Not "any" kid, but specifically the timid ones that hate violence. Other kids would be excited to fight in a giant robot, and would never back down the opportunity to pilot it, until they experience the horrors first hand.

Some kids might even be completely fine with continuing to pilot the horrifying mecha... After all, not all kids are the same, some got enough guts to survive as child soldiers, while others wouldnt be able to prosper outside of peaceful areas.

You're absolutely right. People do not take into account that he's a 14-year old boy with esteem issues. Most children (plus adults) in real life are not going to react well to receiving a task to save the world when that means they have to fight and possibly get killed in battle. But then of course, Shinji was their only choice aside from an injured Rei at that time, still a screwed up situation along with everything else in the series

I like to think I'd happily do it as I'd love to pilot something like that but we'll being the last hope would be terrifying

I'm sorry man respectfully I disagree. But please note I know it's because I'm an old head. But you have to ubderstand the attachemnt we all have to this show. Evangellion was the first anime I ever watched. Stumbled across it by accident. One late night.I was like 10 at the time. On sbs or abc in Australia in the late 90s. I had no idea what the fuck was going on. Obviously. But because I'd never seen anything like it. from animation I was just captivated. Anything other than the orrignal dub. Is fucking jarring to me. I cannot get into it cause I cannot get past. That's not shinjis voice. I'm sure if I didn't have my attachment to the orriginal the new one would be fine. I'm sure there's probably things that are better about thus dub. But nostalgia is a painful heartstring to tug on, is all I'm saying.

Funnily enough the show discussed how fans would react to Shinji through asukas relationship with him, they like her would hate and loathe him for being too relatable, no one likes it when someone points out their own flaws.

you misunderstand the whole point of eva, only shinji could pilot it, the soul of yui could ONLY synchronize with shinji and rei, and with the state of rei tokyo 3 would've been doomed if she piloted it

not if you were the mentally vulnerable age shinji is, most teens are psychological messes and being confronted with a terrifying task like saving the world with a robot where you can feel all the pain it does would probably worsen their mental state

i would be terrified i would have to fight some creature that i know nothing about alone in a giant robot that i dont understand how to use and my life would be in danger

gendo is not only an asshole but an big idiot. Spoiler for the entire show. He could have trained shinji since he was a little child, but he sends him away, its not like his wife sacrificed her life so shinji can become an eva-pilot, oh wait she did. What Gendo does instead, is sending his son away, the only possible eva-pilot at this point, clones his wife, forces her to pilot an eva and only sends for his son after 10 years, when his cloned wife is injured and an angel is knocking on humanities door. And they only thing this whole stunt worked out fine, is because yue really liked their son and protected him.
