The original NES is a must-have retro console, with many of Nintendo's most popular franchises starting out on the 8 bit system. Tim Worthington's NES RGB mod has been the gold standard for getting the best quality analog video from the NES, but it required drilling holes into the console for new AV connectors. As someone who has seen a few of your videos now, this one's production quality seems ever improving and it is great. The fast forwarded PCB work is super entertaining, with the retro soundtrack really just adding a ton. I didn't notice the volume issue as much as the other commentator but I'm sure to each is own setup is a factor. Keep up the good work!!

Yo, the LED is supposed to be a RGB common cathode LED. You have one cathode and the 3 others are for each color. I do that because I had people who wanted other colors than red/green bi-color CC led. I think I'll just stop using them and only send bicolor ones.

Thanks for clearing that up. I’m used to just a standard LED with one cathode/anode so I couldn’t figure out how to wire it up properly. And thanks again for making this kit, it’s the perfect solution for the NESRGB!

It would be awesome to have before/after Castlevania picture/sound quality for reference. I have no idea how much better it is, unfortunately though I believe you that it is. :)

At some point I should get some video capture equipment for exactly this purpose. The difference is significant but the best way to demonstrate that would be with some still images or a few frames a video

What I often miss in your videos and especially in this one, is a short shot of the finished build. Whenever you add new connectors of like in this case, mod something without cutting, I'd like to see how it looks assembled. I'm sure I'm not the only one, but the few videos I've seen so far from you omit that part. Otherwise good job, the soldering sections have a soothing quality :-)

The hd retrovision genesis model 2 component cables will work nicely

There is an optional module that gives you component video but you will have to make custom cables or find non-compliant Genesis cables with no components inside.

But does it also output in stereo? Because the motherboard outputs stereo but nintendo mixed it down to mono trough wires, stereo gives a wider sound,but it can be sounding naked, so you can mix it partially or totally back to mono with external cables if you want that , Thanks alot.

Normally I do mono on both speakers (dual mono), but I’m pretty sure that you can wire things up differently to get stereo as you are describing

What people call “stereo” isn’t actually stereo. The NES combined two different kinds of internal audio sources that are easy enough to keep separate as different channels but doing so is not exactly “stereo.” ;) There is no stereo effect though separating them lets you dedicate speakers to one or the other which might give you slightly more fidelity.

Very odd question but if i am using a PAL NES with the Crystal, PPU and CPU from a Famicom, i'd have to bridge Jumper 5? as it's technically an American NES at this point right? Thanks for the clear tutorials!

Yes, if you are using a Famicom cpu ppu and clock then it’s technically an ntsc console now. You should bridge jumper 5

Does the expansion audio mod you did work with the standard NESRGB Installation using the din and audio jack that comes with the kit?

I wonder why people don't use the sega saturn video output, it allows composite, s-video, and rgb as well, I didn't know the genesis connecter does s-video. and maybe that RF channel switch can be used to toggle between rgb and component.

That’s a good question, I’m not sure why the Saturn connector is not more widely used. One thing I know for sure is that the Genesis connector is very easy to find- maybe that is not the case with the Saturn connector?

I’m not sure if the developer of the board is still making it. But I believe it is open source so technically you could purchase the PCB and make one on your own

Yes, you can add the no cut power board and it will work. I did not only because I don’t have an NESRGB to install on the opentendo, at least not yet

Hey, I'm looking to up my solder kit and looking to get better at desoldering. What solder stations do you reccomend and what desolder tools do you recommend? Any 3 in 1 stations (solder, desolder, and heat gun/continuity checker)? Thank you!

The ksger T12 is a good temperature controlled soldering station, and personally I use a Hakko fx-888d soldering iron. Unfortunately with desoldering guns there really isn’t a good cheap option. I use the Hakko FR301 and it is fantastic. Lastly I have a WEP 858d hot air gun

I have a small question about this part here 20:20. It’s instructed to remove the three 75ohms resisters because they’re already built into a scart cable. I’m going to be using a HD Retrovision Genesis cable instead. So I’m guessing I don’t remove them? Thank you for the videos.

Actually you would also need to remove them if you’re using it with hd retro component cables

Hi, I just did installed nesrgb (NTSC NES), but picture is a little bit dark on my PAL monitor. I'm using GameCube cable, could it be the reason?

It’s possible, but I’m not entirely sure why it would be dark like that. Do you have another SCART cable you can use?

All those things you showed me gave me relief to know I don't need to make any cuts to my custom painted NES. On top of that, the extra audio channel is great! However, I bought the Dracula's Curse game that has the Japanese soundtrack but in English. So yeah, even though I love the Castlevania 3 soundtrack, I want to play the game in English. So I bought the thing from another country. I haven't tested it yet but it said its supposed to include the soundtrack from the japanese version. I'll let you know when I do test it. Not ready yet. However knowing you can install extra sound, would other NES games have that extra sound? I think Legend of Zelda has more sound in its soundtrack from the Japanese version. Will the American NES produce that extra sound thanks to the mod you did for extra sound channels?

Yes once you do that modification you will be able to hear the extra sound channels just like you would in a Japanese console

@@LIRetroGaming I went to the link to see the kit needed to install the 9-pin thing to your nes. The video on that site showed how hard it is to plug it into that thing because the walls on the case impede the plug to go all the way in. So what did you do about that? Did you have to trim some of the rubber parts of the plug to make it fit? Or was it able to fit just fine without doing anything?

Do you have basically all of the nes roms on this console? Where are the roms stored? Is it a custom cartridge that contains them all on a rom chip?

No, the console does not have any roms. You need to use original Nintendo cartridges, or a flash cart like the everdrive

that rf module is really hard to unsolder. do not attempt this with a low wattage iron. You're going to rip those vias out.

I have a wireless 8bitdo board and i replaced the boards on the controllers with that wireless one. I am wondering if the reset key combo would work on those controllers too

It does work but for some reason i am getting a noise “band” which looks like noisy pixels scrolling from bottom to top of the screen after the nesrgb mod and signal via quality packapunch rgb scart. I know the issue isn’t in the cabling so i wondered about psu. My nes came modded with dc psu mod. I am wondering now, since it lacks ground, am I in trouble, and should I ground the chassis to avoid noise??

I wonder why they didn't go with DVI, since they have an RGB signal that's likely in binary format at some point.

I think it’s because most people are using set ups that are centered around either component video or RGB video. At least there are external converters that can give you DVI output

@@LIRetroGaming I've been thinking about the coming shortage of NES CPUs and PPUs, and it occurred to me that the PPU could be replaced by a chip that outputs DVI, since its internals are well known and already modeled pretty well in FPGA. I need to read more about the APU output, but assuming that it comes out of the CPU die in a digital format, it would be easy to combine it with the DVI to get a clean and lag-less HDMI output. The CPU could just use a bridge that implements the unique functions: APU, DMA, and has a couple registers for the controllers, then you can slap a 6502 on top of it.

This mod doesn’t output hdmi directly, you need to connect the RGB to a device like an open source scan converter to get hdmi. That configuration has video and audio though

Does literally everything about giving 8bit consoles better video quality is desoldering the graphics chip? couldn't there be cheaper and simpler method so other things like a simple plug n play circuit board that's stuck with composite video can at least receive s video or better?

Taking apart an NES may be the easiest thing in the world....but how many of you have a 1.5" scar on your big toe from that heat shield gliding through flesh at 4 in the morning???..... I'm a special kind of dumb sometimes haha
