People have been saying that since back in the 1980s. It’s true. If you were to ask every favorite drummer in every famous band 99.9% of them sight Neil Peart as their favorite drummer. About 75% of them will say that it was Peart that inspired them to take up the drums. Everyone from Dave Grohl, Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Taylor Hawkins and many, many others have said so. I’m a guitarist and have been playing in bands and recording studios since the 1980s and every drummer I ever met was a massive Peart fan and it seemed that the better the drummer was, the more into Neil they were. Even very young drummers of RU-vid, like Avery Molek and Jonah Rocks are all huge Peart fans also. Many of those kids have been covering Peart’s drumming and up,loading videos since they were 6 years old. Some of their videos are jaw dropping. Just seeing how good a six or eight year old drummer can be.

The Drum Master- Drumming has the power to unite people, no matter how varied their language or cultural background might be. On a recent trek through Africa, Neil Peart had a singular experience that proved just that. "I was in Gambia, walking through a small village, and I heard the sound of a drum. So of course I was curious! I looked into a compound and I could hear the drumming coming from a curtained room. I walked up to a woman doing laundry in front of the room. She could see my interest in the sound, so she waved me to go in. Inside I found a young, white missionary from a nearby Catholic school. Sitting across from him was the commanding presence of the local drum master. He was attempting to show the missionary how to play any kind of beat. The missionary was trying as hard as he could, but he wasn't having a lot of success." After a time the drum master, frustrated by the missionary's lack of ability, noticed the other man who had come into the room. The master had no idea who this person was, but he thought to himself, "Why not see if he can play?" According to Peart, what happened next was fascinating. "The drum master gestured to me to try and play a rhythm. So we began playing together, and he started smiling because he could tell I had a rhythm - maybe not his rhythm, but a rhythm of some kind. We were playing and playing, building the intensity, and little kids started coming in, laughing at the white man playing drums. Then a few women came into the room, and everybody began dancing to our beat! The master and I even started trading fours. It wasn't a spoken thing, but he could tell that I would lay out and listen to what he was doing for a certain amount of time, and then he would do the same. It was just a magical moment." When they finished, a confused and startled missionary ran up to Peart and asked, "How can you do that?" Chuckling to himself, Neil politely responded, "I'm in the business."

Saw them actually two times here in Germany. Saw ths solo too in Oberhausen. Just awesome. The professor was a very unique person who suffered big losses in his life. He was always NOT into interviews and let that to Geddy and Alex. That was however not against fans or admirers, he just didn't like that and said something like : It's ok when fans admire me, but I dont like them running around me and cheer etc. He was one of the best drummers ever and the Lyrics he wrote were just outstanding. He was a poet! R.I.P Neil. You will always be remembered!

Neil essentially had two drum sets in one kit: A digital drum set with which he could trigger different sounds and events like the rotating stage, and an acoustic side that he goes to in the second third of the drum solo. And you’ll also notice that Neil does several little mini sets with slightly different styles. At one point he even changes his grip to a more traditional side grip rather than the matchstick grips that he normally used.

Just some general info, Neil is in his late 50's when he performed this. He starts out playing the electronic portion of the kit (one with the small base drum). When the kit rotates, he switches to his acoustic set. I have to comment on your comment about him playing all the drums, that they weren't just props. Funny you should mention that, because I went to a Dream Theater concert way back when, where Fates Warning was opening for them. The Fates Warning drummer had this huge kit like Neil, but when FW was finished with their set, before the roadies could come in and tear it down, Portnoy of DT walked down to the stage and I kid you not took out a handkerchief and started dusting off Fates Warning drummer's cymbals, cause dude didn't touch them! LMAO!!! I think my friends and I laughed all the way home because of that. Hell, I'm STILL laughing! Thanks a lot for reacting! I really enjoyed watching your appreciation of The Professor doing what he did so well.

I just happened upon this video and would like to say how refreshing it is to see younger people still enjoy the boys. I have been an avid concert fan of RUSH since I attended the show in Toronto (June 1976) that was recorded and released as 'All the World's a Stage' album. I have been a fan since Working Man released in '74 and loved 2112 even more. I have seen them more than most, but less than many others with 11 shows under my belt. The last was R40 in Buffalo New York and it was a real treat since our son actually took us to see them. Over the 50+ years of concert-going and over the 500+ concerts from over 100 bands, this man was by and far the best drummer to ever take the stage. it is just that plain and simple. We will miss him for years and my thoughts and prayers still go out to the boys, their families, and to RUCH fans everywhere.

Was lucky enough to see them 7 times live in the UK between 1983 & 2013 & it was only when I had a side view seat on the Clockwork Angels tour at Manchester Arena in 2013 that I realised watching Neil side-on just how hard he was hitting the drums for 3 hours. Simply the best & a unique band who have left us a fabulous catalog of music to enjoy. Some bands are quickly forgotten when they end, but I think Rush will live on & stay relevant for many many years just like Zeppelin.

This is what happens when a human being explores the boundaries, limits, and possibilities of what we are physically capable to achieve... and blows right past them! Obsessive yes, but truly a master of his craft... R*I*P* Neil

His dynamics were otherworldly. He was such a quiet guy and he went through so much in his life... Its so sad but he took his emotions out on his drums.

Neil is shy. I think he feels most comfortable with the big drum kit. Back in the 70’s I would listen to Xanadu and have to wonder how does he do this without seeing him play it. Black and white TV no cable lol.

His drum solos are the only ones on the planet that nobody would use for a bathroom break like is done for every other band out there.

He was my inspiration growing up along with John Bonham. My favorite current drummers are Mike Mangini and Mike Portnoy both have played or are playing with Dream Theater. Neil is the one who really showed me that drummers don't have to sit in the background and keep a beat; they could also be musical. He also inspired me to write lyrics as well and I have for 3 albums of the five I have recorded.

This was a big loss. R.I.P Professor. Got to see them many times over the years and every time was Breath Taking! For a three man band. And yes the drums were brought in on four sections when they came here. 🤘☮️

Neil Peart was very much a philosopher, a deep thinker, with an eloquent way of expressing his musings about the world. I know he was very self-critical of his art and expected a lot from himself, but let's face it, his worse day drumming is leaps and bounds better than anyone else's best day. So sad he has left us but very grateful we have his musical legacy to admire and enjoy.

Kudos 👍. Never thought you'd get to a pure insanity instrumental/solo. Rush was one of the first and finest important trios from Canada to impact my ears. I never knew they were Canadian or a trio. Geddy Lee, the bass guitar player, also played the keyboards. May Eddie Van Halen and Neil Peart jam for God in Heaven for Eternity until the day Robert Plant and Jimmy Page join them 😮 and what a super group that will be.

Something most people didn't about Neil Peart ( Peart is pronounced with a long e ) is that he was able to train his mind to disconnect his hands from his feet, giving him the ability to play in two different tempos at the same time.

that cross hands thing he does is so so so difficult to do that well live not many drummers can do that and that is an example of why he is drummers' drummer

Though I play the guitar now, Neil Peart was the reason I picked up sticks in my teens (early 80's). Most great drummer in the modern era will reference Peart as an influence. There are many great drummers and then there's Peart, just my opinion.

RIP the professor. Greatest drummer ever. I have seen him numerous times live and his performances were the highlight of Rush shows. All 3 Rush members were awesome but he was the singular key part that made that band great.

Before electric drums he had real persussion instruments around the set. Chimes bells. And what ever else that existed

The three time thing he did 1 23. He said he would practise with the pattern in strict time but speed up the Tom' patterns so it would be off time to each other

I can't believe every time I watch someone react to this video no one catches it when he plays chopsticks on the cow bells. Intentionally put into his solo as a representation of the basic fundamentals of when a musician first starts out playing music. Which is ironic and humorous considering all the other things he does in this solo. He was the best!!!

I hope you noticed the mix of analog drums in conjunction with digital drums and cymbals and and digital pad that he treats as a xylophone and he was just… and then mixing 80’s style drum licks with everything else he knew. one of a kind in all aspects. RIP
