Yes, King and Uea have never been in a Friends with Benefits relationship and I think that is the whole point of the drama and novel. They used Friends with Benefits as a way to lie to themselves thinking that they could be FWB and not have emotions get involved. However, King pretty much liked and cared about Uea from even before they started their FWB relationship, which was clearly, even if he didn't want to admit it or was even conscious of it, just him trying to subconsciously get Uea to open up and allow him to get closer to him. I think Uea was lying to himself trying to protect his heart after being hurt so often, thinking he could separate his emotions from physical pleasure and they could be FWB without getting involved. But we know he was just lying to himself because even before they decided to be FWB we see Uea being shocked that King could sleep with someone that he doesn't love, so that clearly establishes that Uea equates the act of sleeping with someone with love. I think he was also always lying to himself because what he really has always wanted was for someone to love and take care of him and treat him well. King has often shown subtle things to Uea over the years, even though they always argued, that demonstrated that he could be caring, so even if Uea didn't want to acknowledge it, I think subconsciously he knew he found what he needed in King. Uea was just afraid to let his walls down because of his past experience with playboys, and to keep his heart safe he told himself that they were only FWB. Neither one of them were ready to admit at first that they were looking for more than FWB, so they used that as an excuse to hide from themselves what they really wanted and how they actually felt.
