I was there too - poor Milnes who followed couldnt quite match up to this and then all that drama with Domingo and Carreras and then Caballe cracking her pianissimo in Pace mio Dio - but it was an amazing concert. For me Cappuccilli was the highlight.
@@andymanland It was really quite an eventful night. Domingo (with 1 aria and conducting the Overture to Forza) and Carreras were scheduled to appear. Then all of a sudden Domingo came on stage instead of Carreras and performed the L'Arlesienne aria. Carreras ended up not singing at all. The next day the press was full of what had happened backstage. Domingo had apparently changed the order of various singers' appearances in order to allow him a larger break between his singing and his conducting. Carreras was not consulted on that and found himself in another slot once the concert had begun. He was so furious that he walked out and went home. Of course during the concert the audience was not aware of what had happened so most people thought Carreras had fallen sick. Domingo and Carreras did not speak for years but apparently when Carreras became ill Domingo contacted him and apologized and of course everybody knows they were re-united for the incredibly famous 3 Tenors series.
