"And if the music stops, there's only the sound of the rain All the hope and glory, all the sacrifice in vain And if love remains, though everything is lost We will pay the price, but we will not count the cost." Rest in peace, Neil.
one of my favorite Rush tunes. in all the Peart writing after his death, I was sad to hear that this was, "quote" not one of their better tunes! totally disagree!!! beautiful lyrics, beautifully sung, with crisp Neil and some awesome power chords from Alex. simple, powerful and original, and SUCH a thrill to hear Neil describe his process. oh, how we effing miss him. :(
The day that I heard of Neil's death was the start of 3 days of steady rain in most of the MidWestern US, including here in SE Michigan. I don't know if I'll ever be able to listen to this song while alone without tearing up a little. Or a lot.
That’s what made him so great. Even when there were no lyrics like in his solos the way he played was so musical. I can listen to Neil’s solos and never get bored. Other drummers not so much.
More likely, Geddy was supporting the drums with his vocal phrasing. Drum tracks are recorded first, and while Neil wrote the lyrics, it was Geddy who was in charge of lyrical patterns and phrasing.
I remember coming home to my mom crying her eyes out in 1977, I asked her what was wrong and she told me Elvis died. I sat with her but didn't fully understand at the time. Now I know how she felt. I'm still crying
It's weird for me as a drummer. His playing was incredible but his mind is what impressed me the most. One of the best creative thinking drummers ever. God blessed Neil.
Yeah, I doubt he'd buy into that, although I think he has managed to find a way to love his life going through what would kill most people, especially artists. A true talent, yes, but also hard-working and dedicated to innovating himself. No deities required ; )
It's certainly true that Neil was one of the greatest, if not *the* greatest, drummers in rock history. But I would go further: he was one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.
You know, when celebrities I have appreciated have died, yes I have been sad to hear about it, but never so much so that I was moved to tears, until Neil. In fact I still find myself choking up when I stumble across videos of him like I did today here. I mean, on the one hand I find it odd. I never knew him personally, but on the other hand, he was such a humble and outstanding talent, and his music and live performances were such a huge part of my life, I guess it can only be expected. What a legacy he left.
Considering Neil’s struggle with being in limelight and being a private person, there’s great irony that so many fans related to him so much. 3 weeks now since he passed and I’m still having problem comprehending he’s gone.
Three years on it's still terrible. It was odd that Neil never understood why so many strangers felt like they knew him; he was in our lives daily with his lyrics and music. Just because we were not a part of his life didn't mean that he wasn't a part of ours. Odd that such a thoughtful and insightful guy never saw that. The only famous person I'd hoped to meet. Would never have gone up to him in public to bother him, though. Far too much respect for him.
"Work on getting it established then become free with it".....Neil, you've become established as one of the worlds greatest, creative drummers and humanitarians....now it's time to be free. RIP Professor.
Part of me wants to put away the memory of Rush as I knew them. I start to feel much sorrow, when I watch the videos, I feel great loss. Yet somehow I always start watching and listening again, and find happiness and a smile for being able to enjoy their music since I was a teen.
He seemed like a sweet man. :( Thank you for being a world class musician for the ages, and for helping us learn the drums. Thank you for your poetry. Most importantly....thank you for being a good person.
The fact that he could take that one-two punch and find a way up out of the very depths of grief to get on with it was his greatest achievement. Most would have poured themselves into a bottle or some other form of self-destruction.
If look at where he started and how he has dedicated himself to learn, and grow as a drummer it's remarkable. Even if you're not into Rush you have to be inspired by his genius.
Being able to watch Mr. Peart at any time on you tube..it's like Mr. Peart hasn't left the planet..it's kinda soothing.but knowing the reality .makes you feel bitter sweet.. Rock on Rush fan's. Semper Fi
As musicians, each member of Rush would have been a standout in any other setting. In Rush, however, Geddy, Alex, and Neil were just "the guys in the band"... I saw them back in high school on their Farewell to Kings tour and followed them ever since. Rush always had great albums that showed a tremendous amount of time and thought but their live shows were fun to watch because they'd smile, cut up, joke around, and enjoy the show as much as the fans. Rush retired as they did everything else in their career, with class and on their terms. Thanks for the music, you guys really added something positive to the world.
The man didn't even finish high school but what a brilliant thinker, drummer, writer, and all around spectacular musician.....Listen to Pieces of Eight
Saw you 5 times live. As a drummer, I really cannot say I am one after watching and hearing you and your lyrics for 3 plus decades. Best regards Neil,🇨🇦
Earth shaking loss......immeasurable knowledge and virtuosity gone forever. If he hadn’t done so already....his legend will only grow until he eclipses all of his contemporaries.
Definitivamente uno de mis bateristas preferidos, increíblemente virtuoso, vivirá por siempre en nuestros recuerdos por el gran legado que nos dejo en sus percusiones, descanse en paz Neil Peart. Definitely one of my favorite drummers, incredibly virtuous, will live forever in our memories through his music and the great legacy he left us in his percussions, rest in peace Neil Peart.
Just a humble 'thank you' to Neil Peart, for being such an integral part in providing great vibes, sound, and joy to my life, and countless others! Creativity has a way of connecting with others in ways you cannot imagine!
Miss Lerxst, Dirk and the Professor... it's tragic that they had to retire. But, ''tis better to go out on their own terms than become something that doesn't measure up to RUSH's extremely high standards. This particular song is one of my top 10 RUSH offerings and it brings back many happy memories. Enjoy your retirement lads... you owe us nothing! Happy happy belated birthday Pratt!
I could listen to Neil talk about how to watch grass grow! What a treasure! I saw him in Vegas on their final tour which at the time we didn't know it would be the last time : ( God bless you always Neil!
What can we say, he is THE master in his craft and can do whatever he wants at this stage. He's earned his glory, he's earned his fortune, he is unparalleled in his talent and work ethic, that truly does make him free. I can't imagine what that must feel like.
I hope to see you there Neil......your biggest fan for 40 plus years. I switched to guitar after 27 years drumming. I've missed it. And now I miss you. RIP the greatest of our time. Neil Peart. Poetic Percussion...
What a loss and shock. We will miss this ultimate master of percussion. Met him about 30 yrs ago, what a great down to earth gentleman. Gods speed brother.
I think Neil has contributed greatly in moder music and drumming. There’s so much that our bodies cam endure and so much we can tolerate. Playing 150+ shows every other year for 40 years is tough, especially when you play like him and expect so much from yourself like he does. He just changed the game.
Neil, I am so humbled and grateful to have been able to enjoy your art. Of all the paths you could have chosen in life you truly picked the greatest one. Thank You Sir!
A typical masterclass of drumming from the professor. Lyricist poet Genius and a very humble human being, he inspired a generation and played his part with my favourite band of all time. Rest in peace Neil I hope you are reunited with lost family on the other side. 🙌
Neil is the reason that I ever sat behind a drum kit. He is truly one of the best drummers ever to have graced a stage. Thank you for your years of musical inspiration.
I agree, the song changed the way I played drums for ever and out band played the song and then the Trees, I had been a guitar player but there were too many of them where I lived so I played drums instead and had to stop as Mr. Peart did, retire if you will, arthritis has gotten the better of my hands and back.
I played drums in a band to support myself while going to school back in the 80's. I had no idea the level of effort and focus people like Neil executed in their craft. I was nothing but a hack. God rest this gentle giant of a man who gave all of us so much.
@@grabasandwich The interview opens saying he'd spend 39 of his 60 years in Rush. He was born in 1952, so I find that confusing. Any idea how that makes sense if it took place in 2017?
This is not only my all time favourite RUSH song, this is my all time favourite song of all. It has been my ringtone for over 15 years. Thank you Neil for sharing this with us and thank you Hudson Music!!!
@@rushaholic Nice choice. Available Light is one I'd add to that. Everything about it is perfect. Of the classics I still love Subdivisions because it brings back some special memories for me.
To be the best, no matter what your discipline, you can never stop working training or practicing, the Professor always made it look easy though! The world will never be the same. RIP
such a beautiful song, and the craft of the part is really understated and fits it beautifully. my faves and inspiration from rush started in the early years with the dazzling hand foot triplets, but this drum part suggests to me a deep passion for the song, and the message within the lyrics, a feeling that what is being said is important, and the music should back that up but not distract from it. so cool
