Just a heads up for when the Unifi Protect doorbells (16-24V) arrive in the U.K. I imported one from the US and hooked it up to the same transformer used in this video and it fried the doorbell. Managed to RMA it and get a replacement, but tested the voltage coming from the transformer the second time around .. 28V. Bought another one, same issue. I think the Nest must have higher tolerance of voltage. Managed to get the Unifi doorbell working by hooking it up to the 24V and 8V outputs on the transformer (measures 16.0V with multimeter). Problem is now that I’m struggling to find a 16V chime. My 24V chime is completely unresponsive to the 16V input.

The wired Nest doorbells (as well as wired Ring doorbells) are great products. HOWEVER, they don't tell you upfront that these wired doorbells all have an internal non-user-serviceable battery. IF you will be using the doorbell with a mechanical chime, just be aware that at some point, the battery inside will fail. The internal battery on these units are used to provide temporary voltage to the doorbell unit when a mechanical chime is used. When someone presses the doorbell button, power is temporarily routed away from the doorbell to the chime inside the house. The battery keeps the doorbell powered for the 1-2 seconds while this happens. Over time, this small battery will be unable to deal with the voltage drop and your doorbell will lose power and reboot itself. If you don't rely on a mechanical chime or if you use the Ring wireless chime, than it won't be an issue. If you do use a mechanical chime, depending on your environment (which includes usage rate, weather, temperature, etc.), the doorbell will stop function properly at some point in time. For most users, it seems to be somewhere between 1-3 years.

In Australia you can’t bring single sleeved bell wire into the consumer unit. It must be double insulated all the way to the ELV terminals on the transformer! If you can’t achieve this then you must mount the transformer external to the consumer unit

Protek BT8-24 din rail transformer is good. It has 8, 16 and 24v output, the Nest Hello works ok at 16v and the original chime will go up to 16v too, generally 8-16v, so can reuse that. I did try 12v on a different transformer in the past when Google lowered the requirement, but found it wouldn’t work. 16v was good though.

I had the bg transformer running my Ring inside the CU, but it uses up two spaces and bell wire inside just seemed a bit dubious with all the 240v stuff. @@jam99 Actually, you've probably hit the nail on the head, future incompetence! This was exactly how I saw a possible problem. Our excellent man here did a great job, but in using the existing (not best-quality) bell-wire, & drawing that into the C.U. enclosure , (at least it was plastic!...) behind the existing,- & not wired by him cabling, it could be a trap for some less competent installer making further alterations in the future. The insulation on this type of single-conductor, hard-drawn copper bell-wire is not that good, & is easily nicked. Notwithstanding this, the following from the 18th Edition does make a valid point: 414.4.1 (ii) also 414.4.2 (iii). 528.1 (i) sums it up succinctly; "Every cable or conductor is (shall be) insulated to the highest voltage present"

I am the opposite way... i prefer olde worlde hard wired stuff... My background in telecomms helps. All you're trying to do is send a signal to several different devices at once. relays. Relays relays relays. And the american penchant for 24v makes sense with doorbells. 24v will work thru a set of corroded contacts that uk standards of 6 or 8v would ignore. Ours is genuinely running at 36v AC because I had an old transformer, some relays that would work... and NOTHING perturbs it. And it's still low enough not to be dangerous, even if you chew a cable

Just a comment regarding secondary circuit low voltage wiring. I used too work in the office equipment Industry and was a safety evaluation engineer. Part of safety standard requirements was that primary and secondary wiring should be kept separated from each other unless the insulation standard of the secondary circuit wiring was the same as the primary circuit wiring (same voltage rating). Is the insulation standard of bell wiring the same as primary (mains) wiring ?. I'm not sure what the requirements are in this instance for this type of installation for house wiring. However to my mind if it is not of the same standard (insulation gauge/insulation grade then the two circuits should be isolated from each other for safety.

The problem with all of these is they rely on a good WiFi signal outside. In a more modern build with foil insulation everywhere they just don't work. If you are doing a new build run a cat5e to the door bell position so you can get a real video door bell.

They also get hot as hell and the same as ring will fail when they are just about out of warranty.

Worry about type rating off different manufacturer breakers, but then happy to run bell wire SELV into a consumer unit, don't get it.

Low-voltage term is common, as in it is the conductor that is common for the front door push, chime and potentially back door push. What is this “Zero” you speak of?

Shame, those old solenoid 2 tone chimes are becoming rarer and rarer, all you get these days is hideous synthetic chimes. It was nice to see a real bell fitted here, but it didnt sound very nice.

Really love your work but this, I'm surprised. You haven't done anything to address the band 1 and band 2 ratings for the cables within the consumer unit. That bell wire should have been oversleeved to increase its installation rating and ensure the low voltage does not become present in the extra low voltage cabling.
