A grenade is an explosive weapon typically thrown by hand (also called hand grenade), but can also refer to a shell (explosive projectile) shot from the muzzle of a rifle (as a rifle grenade) or a grenade launcher. The Heckler & Koch MP5 (German: Maschinenpistole 5) is a 9x19mm Parabellum submachine gun, developed in the 1960s by a team of engineers from the German small arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch. There are over 100 variants and clones of the MP5,[10] including some semi-automatic versions. By and large, submachine gun class weapons were largely designed around existing pistol-type cartridges which, for their time, offered good man-stopping capabilities as targets were generally unarmored. In 2018 the Russian military began introducing a pair of new rifles from the AK family-the AK-12 and the AK-15-as eventual replacements for the AK-74M. The AK-12 retained the 5.45-mm calibre that had been introduced with the AK-74, but the AK-15 reverted to the Soviet-era 7.62-mm round. Both weapons featured a modernized chassis that allowed for the mounting of scopes, forward grips, and other tactical accessories. Kalashnikov assault rifles remain the basic shoulder weapons of many armies that once had political and military ties to the Soviet Union, and they have long been the favoured weapon for many guerrilla and nationalist movements throughout the world. The symbolic value of the AK-47 to such movements is demonstrated by its presence on the coats of arms of numerous countries as well as on the flag of Mozambique. It has been estimated that some 100 million AKs have been produced-fully half of them outside Russia, and many of those under expired Soviet-era licenses or no license at all. A full range of weapons that can trace their design history back to the AK-47 are produced by the Izhmash armaments company in Izhevsk, Russia.Despite their obvious advantages, the AK-47 and the AKM were considered by the Soviet military to have problems with accuracy, mainly because of recoil forces generated by the powerful 7.62-mm round and other forces known as blowback that were generated by the weapons’ heavy internal mechanisms. Those problems were partly addressed during the 1970s, when the AKM was replaced by the AK-74, which adapted the basic Kalashnikov design to a smaller 5.45-mm round with a higher muzzle velocity of 900 metres per second. A later version of the AK-74, the AK-74M, was the main infantry weapon of the Russian army into the 21st century.

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II is a single-seat, twin-turbofan, straight-wing, subsonic attack aircraft developed by Fairchild Republic for the United States Air Force (USAF). In service since 1976, it is named for the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, a World War II-era fighter-bomber effective at attacking ground targets, but commonly referred to as the "Warthog" or "Hog".[4] The A-10 was designed to provide close air support (CAS) to friendly ground troops by attacking armored vehicles, tanks, and other enemy ground forces; it is the only production-built aircraft designed solely for CAS to have served with the U.S. Air Force.[5] Its secondary mission is to direct other aircraft in attacks on ground targets, a role called forward air controller-airborne; aircraft used primarily in this role are designated OA-10. The Lockheed AC-130 gunship is a heavily armed, long-endurance, ground-attack variant of the C-130 Hercules transport, fixed-wing aircraft. It carries a wide array of ground-attack weapons that are integrated with sophisticated sensors, navigation, and fire-control systems. Unlike other modern military fixed-wing aircraft, the AC-130 relies on visual targeting. Mikhail Kalashnikov (1919-2013) was a Soviet soldier who fought in World War II against Nazi Germany in which he was shot and wounded at the Battle of Bryansk. During his hospital stay he was inspired to create a new weapon, as the old-fashioned Soviet carbines were difficult to use and presented various complications for Red Army soldiers. Upon leaving the hospital in 1942, Kalashnikov went to the workshop, where he began to manufacture his designs. This new project caught the attention of his superiors and he was transferred to the Moscow Aviation Institute to work with more resources. In 1943, Kalashnikov created a rifle that used the 7.62x39mm cartridge, but his prototype was not chosen to serve the Russian army; It is said that he had to redesign it, acquiring knowledge from the study of the German Sturmgewehr 44 (Stg.44) rifle, although its mechanisms are very different. For this reason, some authors believe that many modern weapons, such as the M16 rifle and the AK-47 itself, have taken many technical solutions from the Sturmgewehr 44, and owe their existence to this model. This fact is disputed, since all the systems used in the Sturmgewehr 44 (curved magazines, stamped sheet metal construction, semi-rigid roller locking system, folding stock, etc.), already existed in various previous weapons. The Heckler & Koch G11 is a non-production prototype assault rifle developed from the late 1960s-1980s by Gesellschaft für Hülsenlose Gewehrsysteme (GSHG) (German for "Association for Caseless Rifle Systems"), a conglomeration of companies headed by firearm manufacturer Heckler & Koch (mechanical engineering and weapon design), Dynamit Nobel (propellant composition and projectile design), and Hensoldt Wetzlar (target identification and optic systems). The rifle is noted for its use of caseless ammunition. It was primarily a project of West Germany, though it was of significance to the other NATO countries as well. In particular, versions of the G11 were included in the U.S. Advanced Combat Rifle program. In 1990, H&K finished the development of the G11, intended for the Bundeswehr and other NATO partners. Although the weapon was a technical success, it never entered full production due to the political changes of German reunification and lack of procurement contract.[3] Only 1000 units were ever produced, some of which made their way into the hands of the Bundeswehr.
