The only microphones that sound similar are the Eartworks Ethos, Shure SM7B, EV RE20. Neumann KM 105 and Neumann U87AI. The Earthworks is kinda muffled with a little loose of a low end. The Shure SM7B as More Energy on the high Bass frequencies. But you might call it booming as well. In a vacuum, I’d go for either the RE20 or the BCM705. But at that price range I’d probably be saving up for the BCM 104.
Thank you so much for giving the Neumann BCM 705 a stage. I consider this nice-looking microphone totally underated. I had to give it to my wife because she loves it so much. I, for myself, have its condenser brother BCM 104 in use. My favourites in your comparison besides the BCM 705 itself are the RE20 (which is still my favourite for your voice), the Earthworks Ethos, which I love even more, and the KSM 104. Btw. I use the BCM 104 (like the BCM 705, which now belongs to my wife) upside down.
All of your videos are very helpful, and this is another great video. A lot of these microphones sound really good, but my favourite was the Lauren. I myself have just bought an sE electronics 4400a and a sE electronics T2, both of which sound great to me. I am using them for voiceovers and on my podcast.
I was looking to see how the pricing was, and noticed that Neumann has a BCM104 (about $1200). I couldn't tell you what the differences are between them. I do like your voice on the BCM104.
One thing I don't understand is why Spotify uses the 705 in practically every one of its studios and for every original podcast. It's a peculiar choice since many of the studio users often lack the proper technique. Do you think there might be a partnership between Spotify and Neumann?

I think the BCM 705 is best limited to folk who know how to use it and have the discipline to do so - that means close, because if you step off it, even slightly, you lose the warmth. There is tiny margin for error which means it’s basically restricted to folk who know what they’re doing. Not the RU-vidr bouncing about their bedroom 😂. I think it takes compression nicely. But, as you demonstrate, there are many mics much cheaper that can do a similar job for less. Build quality is outstanding, I’ve held onto mine because I like the design and it does sound pretty good clean. 😀
Every other mic just shows how ugly that Neumann thing sounds. Expensive and bad. By the way, nothing beats that black RE20, though I like the Dynacaster too.
I think with Neumann you are paying a premium for the brand and heritage, but with some of their mics you’re getting an insanely good sound. KMS105, TLM49, U87, U67. Those are all mics I love. This is their dive into dynamics and it only really works if you want that mid focused and smooth sound. I want to really try the 104 though because looking at the FR graph it looks like it should sound VERY different.
@@Podcastage2if only I lived in the USA, I could have lent you a 104. Although the same form factor as the 705 you are right in that they sound quite different. I really like the 104 for spoken word, (even over my u87ai).
