Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson recalled President John F. Kennedy's famous "We will go to the moon" speech at Rice Stadium and discussed the drivers of exploration, but what he most wanted to talk about at Rice University's 100th commencement ceremony May 11 was Apollo 8.
"It was unheralded but it was the first mission to leave Earth and go somewhere else," Tyson said of the 1968 mission around the moon that prepared NASA -- and humanity -- to land on another world less than a year later.

These graduates were so fortunate to have such an inspired speaker/person to speak at their graduation. I just truly wonder how many appreciated this? The buildings that were shown in the video were amazing,.

All I can say is the fact that he is correct in everything he said in that speech. Which leads to the relevant question...... How do we take war and money from the list of "drivers" to simply "galvanize" a continuous R&D effort/policy that will always make a difference that will prevent the first one and always generate the latter? Which by the way, is exactly his point.

In reply to gheorghe cojocaru below: This is not the spot where Kennedy gave his famous speech. I was there, with other students all wearing ridiculous looking Freshman beanies, in Rice Stadium during Freshman Week of 1962. Upper classmen were upset that the speech was given before they got to campus. There was sparse attendance, since Rice had a total of only a few thousand students and its stadium is huge - one of the early Super Bowls was played there. All I remember from the speech was, "Why does man want to go to the moon? Why does Rice play Texas?!" Tensions with Cuba were high back then, and when Kennedy was speaking a small plane flew low and directly over the stadium with a banner that said, "Enforce the Monroe Doctrine." You'll never see anything near a president like that again.

The scientific community prefers robots because they're cheaper, less risky, don't need to come home and able to get a lot more samples done quicker. Niel wants human astronauts because he thinks people need "scientific heroes" to motivate them. I'm unsure if he's right but given the relatively low cost and high potential rewards, i think it's worth funding. We have robots because they're a lot cheaper basically.

It wouldn't cost very much money to go to Mars. We can't tell what we'd find out if we got there but it seems to have more of a chance of finding something interesting than other things we could invest a similar amount of cash in. Tyson often says giving us scientific 'heroes' like manned astronauts will motivate people to innovate and enter science. I tend to think we should invest most of our science budget in more useful things than going to Mars but it'd cost so relatively little, why not?
@WorthlessWinner
@WorthlessWinner 10 лет назад
Tyson would disagree with exploration being in our blood. He insists we need war or profit to motivate us to do it, as he spends half this speech saying. "We haven't lost our will, we never had the will we tell ourselves we had" as he says half way in. He also says, rightly i think, that the culture of innovation is probably more important than the spinoff tech it produces. I think we'd do best to invest in more practical science but it'd cost so relatively little to go to Mars, why not go?

"I don't know" is an honest answer. The universe is either one way or the other but that doesn't mean your beliefs are. You can't honestly tell me that there's no question you're agnostic on. What is dark energy and dark matter? These are questions all of us have to be agnostic about. If you don't know calculus, you'll probably be agnostic about calculus questions. If you haven't tasted a food, you'll likely be agnostic about whether you like it. It's possible to honestly not know something.

Dude. It's an idiom. He's referring to the fact that people don't want to live poor. He's saying "don't want to die poor" for rhetorical reasons, to 'rhyme' with the "don't want to die" motive. I don't see why you're refusing to get that he means "don't want to be poor while alive." Is english not your first language? maybe that could explain it?

Queen Isabel of Spain funded Columbus to plant the spanish flag on any newly discovered land, to find a shorter route to India, and to bring back silver. Columbus was driven by science, Isabel by money. Says NDT in more detail in another keynote video. Harari has a similar story about, if I remember correctly, the military expedition of James Cook, who discovered New Zealand, and conquered it.

More to the point than my previous comment: both statements are consistent. Queen Isabel paid big money, not for exploration, but with the expectation of getting a return of investment. Columbus set sail, motivated by exploration, ie science.
