Nest Collapse! Family Accounted For - Decorah Eagles DNF, Mr North, DN17 & DN18 (6/15)

Over the course of the morning today, you can see the nest slowly starting to shift and tilt, until it suddenly just tips over for a full collapse.
I included clips to show that each eagle/eaglet is safe and accounted for post-collapse. Thank goodness these babies are flighted/fledged!! (Slow-motion recap included as well.)

Thank goodness they aren't babies! They will be just fine and the parents will still feed them like normal just in a different place!

I'm glad the chicks have already fledged before this took place, very happy this whole family is safe. I'm so glad the one chick that landed on the ground is unharmed. Probably a little shaken but doing very well.

My goodness!so glad they in a way instinctively reacted in time to get away in time before it fully fell and glad the babies were able to at least fly away to safety as well.

Thankfully, they have many trees surrounding them to choose from, so I don't think safe perches will be a concern. I'm so, so glad the babies were already flighted/fledged when this happened!

What will happen for this Eagle family next season? Will they take the camera down? Will they build a new nest? This is worrisome but I’m so glad the babies and the family were fine ❤

All good questions that we just don't know the answers to for certain. The eagles will likely rebuild here or very nearby. As for the cam - I'm sure they'll do their best to relocate the cam if need be, but again - we'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds. But yes - thank goodness everyone is okay!

I was concerned about this nest back before there were eggs. The size of the nest along with it being so far out on the limbs had me worried what might happen if there was heavy wet snow and strong winds. You could often hear one of the limbs creaking anytime there were strong winds. Just very glad both eaglets fledged before this happened

Thanks for keeping us posted. There has been a lot of rain in that region in the last week so happy that they fledged last week. I don’t know if that’s 17 or 18 on the ground hopefully he or she can still fly. At least you can see the wings working. 🐥🐥🙏❤

I've already seen the parents feeding the eaglets. I think we're going to be just fine here, but yes - that had to be so startling! Poor things.

Hi Whimsy❤️🙏🦅🦅🤞🏼. I act did go and see the Decorah nest tilting and then fell. One of the DN Eaglets did fly away but the other (to me) looked like it was going down as the tree was going down too but it was off the tree. I’m really hoping that the Eaglet that didn’t look like it flew but tried to is alright and accounted for and also safe too. I did see one at the tree on a limb where it looked like the nest was. I had a terrible gut feeling when the heavy rains came on and on and on that this was gonna happen. This just breaks my heart and I’m honestly whining to believe it all has to be from when we had that solar eclipse cause even things and people were weird after that at Dialysis too where I live here in Florida. Can you please keep us all posted when you get word that the other Eaglet and also parents too are all alright? Seems like quite a few nests collapsed this season 😢 Thankfully no one was hurt or injured. The tree looked dead to me.

The FOLFAN & Redding trees are getting brittle & dying too. Lots of rebuilding in the future for our eagles, I believe.

Those little birds that are flying around the nest probably had their own nest within the nest. Hope everything living under the nest is okay, though I’m guessing it probably isn’t. Seems human assistance-built nests are pretty fallible in Iowa.

All the wind and rain this spring certainly didn't help, but the tree was quite aged as well, so this was essentially inevitable. Thank goodness it held out as long as it did! What happens now is a day0by-day. The family is doing very well. Still lots of trees around to perch on safely & the eaglets are flighted & feeding fine. As for next season - we'll just have to wait and see what mom and dad have in store for us. Hopefully they'll rebuild very nearby & we'll still have a cam to watch it all.
