This chemistry video tutorial explains how to use the nernst equation to calculate the cell potential of a redox reaction under non standard conditions. This video is very useful for students taking ap chem. It contains plenty of examples and practice problems with step by step solutions. This tutorial explains how to find n and how to use le chatelier's principle to determine the cell potential is going to increase or decrease when the concentration of the reactants and products changes. This lesson also contain examples of calculating the pH of a redox reaction given cell potential and how to find the unknown concentration of a reactant or product ion dissolved in the aqueous phase by finding the reaction quotient Q. This video tutorial also mentions how to derive the nernst equation from delta G and how to change the natural log function into log Q using the change of base formula. This video provides 2 versions of the nernst equation one of which is useful when given a temperature other than 25C or 298K.

Hey I just wanted to thank you for what you do. Your gen chem 1 review video saved my ass last semester (I got a 97) and I know I wouldn't have been able to do it without that video. I've been watching a ton of your other videos this whole week to study for my gen chem 2 final tomorrow. The way you explain things makes so much sense. I even noticed there's a difference in the way I approach problems now. Seriously thank you so much for this; you're amazing.

3:34, when you say when products go up, and it shifts to the left, making E cell more negative, how come whenever you have a product-favored reaction, delta g is negative, but E cell is positive? I'm really confused. When you're describing the product-reactant relationships with the E cell, do you mean E naught or nonstandard E? Thank you.
@ruu406
@ruu406 2 года назад
Because delta g is equal to (-nF*delta E). Delta E is the non standard E of oxidator minus reductor. When it's more than 0 then delta G is less than zero. When that happens, the reaction runs spontaneously. The reactions that don't are electrolytic . Don't know if u still need this but yea

@The Organic Chemistry Tutor: E *can* equal E0 even when concentrations of participating reactants/products aren't all 1 M, right? Only the RATIO of concentrations of products to reactants (raised to the powers of their stoichiometric coefficients) must equal 1, ergo Q must equal 1. Perhaps, the definition of *standard* cell potential is incomplete and ought to be altered. Would appreciate a reply as I have an exam coming up.....
