In the the movie, Sweeney throws Mrs. Lovette into the cooker when he finds out that she lied to him about his wife dying. He accidentally killed his wife, thinking she was a crazy old woman.

Tobias “Toby” isn’t “sent down the chute.” He figures out that Sweeney Todd is a serial killer and avenges the death of Mrs. Lovett.

Well in stage productions he's a mentally damaged young adult

Vreeland Gardner In the stage play Toby is a young adult, they changed his role to a child role in the movie (to pull at heart strings more? I don't really know). At this point NPH was around 28 and Ken Jennings (who did the role first) was in his early thirties. Movies based of off musicals usually have some differences.

hi this comment is a whole year late lol but my friend played toby in a community theater production at 13! I think different directors choose to cast it to their own vision, although I think the role is a lot more effective when played by an adult. I also believe that's how it was originally supposed to be written.

sophia Yeah, Toby can be played by a kid or a teen/young adult. It mainly depends on what the director wants. I’ve seen it done both ways in stage productions, and they both work. On one hand you can have a kid who sees Mrs. Lovett as the closest thing to a kind mother figure he has, and on the other hand you can have a mentally-challenged young man who quickly becomes attached to Mrs. Lovett because she’s kind to him. Personally I prefer adult Toby’s (especially since typically older actors are better at acting out the ending scene) but it can be done either way.

Usually the role of Tobias is portrayed as an mentally handicapped adult.
