Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome | Causes, Pathophysiology, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment
Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS) is a very rare but potentially life-threatening condition that is caused by excessive dopamine (D2 receptor) blockade. Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome can be caused by the rapid increase in dose of a dopamine D2 antagonist or the abrupt withdrawal of a dopamine agonist medication. In this lesson, we discuss the signs and symptoms of NMS, including how it’s diagnosed and how it’s treated.

I developed NMS after being put on monthly haloperidol injection and quetiapine tablets for my schizoaffective disorder, it was horrible I had serious fever, sweating, muscle rigidity, non stop vomiting and more. I was a basket case my muscles were so rigid I couldn't bend to wipe my behind, couldn't feed myself and more. I was urinating on my self, they did all the blood tests and I had no disease organs were okay until the physician diagnosed the NMS and told me to stop taking the anti psychotics that's how NMS left me but it's like my muscles are still abit rigid and I can't run anymore though I used to be a serious basketballer. NMS took a part of me, anti psychotics side effects are horrible

I had neuroleptic malignant syndrome. I was ten days or so on a new antipsychotic when I felt my leg muscles weighed a ton and couldn't walk. The fever floored me like a tsunami. My bed was as if a bath of water from my fever sweat had been poured over it. But I felt too feverish to care. Someone else found me. In the hospital I felt really jolly even though I had pneumonia and soaring ck and heart inflammation. I think mutism was there as I felt I did not want to speak. I am not aware of muscle rigidity but I may have been too woozy to know. I did have a lot of problems getting my blood taken. Nobody could find a vein. At one time, a week after my admission, the nurses had to call five different doctors to try to find a vein. Eventually a phlebotomy practitioner was summoned to find a vein. She did so with ease on the second go but told me I had stiff muscles and that was why nobody could find a vein on me, the muscles were solid like armour. Nobody told me or knew that this was maybe why I had to be jabbed with dozens of needles each time to locate a vein. After two weeks of it I told them to stick the needle in my foot. It did not hurt. Felt sorted for life. I planned to always suggest that in future. But a year later I was back in hosy for a different setback. When I said to use my foot it was agony. So I think the stiff muscles were guarding my foot back when I had NMS. Doctors wanted me to go back on antipsychotics but I refused. I never went on them again. Been years now completely med free. So NMS saved my life in that way. Stuff's poison.

Thank you for sharing your description of what happened to you. I would agree by the sounds of it that the medication was poison for you certainly

If you don't mind me asking, what condition were you given it for? Also, what particular antipsychotic was given? Just curious. Glad you're doing better good sir.

Agreed. This stuff is nasty. I have no idea why these medications were ever approved.

Are these symptoms because of typical antipsychotics or atypical antipsychotics

My brother is paranoid schizophrenic. His meds got changed and he ended up with NMS. When paramedics came out they looked him over and called a doctor out. Its hard to explain, but its as is he had rigomortis but still alive and alert. Once the doctor came out, and after wheeling him into the ambulance he was stuck in intensive care and hooked up to all sorts of machines. They stopped ALL of his meds and after 3-5 days he started to loosen off like the tin man in the wizard of oz. The hospital was excellent, they really knew their stuff and they pinpointed the exact drug that caused it. The drug was not long on the market after years of tests. The hospitals contacted the drug company and they flew their own medical team from germany to UK. The drug went on to help alleviate some of the pains of schizophrenia for millions of people. After 5 years they wanted to try the drug again so they took him into hospital beforehand this time. They thought his body may accept the drug this time. He was on 20 min observation. It didnt work.

IM curious why the doctor didnt mention the lorazeoam challenge orthat NMS can also be caused by certain medical conditions. It certainly is not only found in patienrs on antipsychitics or dopamine antagonist!!!!!

I was drugged with something like this multiple times without being a patient. I live in Northern Europe. I don't know how I'm still alive.
