During the investigation of the incident, 28-year-old Dipendra Rai, who lives in the same house, was taken into custody. He had reached the police station to inform them about the murder but the police arrested him after noticing blood on his shoes and clothes. However, Rai was released after it was revealed in a police investigation that he had no involvement in the killing. Police suspect that the incident occurred on 15th September 2023 late at night. Police then searched the CCTV footage for clues and suspected a man to be involved in the murder. Trained police dogs and specialized teams were mobilized to investigate the incident. With the assistance of CCTV footage, the police successfully located and arrested the suspect, who had fled the crime scene brandishing a Khukuri. The accused has been identified as Sindhupalchok resident, Sanjay Bhandari who is Deaf. During investigation it was found that Bhandari had a prior altercation with Nabin Rai after being struck by a motorcycle driven by Rai a few days ago. Sanjay reached the saw mill where Nabin used to live. After some dispute, he took out the khukuri from his bag and killed him. This dispute eventually escalated, leading to the tragic incident where Rai and three others lost their lives. He then killed the 3 other people who lived downstairs for the fear of being caught. Following the quadruple homicide, the accused, Bhandari, sought refuge in Pepsicola, at a friend's residence. When he found the main gate locked at night, he resorted to climbing a tree to gain entry into the compound. However, upon not finding his friend there, he proceeded to another house. After his arrest, he wrote in English, “I Killed Four People” on a piece of paper. The police then obtained his statement with the assistance of an interpreter.
