Barbara Gittings, ceramicist, makes Nerikomi bottles in her workshop.
Nerikomi is a contemporary Japanese term. The name derives from the traditional technique of creating patterns with coloured clay.
Barbara demonstrates in the video how slabs of clays coloured with stains or oxides, are stacked, folded, pressed into logs, sliced, and arranged to form a vessel.
Original music composed and performed by Donna McKevitt.

I keep watching this over and over... I love the nerikomi, but the structures of your bottles seem so complex. I'd love to see how you assemble them. They are so so beautiful!

I love how much the simple yet complex forms (Distorted rectangle and a tube, basically) compliment the nerikomi, It puts me in mind of those ancient, beautiful indigo-dyed kimonos from Japan. Even better, the ones that have been patched and worn out. Just fascinating work. Beautifully done.

Son yakma işlemi yanlış oldu. Onca çalışmayı berbat etti. Daha profesyonel bir yöntem tercih edilebilirdi.

Hi Barbara! Your work is so inspiring to me as I begin my explorations with porcelain. Would you say you work with the porcelain in a state that's between hard and soft slab construction? I know for stoneware there are great benefits to waiting for leather hardness before slab construction, but is it different for porcelain? Do you ever construct with hard slab porcelain or always in this sort of hard tofu state? also, very intrigued by the white vinegar in the background, is that what you're sponging onto the clay for cleanup?
