Looks like your common wire isn't actually hooked up based on what the screen showed. I'd STRONGLY recommend hooking that up on your system's motherboard. It's very simple, and not using it can cause odd problems eventually (even if it's been working fine so far), the unit failing when you need it most, or even damage your HVAC unit. The power stealing scheme is a terrible hack that they use to sell more units to people with no live C wire, and it should not be used no matter what Nest says.

It will never stop trying to “learn” so it only works well if your family moves near the thermostat frequently. If your nest thermostat is located out of the way it might not work for you. We liked it so we could regulate the temp before we got home or if someone was sleeping we could check the temp from work to make sure the house was comfortable for the one at home sleeping. We finally had to get rid of it because we didn’t move near it enough, our schedules for work changed a lot & it didn’t work for us.

Just a heads up, that is a standard electrical box hole and exactly how it should be. Whoever set that box up looks to have provided ample additional wiring, made it so the wiring wouldn’t fall back in the wall when updates were made, and even put it in the box in a pretty organized way. You’re lucky to have that setup instead of just a two finger hole in the wall with some wires sticking out.

I have the Nest E thermostat. For the past 2 years. It fails in the most basic function. Keeping the temperature at the comfortable set level. Temperature maintenance range by default is 2F or 1.2C and is not adjustable. Nest support claims this is a feature. Most other brands have a maintenance range of 1F or 0.6C. Far more comfortable. I find myself constantly adjusting the temperature to stay comfortable. If you are looking for a new thermostat. Buy something else.

The reason for the MONSTEROUS hole is because the guy who installed it needed 3 holes anyway (one for the cable and 2 for the screws to hold the thermostat in place) and he needed to put a back box in which is code with that type of thermostat so don't blame him lol. Or maybe it was a light switch firstly and someone used the lighting cable as a snake to pull the AC cable in. There are several reasons for the hole

Question... if your wifi goes out for some reason, will the thermostat go totally out and not keep the temperature, or does it have the ability as a backup to switch to the program settings and run on the regular program without wifi? I am comparing it to the Honeywell wifi thermostat that can do that. Thanks!

Hi! I noticed that at first you’d said “apartment” and then later mentioned its a “condo.” I am renting an apartment and dont really want to ‘ask’ for approval. So if I get an electronics (TV mounting) installer to just swap out the old with this one, do you think the management will trip out on me and be a cause for kicking me out? I consider it similar to swapping out a light bulb, but I wanted to hear what you think?
@TechDaily
@TechDaily 5 лет назад
Hey! So I live in a condo (rental) and I didn’t bother asking my landlord or the building HOA for approval. Something like this is so easily installed and removed that it’s not a big deal either way. Keep your old thermostat just in case, and when you move out, you could always have the old one put back. It’s seriously like a 15 minute or less install anyway.
@skyBlueAlisha
@skyBlueAlisha 5 лет назад
I think the same thing I've dealt with remodeling apartment complexes a lot that I have lived in. And pretty much depending on what state you live in as long as you put it back the way it was when you moved in they can't hold you reliable for what you do in between. Honestly I have even hung flat screen TVs and rewired my outlet and just patched it up before I left. I'd love to see your update on this and did it work in your apartment complex? Do you have an older unit?
@bawattsyl
@bawattsyl 5 лет назад
Agreed, swapping out a thermostat isn't a huge deal. You'll just want to reinstall the old one before you move out, or you'll most likely be charged $ from your deposit. I've lived in many apts in various states, and generally inside changes are ok if you put back before you move out. The one road block I have come up against is installing a new smart lock or deadbolt to the main door. This seems to be the only thing I can't do. Just make sure the thermostat you buy is compatible.. because many reccomended a C wire, if its not there, the installation can still usually be done, however, it might require access to an area you don't have access to.. thus needing to involve management. The nest e, however, is usually easily installed with or without a c wire. Best of luck!
