Not to mention the editting. Lumet's Fail Safe...with no on screen action or enhancing music cues...builds a suspense almost on the level of the original Jaws...but utilizing only editing, and camera angles with the precision of a swiss watch....That is not easy to do.
This is the greatest period in cinema acting imo, "New Hollywood" (late 60s - late70s). I think this kind of realistic acting is rarely seen nowadays because now they want actors to grab you by the hand and throw at your face how you supposed to feel. They don't trust the audience's intelligence anymore, and they're probably right.
Duvall is on fire in this scene. Excellent acting. What a great run he had in the 70's. Godfather I and II, Network, The Great Santini, Apocalypse Now. He even pops in to The Conversation.
