Net billing and net metering are two methods utility companies use to compensate solar energy system owners for their electricity overproduction (extra kWh’s sent back to the grid). In this video, Charles and Warren explain how both methods work and how they are different.

Like your guys short, to the point, educational videos. Looks like my cooperative here in PA, Adams Electric, is going to be phasing out net metering over the next couple years. They’re telling me they’re not obligated to honor the power purchase agreement I signed for net metering. Just put my system in a year and a half ago.

Does not my over production force it's way back into the grid thus turning my meter backwards and later when I pull power from the grid, the meter then goes forward again which just cancels out each other out which has the effect of a lower bill without any effort to account for KW's at all ?

Yes, with net metering, but not net billing. With net metering, the electricity you upload to the grid is worth the same as the electricity you’d purchase from the grid. You receive one credit for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) you upload to the grid. You can exchange those credits for an equal amount of kWh whenever needed. Or you can bank these credits, roll them over from month to month, and then eventually receive a cash payment for unused credit. Solar net billing works a little differently. The excess energy generated by your solar system is “sold” to the utility for less than it would cost for you to buy it as a customer. Check out this blog for a deeper dive into both compensation methods -> www.paradisesolarenergy.com/blog/net-billing-vs-net-metering-for-solar

I'm not talking about any metering or billing at all. Does my excess production shove a digital meter backwards as it forces itself back to the grid , thus there is no accounting of it happening at all? I am simply lowering usage that I'm billed for ? I have a transfer switch that breaks my grid connection during a grid-down event so I can't send juice out onto the lines because of my stand by Generac.

@@donking3083 When connected to the grid, solar systems are equipped with net or smart meters. These run bi-directionally, allowing them to properly account for the net energy you’ve used, which is all the energy you’ve consumed minus the energy your solar system produced. Does that answer your question? Here's a blog with more details on the different types of meters used with solar. bit.ly/3KMkTt4

Would it make sense to oversize your panels (let's say 150%+ of annual usage) and go with net billing as opposed to sizing your system to 100% and going with net metering?
@thesolarenergychannel
@thesolarenergychannel Год назад
If your utility offers net metering, they will not also offer net billing. It's one or the other.
@GCTubaTim

@@thesolarenergychannel I don't believe this is true. I've been talking to PUCO (Ohio) and they're telling me I can utilize either a net metering tariff or cogeneration (net billing) tariff with my system.
@thesolarenergychannel
@thesolarenergychannel Год назад
@@GCTubaTim There is a misunderstanding somewhere because the customer doesn't have the ability to decide between net billing or net metering. It's based on the utility. They either use net metering or net billing, not both.

@@thesolarenergychannel I'm literally talking to AEP Ohio and they're telling me I can choose which one to go with.
@thesolarenergychannel
@thesolarenergychannel Год назад
@@GCTubaTim We are not aware of this. In our experience, the customer has not had the option to pick between the two. Regardless, upsizing by 50% would still greatly diminish your ROI.

Thanks very much for the information. And I wanna ask net billing or net metering depend by your contract with the electricity services company. If you choose different electricity services, is there difference with these two methods? Thanks

The method used would be based on your utility company.
