I recommend watching this first episode then watching the original's first 2 episodes to see how much better the original is. The writing is so damn good in the original.
weird coparison, first 2 episodes of cartoon are actually not that good like whole first book, ATLA shine only in book one finale and in 2nd/3rd season
I recommend watching the whole thing, meaning also book 2 and 3, when those are released, before you judge the Netflix adapation. They've already used stuff from book 2 in book 1, and even used a Korra reference, so you can't judge anything before you've seen the whole thing.
It’s not about comparing it to the original dog. I’m 4 eps in and the show is not bad, some things don’t translate from animation to live action. ATLA animated is the best show of all time you can’t compare it to that or you’ll just be disappointed. Young kid actors are good, cgi a lil goofy but it’s fine
Love the fact that they downplayed Sokka being sexist because it ‘didn’t age well’ but they also sapped both Katara and Suki of their characters and made Katara completely useless and passive
@@curtiszyr It was according to the actor of Katara and Sokka agreeing with her. They said there was a bit too much sexism in the original so they 'tone it down' if i remember correctly.. Honestly it's so brain dead of them and the directors, etc cus portraying sexism is so obviously different from condoning it..
@@curtiszyr the writers said on Twitter that Sokka being sexist didn’t age well or something, which is stupid because Suki and Katara humble him by showing how strong and capable women are
@@Bread_bread01 i just don’t understand why they think katara facing sexism wouldn’t have aged well, it shows the adversities she had to face and it also shows great character growth for sokka. i think there’s a big difference when a character in a show is sexist verses when the writers are, and some people cannot differentiate that.
@@serene3175 exactly! If anything, the original show was way ahead of its time by giving Sokka a feminist arc. Sexism in the U.S. saw a spike in popularity during the early 2000s due to some contributing political and societal factors, so having strong female characters putting a chauvinistic teenage boy in his place was very progressive for its time.
Man, katara just intentionally bending the iceberg open made no sense. The whole reason they even found aang was because she blew up on sokka and her accidentally cracking open the iceberg was supposed to show how little control she had over her bending. We completely lost the introduction to that and they dont even really act like real siblings like in the cartoon
Fr and it’s because they removed Sokka’s sexist character. The whole reason she blew up was because he was being sexist.. and I have no idea why they removed it. It was so important to his character development; the kyoshi warriorrs, finding his own passion, being a goofy lady’s man, etc etc.
Katara was pretty terrible at water bending until the North Pole arc. However it's 2024, so women in media aren't allowed to be bad at things anymore. Which is why Katara has to save the day in the 1st episode instead of the actual MC. Weird change, since Katara ends up becoming the world's most powerful water bender anyway. I guess the producers couldn't wait to start Girl-Bossing it up!! Or whatever.
I think that went over my head because I was watching her try to bend the boat back thinking “why tf am I looking at this boat rn she should be grilling sokka”
@@garxgarright and before the North Pole she breaks character and steal the scroll and learns after she gets burned that she’s a healer. So it’s not like she’s bad. The live action made her miles worse. Having her barely be able to pick up a drop in the fire nation ship instead of her catching a fish. And she teaches herself shit before they even get the scroll. It’s definitely a show though.
I watched the first two episodes and called it a day. I feel like they really did suki's character so dirty, they took out all the parts of her teaching sokka a lesson on toxic masculinity and how to be a better warrior and made her entire character just being in love with sokka. Idk how they thought that was a win for feminism but it was actually painful to watch.
Honestly I still got the same vibe it just wasn’t as overt. Like sokka still clearly thought he knew more than her and tried to teach her but she put him in his place and taught him. Then he made it clear that he respected her as a warrior. The toxic masculinity was definitely still there it was just less on the nose and more subtle. I didn’t have a problem with it.
It is kinda interesting that they omitted Sokka being embarrassed losing to women but they instead had Suki be the one with more interest toward Sokka than the other way around...to tell the truth the OG didn't even tease their pairing until Zuko went to the island I think.
@@keerti3768 for sure, but the live action doesn't really set up katara's character as nurturing/caring enough for it to feel genuine (the line delivery also doesn't help)
They failed in the casting of these females. The actresses of katara has no presence. Azula is flat asf….. and NOT AZULA AT ALL. Mai ……… why did they cast a phat chick ????????? That’s supposed to be zukos love interest.. and I don’t buy it 😂 They better not ef Toph up in the casting as I’m not pleased with the females. The only good female actresses so far is suki and June
@G-LukeJA From what I know they didn't have the idea that he's the Avatar until Aang was uprfont about it...although I think Gran Gran did try to exile Aang without much explanation probably because she probably doesn't want the tribe to expect much from him.
Worse than that, the first season of the OG and the Netflix show have the same runtime, just divided differently; so they could've paced things better, they just wanted to cram all the nostalgia bait into the first few episodes so that they'd get renewed.
No for real, it just didn’t need to happen. It’s ok to let animated shows stay as animated shows. Live action should not be considered the pivotal achievement of your story being told. There are things that you just can’t do in live action that work beautifully in animation & vice versa
The device you typed this comment on isn't a need. I'm sure if you lose it tomorrow you won't immediately die. Does that mean it shouldn't exist or isnt of value? You people are ridiculous
By showing the airbender’s demise first they completely ruin the shock that Aang’s supposed to get when he finds out he’s been frozen for 100 years. And the audience is already shown their demise which ruins the whole air temple trip. The emotional weight of the first show will absolutely not be captured by this live action
Tbh idk why this show was made bc the actual creators of the ORIGINAL series ATLA are and HAVE BEEN currently working on a new Avatar series where the next Avatar is an Earth bender because it takes place after Korra, obviously animated shows like Avatar take a long time to make but like I’m still waiting for THAT show and I would’ve been fine if this never got made
not to mention a new movie coming in 2025, based on Kyoshi’s life! as someone who i absolutely obsessed with the kyoshi novels and am currently in the midst of the dawn of yangchen, i am SOOO excited, don’t hear enough people talk about
It gets a bit better as you watch the show. Sokka and Zuko capture the characters very well but the others require some more acting classes or better direction. The script itself was a bit stale in the 1st episode.
The actors are super young and talented and it’s a bit unfair to discredit them when the casting is done well imo. It’s definitely the script + knowing they have to stay true the animated counterparts personalities.
@@avaisofflineNO don't come with that defense! They were CASTED for a big series! The casting directors should've done a much better job, many of the actors are horrible...I mean come on if damn HARRY POTTER can do it, Avatar could aswell...there are great child actors out there and they should have a better standard...not people that looks like they've been casted for a school play.
@@swinto4795 Sorry, but I respect the casting choices staying true to the characters respective ethnic/cultural vision. They really do look like, fight, are age appropriate, and act like their character. If they’re not meeting your standards, that’s something we can agree to disagree. The flow of the script and character writing is average at best which is why I think some scenes fell flat. Some scenes were disappointing, some done well. IMO- It’s hard to live up to an animated style version of your character which portrayed exaggerated emotions that can’t be expressed IRL without being cringy. The show is also plot heavy too, so we don’t get the banter and jokes like we did in the show :( Edit: By the way, I’m saying this as someone who wants this adaptation to succeed and stand on its own, but we can be critical and feel excitement/disappointment without hating on the young actors.
He isn’t he’s levitating. He’s only going high enough where he can push off the ground he always did that. He couldn’t fly when shot out the sky because he was too far from the ground.
I tried to stay optimistic. Even after the first two episodes, were I saw stale acting, bad pacing, and omission of important scenes that I feel like mean a lot to the story- I STILL pushed forward thinking “well, I still love these characters and universe so much, so I’m still going to just try to enjoy some things like the bending or whatever” but honestly it just got worse. I’m so sad. I feel bad for the cast too because they are all young and likable kids in real life. Nice effort, but no live action will ever catch the magic the animation did. It’s so unnecessary to keep trying this.
It only gets better with every episode, if you want to hate it you will. Expecting it to be a one-to-one adaptation and thinking it can be better than the original is unhinged. I'm sure anyone who watched with an open mind has really enjoyed it.
I loved the live action, we need to stop expecting a copy & past version of the animated series. So many people have enjoyed this live action & Asian culture is being highly appreciated in one of the best stories ever told. I find it a little mean to say that this is unnecessary. If you didn’t like it then that sucks but it worked really well for others. Plus, book one is the slowest book in the animated series. Not many people refer to it as their favorite chapter so I’m sure they’ll up the scale on the next two books.
@@queenpanda26Not sure where you got that they "want to hate it" when they stated they watched it with optimism and tried to like it. It doesn't make someone a bad person or "close-minded" to not have enjoyed the same thing as you. And you're not a bad person for liking it either. :) I'm really happy that you found enjoyment out of it and hopefully with enough positive press and peoole like you who defend it, we'll get an even better second season :) I personally didn't like it very much either, but I would really like to see how it ends with a second and third season
Funnily enough, it feels like… the “theater episode” where we’re getting a general gist of the story, but it’s clearly not quite…. Up to quality with what we’ve seen and what we know.
Some might say I'm nitpicking but strike 1 for me was watching Aang fly in his first scene. Flying is an extremely rare airbender technique which Aang never knew how to do unless he was in the avatar state. Its so rare that even in the Legend of Kora where most other benders have learned and use all rare techniques like lava bending, lighting bending, metal bending, flying was still not a thing, until Zaheer did it. Aang depended on his glider and Appa in order to fly. Him not being able to just simply fly away in dangerous situations is an important part of the story, especially since most of it will be with him being hunted down. That is something that I think the writers in the animated series took into consideration. I think this show will be similar to how I feel about The Last Of Us series, it'll be good but definitely not close to being as good as the original.
this is so true! especially because later, when he's captured by zuko and escapes, he just .. falls off the ship?? why didn't he just fly like he did in the beginning since that's what he can do, apparently? it was an absolute joke. cartoon aside, the plot holes in the live action are gaping, and it disappointed me so much even as its own entity.
@@0116x Exactly, I thought the same thing when he was escaping from the ship. Ive watched 3 episodes so far and Im honestly not feeling it. It's definitely better than the movie but not near as good as the cartoon.
you saying sokka’s actor looks like him is exactly how i felt when i was watching the pilot… like YEAH he’s definitely not as brown as originally designed, but his facial features themselves and the angles of his face look verrryyy sokka
Ngl they chose great for Sokka. Took a couple episodes for me to like this version of Sokka, but by the end of the season he was basically the only character I liked
I'm disappointed that they used so much cgi and filmed so little on location, and I hate the costumes. They had such an opportunity to create the culture through that. I thought most of the actors have potential, but it's just soulless, and I feel like the writers didn't understand the characters.
I had the same issue with Disney's _Percy Jackson_ series, it was genuinely irritating to see that the fight with Ares on the beach was green screen, like they couldn't afford to film on location, are you serious? Son, they're churning this shit out to the tune of $15 million per **_e p i s o de,_** full length _Hollywood films_ have that as their lowest minimum budget, sweet Christ. That scene of Katara @9:43 just expositioning as she tells things to Aang looked straight out of the M. Night Shamaylan film, I'm dead serious, the same stale, disinterested tone to her voice.
I was so disappointed by Percy Jackson! For that reason as well, and that they stripped the characters of all personality and all of the exposition. Yes! There were legit scenes in this that had me thinking of the movie. It's better than the movie... but that's really not an accomplishment
I also had very low expectations going into it but still tried to be as open minded as possible. So far I‘ve watched the first 4 episodes and I gotta be honest, while the first 3 episodes still had things I liked even though there also were things I did not like and/ or missed they really dropped the ball at episode 4 💀 .. it’s an absolute disaster what they‘ve done with Bumi‘s character and the relationship between him and Aang. And they randomly included a certain episode from book 2 just for the sake of having it because the creators likely were aware it has a very popular meme/ pop cultural moment in it. I‘m actually quite pissed now.
Bruh i think Zuko’s scar doesn’t look as intense because they still have the actor his eyebrow on the burn side. In the animated series it’s like partly off putting because it’s that lack of expression and everything because of the scar.
It does its best when it expands and extrapolates from the animated version. Beginning of the 3rd episode and the twist after the blue spirit etc. gran gran being the one to gift the scroll to katara instead of her finding it on a pirate ship makes more sense because even if all the benders were killed or captured they would still have scrolls and artifacts about bending - they were hidden from katara to protect her from being found out. Kiyoshi just wrecking soldiers and screaming at Aang was perfect
I mean the hole in your logic is that the firebenders stole all the scrolls. So when they wiped out the water benders at the southern water tribe, they took all of their scrolls as well. Why would they leave advance water bendering forms in the hands of people they don’t want water bending ya know? The pirates stole the scroll from waterbenders. That is realistic.
@@daisiesx96thats a hole too, like how did the pirates stole it from the waterbenders if the fire nation took them all? It makes more sence this way and its more personal being given by gran gran plus cmon if they could hide a whole waterbender from them they can hide a piece of paper
tbh as different as it is I kinda liked it. if you watch the whole thing through they actually do follow the original timeline of season 1, they just skip some minor filler scenes over and get more straight to the point. For the most part the storyline is pretty much the same just with some changes to how certain scenes went, they still go to kyoshi island but there isn't any koi fish riding and suki has a whole mom. They also definitely do still go to the Northern water temple and the moon still dies and so does yue and I think they animated that whole fight scene pretty awesome imo
also sokka definitely lightens up more as the episodes go through! there's a lot of change of tone in some of the characters that I still feel iffy about but for the most part I like how different it is from the original. nothing can EVER beat the original but the live action is good (to me) in its own different way
@@nafola7617 I fell like a steampunk LOK live action would actually be really cool. LOK is already pretty mature so they wouldn’t ruin the whole tone of the series by putting it into a live action, plus toned down colour would make it look a lot better and natural (not obviously an adaptation of something)
It’s honestly not that bad. There are things that they’ve changed that I’ve liked and things that I definitely don’t like lol. But overall it’s okay. I really wish these shows could have more than 8 episodes because of pacing issues. It’s not even just remakes but shows in general have this issue.
SPOILERS FROM EP 6 AHEAD!!! I think my favorite addition was the fact that Zuko's crew is the 41st Division that he spoke up for during the famous War meeting. That is so beautiful and definitely helps you see why they'd respect him so much after Iroh tells them about Zuko's past.
yeah i think (at least on the storytelling front) when netflix/streaming services in general FINALLY decide to do away with 8 ep limits will these adaptation shows feel a little bit better. aaron said how jampacked and awkward percy jackson was when it came to this as well. a lot just ends up being stuff told to the viewer and connections aren't really formed between characters + the viewer and the characters. opla (while slightly better at it) still suffered from it as well (although most of the reason they ended up on 8 eps was because they ran out of money)
To me the show was just annoying to watch mostly because of course I mostly knew what was going to happen as a fan of the original series but it was just written, directed and pacedm worse (characters were also more boring the dialogue was stiff and the acting wasn't that good). Like yeah yeah I know what happens next and they did it sooo much better in the original series. I also did not like how they wrote the previous avatars. Roku is super bland. Kyoshi and Kuruk are just angry traumatised a**holes who base their "spiritual advice" not on wisdom they gained form their lives but on trauma response (Like this raises a question, should avatar even exist if they are that spiritually and morally flawed??). All of those characters have much more color and personality in the og series even when they had very little screentime. Also I hate the trope that "chosen one has to be alone yada yada". Literally almost all of the avatars we know had a team? I could understand this advice from Kuruk because of his personal story but it was never part of the lore that avatar has to carry the burden alone...
The comment about being able to fit at least two of the animated episodes run time in one episode is a talk I had watching with my father. Realistically with 8 hour long eps, a few episode cuts and pacing playing they could've fit a chunk of the animated shows season 1 also in this season. Instead they aggressively deviate from the original plot and not for the better, often times for the worse.
If they wanted to do a live action so bad, they should've just done a different story in the same world like a prequel or something instead of recreating the original show...
The way I see it, animation IS probably better than live action. Because there's alot more you can do with animation. There's alot more room for creativity in animation. But also, it's always so satisfying to see something animated being turned into live action. But in the case of this new avatar series, it might LOOK great, but the tone and rating change was a bad idea. WHY MAKE IT ALL DARK?! The original series did such a great job at balancing lighthearted moments with dark moments! And netflix ruined it because they wanted to make it a frikin serialized drama! 💀
Imagine committing to this whole series... getting to the final agni kai.... and watching LA Zuko, who already starts pretty soft and sympathetic duel LA Azula, who already starts on the verge of cracking..... their arches will be to just do a circle.
Right! I feel like there were fake reviews maybe or maybe they genuinely liked it idk. I just found the pacing off and- kind of boring (wondering if it’s the talking) that was the main thing.
aaron and jo been on a roll recently thank u boys for spoiling us, been sick in bed and binge watching the whole channel since the past few days jsjsjs
It was okay, for some reason during my first watch I was too irritated with Katara being the one to save them from Zuko's fire shot. The second episode also irked me a bit too, I basically feel the same way I felt when I watched Korra, excitement first and then a series of "no!!" and "why?!" so now I'm just gonna go rewatch the original -_-
ATLA is my favorite show so I've had a lot of thoughts watching the show so far. I kind of want to see it through, theres some nice parts, but for the most part its got me kind of like, "why they do that?" And the acting... Sokka's carrying for me right now.
I only have continued for Sokka. Yeah, he's not quite the energetic, loud, annoying guy we know in the originals, but he makes some really funny comments in the next episodes and definitely grew on me. I would encourage giving the second episode a go just for Suki and Sokka's interactions lol
because we're in one of the most cooked eras of Hollywood ever, all they do is make remakes and even remakes of remakes. like we literally just got a new mean girls based off of the musical based off the movie based off the book???
Watched the first episode last night, didn't hate it. My only real complaints are how bad Iroh was and how easily Gyatso got murked by Sozin. That shit was whack.
I like the show. I feel like the hate isn’t deserved. The show is mid but people saying that it was worse than the movie is only saying that for approval from others.
See this is what I needed-A REAL REVIEW. 😂 Because if the “Love is Blind” duo can’t get to the second episode than it’s not worth a 120$ mill season 😂😂
The characters really seem to have no depth or drive like in the series. Like its so weird, it doesnt seems very interesting or catching because the characters arent that intriguing
i went in without high expectations (no expectations actually) but episode 1 wasn’t disappointing imo 😊 but to each their own ofc !! thank you for this 🙏♥️
The whole point of Netflix and other companies picking up live action adaptations of tv/anime series is to try and get a new generations or just new viewers in general to watch and become interested in anime or the said series. But the thing is that they don’t live up to the hype and expectations of those said series and to the original audiences so it’s disappointing and it just leaves a bad feeling and overall disappointment to those original fans.
The dialogue in the first episode was rough but eoisode 2 doesn’t have all this exposition and they brought the comedic elements across better. Plus I liked what they did with Sokka and Suki’s relationship. I think y’all should give it one more shot
watching this and then comparing it to the original is one way to competely ruin it for you, because it's never gonna be the same. people just complain about the differences, like just go watch the original, it's still there
@@Zbeez754 not saying it shouldn't be compared, but comparing it is just gonna completely ruin it, why watch it anyway if you're just gonna compare it to the better version and complain, just watch the better version

I’m speechless… it wasn’t even fun to watch. The acting was hollow, the costumes looked cheap and the pacing was sooo wrong. I guess the CGI is okay, if you squint.
I watched all of it except the last two episodes. It does have some really great scenes, and those scenes are when it's actually showing you stuff, not giving you exposition dumps. Idk, it's a show you can watch after the animated one if you want more Avatar but eh. The dialogue doesn't really get better either...
if your’e going to compare it to the animated show your not going to enjoy it because it’s a live action adaptation. It’s not going to be a 1:1. Instead compare it to other live action series. @@mcdoublenfries7412 no I did it myself. If people were true avatar fans they wouldn’t so heavily critique a show so heavily just for clickbait or views
I have my fair share of criticisms if the live action show but honestly. At this point I can put them all aside because it has been a bridge to show this amazing show to my older mother. She has trouble focusing on animation because of her disabilities but live action tends to be targeted more towards older generations so she finds she can focus on the main points of the story and then grasp them enough to talk about them with me. Until this new live action one version has come out is has been a struggle and now it's a wonderful bonding moment. Even if there are a fair share of changes.
There are people who can’t get into animation or anime. My dad loved the live actions of the anime Kenshin & One Piece so much that he wouldn’t stop talking about them but he doesn’t like anime or animation. So m I’m happy that he has a live action version of these stories.
I don’t mind sokka’s differences honestly. We have to remember the original show was for children vs this show was meant to be a grittier reimagining. Sokka in both shows is 15/16 when it starts. Idk about yall, but what I know about teenage boys is most of the time you couldn’t pay them to hang out with a 12 year old kid, let alone have them participate in the same shenanigans and find them fun. Don’t get me wrong, they still butchered the characterizations of almost every character, but there are some changes here and there that not only make sense, but can add at least something good to the new version of the characters.
Episode 1 is arugably the worst one of the season, I think you guys should give some of the others a shot. Totally agree that there's no point in this show existing, it stays pretty mid but it does improve from the first episode as the season goes on.
FINALLY ANOTHER HATER!!! The actors are so cute and I’m happy for them but FUUUdge this show! I’ll never shut up about how LIGHT Katara and Sokka are 😭😭😭
As soon as you guys said only one live action has worked, I knew you were going to say one piece lol. As a die hard OP fan, I have to say, they did a much better job than I thought they would. I’m not looking forward to what they do with chopper though 😂
I kept laughing during the kyoshi intro the way they reworded kataras monologue is so weird. And then gran gran just did it again but word for word 20 minutes later
