Multiple copperheads found in Brazoria County Texas under corrugated aluminum. Southern Copperheads (agkistrodon contortrix contortrix ) are common pit vipers over much of the Southeastern United States.
They're practically invisible when laying in dry leaves and often go unnoticed. One of the reasons they adapt so well to human presence.
Adults are around usually two to two and a half feet long (50-95 cm) And juveniles look very similar. Newborns will lose their opaque appearance after their first shed in a few days. Southern copperheads are ovoviviparous which means eggs incubate inside the mother's body and babies are born live. Juveniles have an alluring yellow tail they use to entice frogs and lizards over for dinner.
Copperheads first line of defense is their camouflage and usually freeze when annoying humans come around, But if you push your luck, they'll tag you. Copperhead bites are seldom fatal due to the small dose of venom injected. Here are a few safety precautions that should prevent you from ever getting bitten.
1. Be careful where you put your hands and bare feet.
2. Never lick a copperhead on it's mouth.
3 And NEVER stick one up your nose... they hate that.

Love your video. We live in the foothills of Appalachian mountains in NC. We have witnessed many copperheads as roadkill on our road but none on our property till last week. My feral cat had a copperhead cornered on our sidewalk. He was "hell-bent" on killing it himself I kept him at bay (the cat), with my leg and the snake in place with my walking stick till my husband could assist. This snake had a green tip tail and now I know it was a juvenile from your video. It was a beautiful snake however, I'm cleaning out the woodpile to get rid of a possible home for these snakes!

We have copperheads all over Ohio. Very very very hard to see. Be careful around trees. They blend in with branches. They also blend in with leaves on the ground in the fall. You can tell if ones around because most up here release a smell that smells like cucumbers

Aside from common sense, how does a person find out that sticking a copperhead up your nose is a bad idea? Better question is: Why would someone think that such a thing seems like a practical idea? I will wholeheartedly take your advice and not stick one up my nose, even though I likely would never had done such a thing. lol. great info.

Dude, you're Pecos Hank! I heard your voiceover, then your guitar work, and did a double take. I support you under another handle on Patreon. My mom witnessed a black rat snake laying eggs in her yard this morning under some netting she uses to keep deer away from her plants - like 15 eggs. I was just doing some research, fell into a RU-vid black hole and found this video. Apparently, people buy these rat snakes for $50-$80. Do you know if she can sell the eggs to a local specialty pet-store? Sorry in advance if its a dumb question, we're worried about raccoons getting them more than making a buck off of them - but making a buck isn't a bad thing either!
@stemnozzel542
@stemnozzel542 6 лет назад
Hank, bad news. My mom, who lives in a big Midwestern city, called a few of the biggest reptile pet specialty stores and they would not take the eggs. My mom, well - shes a mom. She was scared to pick them up or move them, and it looks like raccoons got the entire clutch (all gone). Sad, there were 15-20 eggs. I live 400 miles away, or else I would have incubated them per your guidance. That would have been a very cool video to watch them hatch! I'm not a reptile guy, I would have let them go to eat mice. But, I am a big-time science guy with an alphabet soup of letters after my name - and knowing the time within a 2-3 hrs of when these eggs were laid means this could have been timed down to a day or two. Hank, can I just end by saying I am a big fan and supporter. I love your storm videos, and find you to be a unique, interesting personality who makes life more fascinating.

@WildSnakes

Fatalities from copperhead bites are rare. those that do perish probably succumbed to anaphylactic shock versus the toxic reaction. Copperheads are the least venomous snake of the vipers here in the states. But I'm not lining up to get bit either... Well, maybe I am...
@AtarahDerek
@AtarahDerek 9 лет назад
A copperhead bite will definitely ruin your weekend and can cause permanent loss of dexterity in the affected limb. But unless you have a pre-existing medical condition that can be exacerbated by the venom (including an allergy to venom), or you are very, very small (like a toddler), a single copperhead bite cannot kill you.
@kickazz9473

ray lowery I live in Tennessee if I remeber correctly. There are only 2 reported deaths by copperheads since records have been kept. Of all the posioness snakes in the states. I would rather be bitten by a copperhead than any other. Although I do not want to be bit by any snake. lol

Dear Wild Snakes, First, please don’t be mad at me for my question and beliefs. Okies? Now. What do you do with those beautiful skinned nasty attitude Copperheads? While I do know that certain snakes are incredibly beneficial on a property, I have no use nor need for a pair of hypodermic needles going into my skin injecting me with venom.
