Neil deGrasse Tyson Opens A Rocket In His Office | TIME

TIME recently went to interview Neil deGrasse Tyson and we noticed a huge crate had been delivered to his office. He was then kind enough to open it on-camera. The back story of this gift is that Neil was adamant that ABC News include the Saturn V Rocket on its list of The 7 Wonders of America. The folks at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama were so grateful, they sent Neil a replica.

A point that NDT makes very often is that the space race was an extension of the cold war and the reason we invested the time and money was because there was a "I don't want to get bombed by another country" driving force. It was not, as many of us think, a kind of "let's go explore and see what we can learn" thing.

"See these rocket nozzles at the bottom? There are five of them, hence the Saturn-Five." Um, no. Configruations for the Saturn program launch vehicles were C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4 and C-5. C-2 through C-4 were scrapped in the design stage. C-1 became Saturn I and Saturn IB. C-5 became Saturn V. Correlation of the naming with the number of engines in stage 1 is coincidental. Sorry Neil!
@Italky

People make mistakes, just because he is smart as hell doesn't mean hes going to get every detail correct.
@imcnagpc2

The c- 5 was named for the five rocket engines. Then it was renamed Saturn V . So he's right.
@alachabre
@alachabre 9 лет назад
No. C-5 was the fifth assigned design prototype. As I said, the number designation has nothing to do with the number of rocket engines in the main stage. If you don't believe me, go find the info at NASA. It's there.

Just in case no one's said this yet, to answer the question posed in the video, each F-1 engine in the first stage of the Saturn V consumed consumed about 670 gallons of propellant each second meaning a total of about 3350 gallons of propellant was consumed each second. This thing was a beast.
@EeekiE

@caddy1010 You're not stupid. I knew nothing much of Apollo till a few weeks ago. It's truly awesome stuff! What you've said is absolutely correct. the S+C stays in orbit around the Moon waiting for the LM to touch down, take off, and rejoin. Then all 3 connected parts rocket back in to Earth's gravity. It only takes a small amount of fuel in the S+C mod to do this, as it never had to come from the moon's surface, is already going fast, and only has less than 1/6th gravity to escape from.

@spydertub3 Funnily enough, when Tyson applied to Cornell, his application actually attracted the attention of Carl Sagan, who was a member of the Cornell faculty and promptly tried to recruit him to Cornell (Tyson ended up going to harvard). This guy is truly amazing. His knowledge of the sciences is so vast, yet he still finds every little detail fascinating, most likely no less that the first time he learned it. (not to mention his reaction on opening the rocket, of course) Also, as Albert Einstein once said, "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." Well, Neil deGrasse Tyson explained a few basics of ROCKET SCIENCE to us peasants in 2 minutes. To which I say, bravo Mr. Tyson, you are a legend.

What you see here is the pleasure that scientific knowledge can bring. The reason he is so excited is that he knows and deeply understands the truly stupendous achievement of the Saturn 5 and Apollo programmes. When you really grasp a part of science, and realise that it is actually real, and not some fairy tale, it can be hard to stop smiling. Kids, science is not just learning facts, it's actually a philosophy and a framework for interacting with the universe around you. And it works.

@caddy1010 It leaves Earth and heads toward the Moon at 17,500mph+ As it gets closer to the moon it accelerates as it's being pulled in, and it goes in to orbit still at 1000's of miles per hour. The Lunar Module goes down, meets back up at the Service+Command module, and then that chunk of Service module is fired to leave the Moon's gravity (easy) and head towards Earth, which starts pulling it back in by Gravity pretty soon, with massive effect. The hard work is leaving Earth.

@caddy1010 The bit he had his fist around is all responsible for getting from the Moon back to Earth. The bit he was referring to never touched the Moon. The bit he was referring to IS the only piece to make it back to Earth (intact). The bit he had his fist around was the Service Module, which contained fuel to go from the Moon back to Earth. Below the Service Module would have sat the Lunar Module (the only bit to reach the Moon).
