rd dimension Bc you are limited to only perceive in the 2nd dimension.
Issue with the wormholes described in Monsters Inc is that wormholes cannot move in space, because they simply connect two points in space, not two objects. Another thing would be that they’d be spherical. So, while the doors exhibit the overall concept fairly well, they do not exhibit the nature of what is theoretically possible within our own universe.
I am shocked that Joe turned off Arrival not even mid way through. That movie is not only incredible but it’s the epiphany of what he finds interesting...
He knows damn well how funny he is. Every scientist talking a lot in public, pretty much know how they are coming across. They haven't gotten to be scientists by chance. They are good at thinking. Unlike most people...
What about the speed of sound in the opening scene of The Last Jedi when they look up from the planet and hear the ships from the first order at the same time as they arrive.....
Neil: "So I stopped commenting on Movies..." Neil (some time later): "#GuardiansoftheGalaxy I have to forgive the loud explosions in space, because I've already accepted the bipedal raccoon shooting heavy weaponry."
Jones Crimson and the best thing about rocket ( in the comics at least) is that he is structurally identical, or nearly so , to a racoon, he's just a lot smarter, so it absolutely makes no sense. you can't even say he's a space trash panda.
Why don't we see the shadows or bump into partially 4 dimensional objects, because maybe there isn't a 4d? Complex theories or Extraordinary ideas, some times are just that. There is a place in science where unicorns and fairies lives, is up to us to be able to tell the difference.
@@patrickwalsh9444 i want to believe, i bet we are not alone, just look at all the fauna around us, who is to say that other planet cannot develop some kind of fauna. but if a Four-dimensional space existed and UFOs/UAP were 4d beings, it will be normal to be constantly bumping into the 3d version of this space. it will be a constant clash.
Honestly, I love when he does that. One thing people forget is they have the ability to NOT consume his tweets if they don’t like them. It’s a simple function called MUTE.
Sometimes when people are very passionate and knowledgeable of a topic they might interrupt the false knowledge you are about to speak. Not out of disrespect, but to correct you before you repeat it. This is bc once you start repeating things, you start believing them. And this is also why a lot of smart people have social problems. Lol
i feel like neil would be exasperated and a little amused by him 😂 this is a fantastic idea though! give him a safe word too for when he can’t take his brain getting rotted further
@@Kugrox because theres no way to explain or describe it, just like he said with the ant analogy. Its like trying to imagine a new colour that youve never seen before, our brains are incapable of doing that.
LOLL this guy is such a fucking clown! he's not a scientist! he's still talking about the movie gravity. he's talking about star wars and monsters inc? LOLLLL you FUCKING idiots real scientists build nuclear bombs! not these fuckin pissy pop scientists that have space theories that ANY pothead or acidhead can equalize! AHAHAHAAHH!! what a fucking joke! all he cares about is what other people criticized him for what a petty stupid fuck ahahah!!!!!!
"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced." That's what I imagine happens when Tyson talks about Star Wars.
On the topic of The monsters ink concept. Would that mean phone are access to the 4th dimension because i can take anything from the physical world and move it into my phone (ex a picture of a skyscraper) and i always have access to it as long as i have my phone/portal
There is actually a theory for Pixar where all the movies are in one big timeline. It starts off with Brave and at the end is Monsters Inc. The doors go back in time to the time when humans were still around. Edit: The theory is called The Pixar Theory and there is this whole website about this.
After the show.. Joe: I have a portal to the 4th dimension.. Want to go? Neil: YES OF COURSE! Where is this machine?? Joe: **pulls out a baggie of DMT**
