I already think he has reached the status as one of the best players not to be WC, winning two back-to-back candidates. Will be great to see what happens in the next circuit.
I don't see the point of dedicating time to the Candidates if Magnus continues to refuse to play. WCC will only mean something when one of the rising stars bring him out of classical chess retirement.
Do you think winning the WCC offers nothing if the best player doesn’t compete for it? That the only purpose of it is to crown the best player? I honestly can’t understand that’s. No other sport views world championships as useless if the no. 1 isn’t competing. Would you say the same about winning Olympic gold medals? Many of those are won with the world no.1 being injured or not participating for other reasons. So those people who won in the field that is competing shouldn’t feel accomplished? Seems absurd and can only come from an uncompetitive person.
@@pookz3067 Yes, I do think that. It's meaningless. If nepo suddenly had a rating surge and started playing like stockfish then yeah sure. Otherwise you are champion because the #1 guy got bored. That's a stupid amount of work (WCC) for such an empty result.
@@derekluna7700world champion is a TITLE, not a status. Max Euwe was never the best player, but he played the best in 1935 and he deserved to be World Champion because of it.
I don't think he is going to qualify for a candidate 2026. Maybe some young Russian GM which is not likely either as Russia is banned from fide. He had a great legacy as one of the great chess players ).
