Schumann wrote the Piano Quintet op.44 in 1842. It was first performed at the Gewandhaus Leipzig by Clara and a string quartet by members of the Gewandhausorchester.
It seems to have been this work that convinced Clara's father to offer Schumann to put their hostilities behind them and to try a fresh start.
