Neo Geo AES - Why I don't own it any more

The Neo Geo home console was always the holy grail for a lot of us growing up. It was the arcade hardware and the arcade games but consolized for home use. It was very expensive though and hard to get which only made the mystery of it more appealing. Eventually I was able to get one of these and I had some great experiences... but I ended up selling it and moving on. Why? Well let me explain.

Been looking for reasons NOT to blow my hardly earned money on an AES and a couple of carts. I know it's unreasonable and it's good to hear your story to confirm my bias :) building a nice MiSTer setup now.

I couldn't agree with you more. I've been there and realised, despite the nostalgia involved, there comes a point where we have to realise we have another option to get back into retro gaming at a fraction of the cost of maintaining the original hardware and buying the games. I'm happy now with Retroarch and all my handheld consoles.

I remembered when you did that amazing unboxing video of it when it came from Japan Cyrus. The reaction you had towards it was just pure emotion for sure bro. That was like the crowning achievement in gaming collecting right at that moment. At least you can say you finally achieved that goal after years of trying to do so bro. 8^) I also posted this explanation video up on the Neo-Geo thread for you Cyrus. I can understand people coming to the NeoGeo later on being like this. I got mine 2000 and over the next 10 years i bought the games i wanted before they all went insane. I also have a bootleg multicart for the AES which has worked fine for games i never bought. Totally understand what your saying as i haven't bought an original in the last 7 years (bought a 2nd aes as a back up). Great vid really enjoyed listening to it

With the 68000 wait state emulation, MAME's Neo Geo emulation is virtually indistinguishable from real hardware now. There used to be very minor glitches with Neo Turfmasters and one of the backgrounds in Garou, but even those are fixed now. The funny thing is that a PC connected to a CRT with GroovyMAME is more authentic than an original Neo system connected to an LCD.

Me too. But now I just think its better to get them on my switch. At 7.99 a game its so much better then spending hundreds for one game. Yes I know its not the same as owning the orginals but I just cant justify the prices they charge on ebay for single games.

If anyone wants a more affordable alternative that is still running the games on real hardware, the neo geo cd with an optical drive emulator mod is a great option these days. The neo geo cd is the same hardware except that it loads games from disks instead of cartridges, and has slow loading times as a result, however the optical drive emulator lets you load the games from an SD card instead, which gets rid of the load times, and the cost of a neo geo cd imported from japan and an ODE for it is about the same as just an AES, less if you have the skills to install the mod yourself.

A Neo Geo AES is kind of like a classic car - if you have real passion/nostalgia for the original hardware then it’s very rewarding. But it’s not really a “buy it just to try it” system.

Even though you said what you said I believe you still don't what NEO-GEO AES is. NEO-GEO is a different kind of breed.. A lot of people fail to mention what makes it so very powerful unlike the rest. NEO-GEO does not mix graphics and sound like other video game systems do on one single circuit board of a cartridge therefore NEO-GEO is like two cartridges in one. And because of this it's the only video game system in this whole world that makes a huge difference in graphics and sound. This is more than just another video game system to play PERIOD.

Great video. SNK has been my favorite game company since the 1990s. Have been a fan of the Neo Geo since I first played in the arcades in 1990. Settled for getting ports on the SNES and Playstation until I got my Neo CD system in 1998 from SNK of America when they were starting to clear them out. Built up a nice CD collection then picked up the Pocket Color in 1999. Finally got an AES in 2004. The prices for games had fallen drastically by then and got most of the games that I wanted on cartridge, dirt cheap. Then got an MVS 1-slot PCB around 2006 when I got a Jamma Super Gun. Today, sitting on a great collection and I feel sorry for folks who are just getting into collecting for all of the formats as the prices are all ridiculous. But, definitely not getting rid of my collection any time soon.

Interesting video and I’m sorry AES didn’t work out for you. I bought one in 2005 and consider it amongst my favourite systems. Some thoughts… No matter when you buy into the system you’re going to face high prices relative to the cost of other games released at the time. This was true 17 years ago and even more so today. However, some of the games, even at today’s high prices, represent good value for money. There’s huge mileage to be got from any of the King of Fighters or Real Bout Fatal Fury series for example. Samurai Shodown has tonnes of long term appeal as well. You can get these other ways of course but playing them via other systems just isn’t the same I believe. There is a certain enjoyment in physically owning original cartridges in great condition too. Having said all of that, there are clearly games outside any normal person’s budget. It’s frustrating. Moreover, the marketplace is flooded with conversions. In short, I love my system and it’s titles. They give me huge joy. I haven’t bought a new game in a year. I hope to add a new one to the collection at some point soon. I will savour it, whichever I choose.

Good points regarding the AES. Whoever wants to pay vast amounts of money on this console, is free to do it. However, from my point of view it's too expensive to worth the trouble. Some of the games (not all of them) were released on different consoles as stand alone versions or compilations, so there are way cheaper means to play those games. I had at one point an AES, and I've sold it for the same reasons, extremely expensive hardware and games, old and faulty hardware and at some point, after spending even more money on repairs and mods, it wasn't even an original AES anymore. So what was the point? So I went the other route, ports and emulation. It's cheaper, it looks great and it plays great.

I rewatched this the other night and forgot what a good video it really is. 5 months later after collecting for the MVS and looking at expensive cartridges it really has beat me down when I see the prices of some things. I'm still gonna collect, but nowhere near how I first started off wanting too. I really want to get a NeoGeo pocket color and it wouldn't be so bad if the games were cheaper but I was seeing prices for some of the games and it was just killing me. especially when I can emulate everything so easily and I bought an anbernic rg300x and it plays everything right at my hands anywhere and everywhere and the battery life in it is insaneeeeeee how long it lasts. here lately, emulation has just been king for me. I'm not gonna lie, I still like the idea of just buying repros and playing them when I can't find the cheaper real MVS carts, but definitely am feeling what you were talking about in this video much more now than 5 or 6 months ago. It's like i have to go through such a hassle to plug everything up and store all of this crap when I have pretty much everything either on bigbox emulation or my ps4/5.

Back in 1992, it was marketed as "the best" console on the market (24 bit) but the main issue was it's crazy price of $650 bucks, you could buy the Genesis, snes, gameboy amd game gear with less money than the neo geo aes, and it's library was not that great

I have a similar story with the Turbo Grafx 16. Bought a system and 3 games for $170 about 5 years ago. It was a pretty good deal. But it took a custom made cable just to get composite out of the console. To get RGB would require about a $200 investment and an everdrive was going to be another $175. It was just too much for a console I didn't have nostalgia for. I ended up trading it and the games separately, got good value for it, and never looked back. Sometimes a system just isn't for you.

Never was lucky enough to snag a original unit back in the day. Only ever saw one in a pawnshop in the late 90s and was a starving university student at the time. I was happy to emulate it on MAME for years. Grabbed a NEO GEO X, but it is just okay, not the finest quality. Picked up the mini and it was okay, video out could have been better. It was a better quality product than the X. My favorite way to play, is the NEO GEO Arcade Stick Pro. Officially branded, high quality product, with perfect emulation. They designed it hardware mod and hack friendly. I have the full library on it, unibios, and it looks perfect on my HD display. I am surprised it isn't talked about more. I guess it doesn't have the "street cred" of the original carts and console.

Was thinking about to collect all of these MVS games. But MVS is getting more expensive too. Too many sorrows..bootleg or not, open the cart and checking them, of course cleaning and so on...But finally I would have all of these games in my shelf not playing them because lot of them are not top games too. Additionaly not having the time I would like to have for playing them. So I just would have the carts in my shelf although I know I dont like every game. At least I just would spend a lot of money for all these games well knowing its just for the shelf and not for playing them. Because at the beginning I wanted to collect them. What you experienced is exactly why I decided back in the day to just not even try to get the Neo Geo. like many who were teenagers during the 90's I really wanted the system because the games it had caught my interest but those jacked up prices were a complete turn off with certain titles hitting $200 to $400 every time I just happened to see them. I was fine with playing Art of Fighting on the Genesis but the Sega Saturn and PS1 and other consoles that came after them are where I was finally able to play more NG games without spending hundreds and I really didn't care if most ports weren't perfect at the time. Thankfully with each of the current consoles people can buy NG games for cheap and with a proper emulator for pc and a modded original xbox people can play NG games without breaking the bank just for a single title. I also like the original NG hardware but with those prices it goes for and some games being even higher than what they were when they came out I'm never going to get one and I'll just stick with what's being made available today.

If I paid $200 for Burning Fight that would be the end for me even if the cart was perfect. I lusted after a Neo Geo as a kid too but it's even more prohibitively expensive than it ever has been. Collectors and RU-vid have pushed the price of most retro games past the point of what im willing to spend for old gamers like myself. The games are pretty shallow too all things considered because they were arcade games. They're meant for a quick thrill in an arcade and get boring real quick. Emulation is absolutely perfect for most systems and emulators offsr so much more than the original hardware ever can and that's good enough for me.

It's already been mentioned, but the mister is the best way to experience Neo-Geo IMO. The emulation is amazing, and for less than the cost of an AVS, you can play pretty much every console up to PSX/Saturn (hopefully soon!). Your reasoning was perfectly rational -- sure, you could grab a flashcart, but at that point you're already taking a step away from the NG and dumping another $500 into something you couldn't get the way you wanted it. Different strokes for different folks, I say!

I would love a physical NeoGeo unit, I’ve toyed with the idea of a CD unit, but the load times and lack of some of the later games puts me off. An AES and flash cart is too pricey, and a converted MVS doesn’t really appeal to me. A proper NeoGeo AES mini, with authentic sticks or clicky pads would be amazing, and if they included svideo or RGB output I’d be in heaven!

I have an Arcade 1up that I switch out with a raspberry Pi 4, and a PC to play games on it, and when playing Arcade games, feels just as good as the originals. hence why I sold my NeoGeo MVS. I got the same feeling playing on real hardware vs. emulation. some people can tell the difference. I am one of those people, but as I get older, it doesnt matter anymore.

4:55 That's one of the reasons I don't get those flashcarts, putting all your eggs in one basket and at that high price. Also, heard they fry your system. 7:57 I want to get Burning Fight. 10:24 The most I spent on a game was $735.62. 17:05 It's not about getting them all, just the ones you want. Looking at my list of games that I'd really like to get, I'm down to 7 more. I just got one recently "Cyber Lip". So grand total of 15 games I'd like for the system. (Also, there is the Neo Geo CD option, which has games cheap, for the most part. Just avoid most of the fighting games, loading too long.)

I have many good emulation setups, like a Raspberry Pi400 with RGB-Pi hooked on a CRT, but real Neo hardware is still better. I'm very sensitive to input lag, and when I play emulated I can always feel the timing is slightly off, especially with games like Neo Turf Masters, one of my favorite titles ever. So I have an MVS cab and I collect MVS carts. But people can go the real hardware route even cheaper, with a simple 1 slot MVS board (there's a million of them), a decent supergun, a CRT, and the 161-in-1 banana cart. And it'll be objectively better than AES: for example, the MVS RGB video output is stellar (as any other arcade board, for that matter). I've never tried MISTer, so I can't say if the input lag is an issue on that too, but it's wonderful to play on original hardware... it just doesn't have to be AES. Need a game that's not on the chinese 161-in-1 cart? Buy a bootleg on Aliexpress. The only good thing about owning an AES is having on a shelf all those beautiful carts with colorful boxes, manuals and labels - if you're rich, or insane enough to spend all your money on this hobby.

Yeah, I had considered at 1 time getting an AES but within the span of about ohhhh 20 minutes I realized that it's a mistake lol the games are just too expensive but! I bought a CMVS and have been buying legit carts when I can and repro carts for the really expensive games. Honestly, I always loved the idea of playing on legit carts that came from the Arcades where people invested their time and energy into them. I also too have that fear of What happens if my console dies on me? Idk anything about fixing them....I considered buying a 2nd CMVS console and just laying it up JUST IN CASE! I don't play on the one I have heavily so I'm hoping it'll last me a long time. I'm 32 now and collecting for the MVS has brought back my passion for gaming and collecting. i don't mind emulation at all! I personally think this is a good video...but maybe you shoulda thought a little harder before buying an AES haha :P

I suspect the NeoGeo stuff will eventually come down in prices but by how much, idk...Honestly, I never even hear people talk about a NeoGeo unless you know what 1 is and the games for it etc. heck, I didn't even know what 1 was until I was like 16? 17? somewhere along there haha

get a consolized MVS with a multicart, or if willing to spend, a NeoSD cart. You can get a decent arcade stick too. I see you talk about the NeoSD, it is really a solid piece of hardware. And it is compatible with everithing, don't believe those rumors. I use it with a japanese AES, and a custom arcade stick. Better yet, get a MisterFPGA, it's hardware emulation and I hear Neo Geo is just like the real deal. HDMI out. No flashcarts.

I love the games the Neo Geo has, but it was never worth it for me to go after it, in any meaningful way. This is why I just decided to buy them digitally on the Nintendo Switch. Yeah you could emulate them, but the form factor, amount of different controllers you can use, and even those mini arcade cabinets for $70 you can get on etsy to slide the Switch tablet into; give me a level of satisfaction that you can't get on emulation and costs waaaaayy less (legitimately) than going after the original hardware and carts (and the Switch can hook up to a TV and is a handheld).

I imported a Japanese AES about 7 years ago and I've built up a library of 32 carts - Mostly VS fighting games (which is why I really wanted the system to begin with). Personally, I brought mine because I already had a Neo Geo cd, but I was unhappy with the loading times for the VS fighting games in particular (especially the later releases). Anyway, my AES games balance out my CD collection perfectly. I also don't have any major issues with the standard Neo Geo joysticks - I agree that the buttons could be better, but they are solid and work well (they are somewhat noisy though). That said, I completely understand your position. The Neo Geo is an easy system to emulate and it's games are available across all major platforms. There isn't any reason to buy original hardware if you just want to play the games, other than perhaps wanting to play them on original hardware. I generally recommend emulating all 16-bit systems these days, as collecting retro systems is getting really expensive. Regarding the other problems you experienced, I'm fortunate to live in the UK, so all of my TV's have support for SCART. This means I get a great image from my AES (or NGCD) on any of the CRTs or LCDs in my household via a SCART lead. The other major issue, namely price, I reduced by collecting Japanese carts (I prefer them anyway - and the US packaging is inferior imo). The price of American or European carts is ridiculous, when you realise that apart from the labels, they are IDENTICAL (and have no region lockout). That said, I'm glad I picked up most of my carts years ago, when there were many bargains to be found. I did a LOT of research before I started collecting for AES (already owning the CD system helped), but it's not something I'd really recommend, despite how happy I am with my own collection.

The whole console and the games are overpriced for this system, I myself have always wanted to own one but with Emulation on the rise, you can pretty much play any of the games that have ever been released for the neo geo AES under the sun. And hey if your not happy with the console as you’ve mentioned it’s better to move on, Neo Geo collecting is insane to try to hunt down some of the most rarest games, I do believe that retro gaming is more on the rise with certain companies making micro consoles nowadays, what some of these companies should do is just rerelease the hardware that was released from back in the day and with all the retro gaming on the rise I believe the prices will come down for certain collector markets such as the neo geo. This is a good video, thanks for uploading 👍🍻

I honestly feel exactly the same about the NEOGEO. Theres actually one local to me I could grab, and I haven't grabbed it due to talking to you about it over the years. I know what I would be like, I would want the games, and the original controllers. And the games are just brutal to find :( Absolutely I 100% agree that the emulation is the primary reason that I use to stay away from it. The emulation is 99.999999999% there, and with the right hardware, say a MiSTER or something similar, you can basically have the experience without all the pain. Part of me still longs to just collect it, even if I know it's not the best way to play it. But I know that its just going to negatively affect the other things I want to collect as well. A NEOGEO is not for me. Emulation is fine.
