At the end of the solo he is doing a sort of tribute to jazz, and to Buddy Rich in particular. I believe that all of the music is in the form of samples that he triggers with electronic symbols - he isn't playing to a sound track, he is "creating" the sound track along with the regular drums. The variety makes it interesting and amazing. Going from just drumming away on a single drum (snare??) that had you amazed - up to the combination of electronic and acoustic.

Neil did a drum solo in every show. Incredible to think about maintaining that level of activity through a 3 hour show. I always say that it looks like the film was sped up, but it's not, lol.

Neil had the enviable skill of true limb independence, meaning he could play different beats with each of his limbs, all at the same time. His drum kit is actually two kits. He initially starts on the electronic drums (tiny bass drum), then after the rotation he is playing the analog kit with the conventional snare and big bass drum. The "bells" he is playing is on a Mallet Kat, which is a programmable electronic key pad. So he can add custom samples in addition to the standard bells/xylophone sounds. Love it when he casually flips the stick in the air and catches it so nonchalantly. Like he wasn't doing enough already! No doubt Neil is the GOAT!!!

I saw Rush on four different tours in the 80s and 90s, and each of Neil’s solos was different, and they were all great. He usually had little sections that carried over… like the cowbell bit, because I think they were favorites of his (and the fans). He was, quite simply, The Professor.

PS - The coolest thing about his soloing performance is that it is composed (Not improv), and he strove to play it the same way every night.

Percussionists.....are such a different breed. I briefly entertained dating one in college. She invited me to a recital.....and their concentration is their passion. She was playing drums and xelophone (that what its called), I think she would have killed anyone who would break her concentration. And for those of us who knew her, would have beat anyone to the punch. Just sitting, listening, and watching her intensity to detail was astounding. Their intensity and concentration is amazing.

I have never seen a solo like his before. Compositionally it’s in a league of its own. He put so much thought and practice into not only how to play it but how to arrange it. It was the implementation of everything he learned up until that moment and he kept, added, expanded and dropped various parts for each tour. Based on the interviews the solo he put together for their last tour R40 had the most meaning for him. If I remember right I read he said it was the culmination of everything he spent a lifetime learning about drums, percussion and playing. It was a master percussionist at work at his craft.

ODIN: Since you asked, the answer is "yes, several times". His solos evolved as he expanded his breadth of many different styles over the years. I can say that each Peart solo over the 30 years I was fortunate enough to have witnessed this man was incredible in it's own right. I am so heartened to see so many people doing reactions having the technological resources to experience the Rush Rabbit Hole. I am truly happy for all those who never had the chance to witness them live, yet still are clearly moved to appreciate the music; some to the point of confessing themselves as having become fans. Kudos to you all! At the same time i am sorry for those who never had the chance to experience my boys in-person because, in my mind, 2 primary things that can never be appreciated without being there: 1: You don't just hear the music and see them working their music. No, at a live show you literally feel the music; especially right in your chest and abdomen. 2: The energy created by the crowd, and a semi-conscious sense of being at-one with 20,000 other people cannot be replicated in any other way. P.S. The instrument you asked about is an electronic xylophone. And it has the capability, through the magic of modern technology to be set to sound like other, similar instruments such as chimes, concert 'bells', vibraphone, and others. Keep rockin', Odin! And know that my heart is warmed to see your enjoyment when listening/watching great musicians playing great music (and I am certain that I am not alone)!! -kurt in Minneapois, Minnesota, USA

Since I don't see it in the comments anywhere, the keyboard instrument he plays melodies on is called a MalletKAT. It is essentially a programmable MIDI marimba.

The instrument you asked about is a DrumKat. It's basically an electronic marimba or xylophone. It mimics "keyboard percussion", which is a family of tuned percussion instruments with keys laid out like a piano allowing percussionists to play melodies like a pianist does.

It only feels like yesterday when I was in Wembley arena on this tour watching the drum solo in absolute awe. Niel needs to be appreciated for what he was and considered himself, a percussionist, much more than just a drummer to keep the timing, he drove the songs, the drum beats he favoured were off beat and unusual signatures and in his own words "not because it's easy, because it's hard" Seeing him play live was a massive honour, you appriciate him more seeing him in the flesh, little things like seeing him drop a stick and grab another one without skipping a beat, unreal to see. Towards the end of the live 1981 recording of Xanadu you hear a very prominent "Ahhhhh!" when Niel has dropped a stick and you see Alex laughing at him!

Hello, Canadian and Rush fan here , Neil Peart is not a drummer, he is a percussionist since he plays more than just the drums. As for the instrument you were asking about, it is an electronic instrument that he can program to make a variety of sounds, in this one it's doing a marimba which is an African instrument similar to a xylophone but made out of wood. Enjoy the journey of Rush, it's quite a trip.

The "keyboards" are a type of electronic xylophone. I've seen several of their shows - they were always on top of their game. With a similar (the same?) instrument on other solos he uses the pads as triggers for samples. I'm always amazed at how he can move his hand 3 feet and hit the correct one without seeming to look at them. Thanks for your reactions!

During the middle "waltz" section6, Peart was playing 3/4 with his feet (bass drum and tambourine sounds) while soloing over that with his hands, often in contrasting time signatures. This level of limb independence is very hard to achieve. I can't remember seeing a better example of polyrhythms demonstrated. It's damn hard to do.

In his defense, it wasn’t on purpose, I’m sure. He’s too much of a fan and he IS NEW. He’ll get it, I’m sure. We tend to forget that a lot of these people really haven’t heard this before. We can cut them a little slack, ok? It’s a Newbie thing.

You do not really understand there is more going on than you really know. He is also playing electric drums and pre-recorded sound tracks with his feet and hands. And that is not even his entire kit there.
