My friend, you forgot to mention that one of the main features that differentiate the Nest x Yale and August is that auto-unlock feature with geofencing, it will unlock the door when you get 2OO meters from the lock.
Good point, that is the only feature that made me get Yale August vs. Nest. I have Nest thermostats and Nest cams and am very pleased with them, but the auto-unlock was the difference.
It surprises me that Google would not bother to add such a useful feature. It does not even require a redesign of the product, just a little update to the nest app.
Great review, do you know if there is anyway to connect a wireless keyfob to it so I can open the door as I walk up to it? Using any modules etc? Im hoping its possible with z-wave somehow
thanks man! I think you answered all my questions!!! The only thing I'm wondering which you didn't know at the time of this video is whether to this will be compatiable with the new Matter/Chip standard which i'm sure at the moment no one knows but given the brand it probably will be.
Hello excellent video!! I was just wondering, which lock will unlock as I approach the door and which lock can I unlock or lock with my iPhone and will I be able to unlock or lock with my Google Hub Max?? Thank you an thank you for your timely response
Thanks for the 1yr update, it answered all my questions except one. What happens when/if the electronics fail and it no longer moves the bolt? Are you forced to kick in the door or break glass to gain entry?
Hell Thank you for video. We have the same door. What happens is someone breaks your glass and opens it from inside? Any security for that right now we have a key on both sides Thanks again
I would worry about a fire or some type of urgency to exit your house and having to find the key first. Just a thought though. I’ve had the Nest Yale lock on my front door for about 3 months, and so far I really like it.
Great presentation! I have encountered an issue of Nest x Yale lock with battery drainage even after replacing legitimate all four AA batteries, it turned low battery after two rounds of locking & unlocking within three days without any rain. Your advices?
The only problem I’ve had with this product is the message I get from time to time that says “door was unable to lock.” Sometimes that’s true, sometimes it’s not. I blame the guy who installed it because he really messed up the lock on the door jam, but it’s still frustrating when I’ve left my house and I get that message hours later.
I recently got a low battery notice for my nest door lock. I changed the batteries as instructed. I tested the batteries I removed and the batteries all tested as good. Do you know why the lock would say the batteries need to be replaced when the batteries are still good.
Yea right. The Nest is the best lock out here. Not sure what features you're talking about, but you'll be hard pressed to find any legitimate tech review saying otherwise.
Problem with the auto lock feature and remote lock is that the deadbolt needs to be perfectly aligned with the corresponding hole. Doesn't work with my door because of the weatherstripping, you need to pull the door against the weatherstripping in order for that to work, otherwise the motor will try a couple times and stop, leaving the door unlocked.
This is a common issue. The solution is simple - realign the strike plate hole with the deadbolt. If the difference is very small and the screw holes overlap, use longer screws
I have this same lock and i had to factory reset the lock 3 times because after setting the pin code a hour later ill put the code in and it will tell me its wrong, like im putting in the wrong code. Why would that happen?
Is there a way to unlock this lock from the outside without using the keypad or a phone? I rarely have a phone on me and I don't carry a 9v battery in the even the batteries die. If there's no redundant, analog exterior release I'm not interested.
What about fingerprints on the lock. Do they show up easily? I guess the plus is you can make the code 4-8 digits long so makes it harder for someone to guess by seeing what numbers were pressed.
I have this lock, and it's really fingerprint resistant. But to your point, there are 4 of us in our house, each of us w/our own code, so even if fingerprinting were an issue, a code would be really hard to guess.
I just got the nest lock and I also want to change the bottom lock nob to prevent accidentally locking myself out. I am having a lot if trouble finding a passage nob or handle for the exterior, all of the ones I have found are meant for indoors only, do you have a link or recommendations for purchasing a non-locking nob for front door?
A good quality stainless knob will work even if it says it's an interior knob. However commercial grade knobs will last longer outdoors and are typically heavier duty I recommend this: amzn.to/36Xpkkh but there are also less expensive options like this that will work: amzn.to/3jV6n5r you just might need to replace it 5 years down the road.
Try either one of these 2 things: 1. Check to make sure that the deadbolt can fully extend into the frame side of the door. If not use a drill bit or chisel to make the hole deeper. 2. If the lock is catching on the door frame lock hole mounting plate you can either try moving the plate or use files: amzn.to/3otQ5Cn to slightly enlarge the mounting plate. Typically it doesn't take much filing to get the lock working smoothly with a miss aligned door, and sometimes even beveling the edges of the frame hole locking plate will solve the problem. I've also used cutting bits: amzn.to/2VHCkUm like these to enlarge the hole before.
In my case, I had to realign the door due to poor installation. I removed the casing trim, and re-shimmed the door. Then I also had to slightly file the metal on the receiving hole side.
Hey man, recently discovered your channel and i really appreciate the videos! Do you have any suggestions or guidance on condo buildings and their street entrances? I live in a condo, and there is (only) one other unit. I already have the Yale lock for our unit’s entry door. But that is inside. Do you know of any work arounds / integration with an intercom system. I’m not interested in the ability of using the intercom with Nest / google, but the ability to power a nest doorbell with it + some way to remotely unlock / “buzz” someone in. I know I’d have to confirm approval with my neighbor and property manager. Thanks again!
I have an old door where the with close bore holes that are 2 7/8" apart center to center VS standard doors where lock and handle are 5 1/2" apart. Will this work for me?
There's a battery terminal on the bottom you can press a 9v battery on to "charge the battery up" if the batteries die. It also notfies you in the app when thr batteries are getting low.
@@OneHourSmartHome But what if the touchscreen fails or the electromotor? Or its motherboard? It is an electronic device after all. Is there a way to open the lock if the device becomes unresponsive for whatever reason?
@@clansman89 If that's a concern to you, and to be fair, it is to me as well, the Yale Assure comes with a key form. Schlage Encode and the Eufy Smart Lock WiFi also have backup key options.
Yes, it's a good lock. However I prefer the Yale August lock:amzn.to/2CZwica or the Yale Nest lock. The Schlage encode: amzn.to/2BKPwS0 has a backup hard keyway if that is something you're looking for. In my opinion the Yale August lock has the most features because it integrates with online short term rental platforms but all 3 are high quality products.
I have the Encode and I love it. It won’t unlock with the Google Assist, but it will lock and tell you the status. The app is also good. I have had it for about a year after my husband locked me out by accident. I had friends who were helping me with something beat me home. I could unlock the door so they could go inside while I was at the store.
I’m considering purchasing this lock along with the Nest system. I’m wanting a “childproof” lock that I can lock on the inside or from the app and the turn will not allow the door to open regardless. Is there such a thing? I’m trying to make sure my 88 year old G’ma can’t go outdoors without supervision. If this YALE lock doesnt offer that, do you know of one that does? Thanks so much for any help.
No help with this lock. But an easy quick fix for your family, they make little magnetic sensor alarms. You can put them on your doors / windows (even cabinets , fridge..., or garbage cans with lids to keep your pets from getting into garbage.) It makes a loud pitch alarm when the door or window is opened. They are super cheap too! Hope this helps. www.amazon.com/dp/B0727QX9SC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_qtuVFbTNYQJCG?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
hey mate, great video. is there an option where if you input the wrong password a certain a number of times, it gives a 30sec delay or more? just like a phone?
Is there any advantage to having the Nest integration other than having everything be in the Nest app? I'm wondering if there are any advantages to having it be Nest vs going with August for more integration with other apps (ITTT, etc). Thanks!
I can think of two: First, if you happen to have the Nest Secure alarm system, you are able to disable that alarm system by unlocking the lock using either any predefined codes or the Home/Nest app. I can tell you from experience, it is a nifty, streamlined feature that serves the purpose well. Secondly, the lack of that auto-unlock feature which we find in the Yale August actually bolsters security for the Yale Nest, if it forgoes convenience in so doing. Now, this is a divisive and highly subjective issue, of course, but that is an advantage to some and a deal-breaker to others.
I have this lock, have had it for a couple of years. In the past year I keep having an issue where it goes offline. Seems to be an issue others have as well. Have you had this issue? Curious if you have any tips on how to fix this problem?
Not through the Nest app, but I have mine connected to my Google Home Hub and can schedule a routine that would fit that need. If you have Alexa, you could probably do the same thing.
those auto locks dont work well where the door frame expands and contracts due to the season and humidity and will not lock because the deadbolt hole and deadbolt get slightly misaligned. in that case you need one with a turning mechanism so you can pull on the door handle and then turn the deadbolt from the outside to set the lock
I received this for garage door. My Locksmith charged me $1,000 doors and never gave me the White connector you showed. Is this why my neighbors have been breaking in my house?
you got ripped off my friend, sorry about that. The white connector you mention just acts like a bridge between your wifi and the lock so that the lock doesn't have to connect directly to wifi and therefore helping with battery life. The box has to say something like NEST X YALE + NEST CONNECT meaning that the Nest connect actually comes in the package otherwise it won't.
You need the nest connect bridge: amzn.to/2IoyBI0 as shown in the picture link with the lock. I've seen them available on ebay or the nest website. The nest connect bridge is the device which connects the nest lock to the internet and allows you to change the pass codes.
I never lock the lower key lock, I just use the deadbolt with the smart lock. However you could replace the lower lock with a passage set like this: amzn.to/31u3Kjr that doesn't have a ket if you want to prevent the lower lock from accidentally locking. Thanks for watching and the comment.
This video shows you how to get back in: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VlKQPBIzQtU.html There are terminals on the bottom of the Nest that you hold a 9V battery on too unlock the lock. : amzn.to/3dlhVww
Very informative - the Yale lock features seem great but are there any other devices that work with Nest? e.g. is there any kind of nest-compatible relay or something so rather than driving an actual lock it closes/opens contacts (e.g. to operate electric gate controllers or strike latch etc) - I'm finding it really hard to find a doorbell-type camera with two way audio and ability to open gate or similar without having to leave the app, operate, then go back into the app... any ideas ? :) Could probably modify the lock to almost achieve something similar but it seems a bit of a waste.
Do you need to plug something into a outlet near the door. I have a similar layout where you walk in and then go walk. Up the stairs but theres no electric plug until you get upstairs. Yale told me that wouldnt work?
This is the second home in which ru-vid.comUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU we've replaced our "regular" doorbell with a Ring video doorbell and we really enjoy it. It is very easy to install and it works very well, with a clear picture through the app and good in-home use (we added the chime, which is also easy to install and doesn't require another thought to use).
@@OneHourSmartHome Hi-I've had this issue too. Installed two years ago, worked great, but needed to change "owner" of Google Home account from my construction contractor to myself (he should have set it up that way to begin with!) Anyway, the lock would no longer connect to nest connect through the Nest app. I've spent probably 60 hours on this problem including several LONG phone calls to Yale & Nest customer support lines. I was sent a new Nest Connect unit and new Yale lock. No dice. The end result? They say it's a "known issue" and I will have to borrow and ANDROID phone to set up as many times it does not work with iPhones. (????!!!) If you google this issue you will find it all over the internet. I've tried 5 different iphones and everything in this article support.google.com/googlenest/thread/16732706?hl=en but so far nothing works! I have invested in the Nest Thermostat, Hello Camera, and 3 Google home units so I'd really love any input/help you can provide :) All other devices online and connected to the Nest Connect and the Google Home app, BTW. Yale lock works by setting codes manually but I cannot operate the lock remotely, which really sucks because it's an Airbnb rental unit. Sigh....Sorry for the rant :)
Huge flaw on this is NO door closed sensor.. imagine door is left ajar, but this lock tells you door is locked (because deadbolt is going in and out)… bad idea - especially if you’re a remote owner or Airbnb
The lock will still work with the access codes programed onto it and the schedules already set. But you won't be able to unlock it remotely or make changes to codes until power is restored.
