Two of the most beneficial changes that helped my migraines: (1) No artificial sweeteners (specifically aspartame), and (2) Improving my diet. That's the order in which I did them and they were several years apart. Despite the many claims that aspartame is safe, the compound triggered migraines in me numerous times. My use of aspartame was sporadic, so it took me logging my foods and beverages to pinpoint it as a suspect. About a year after removing the few items in my diet that contained aspartame, I inadvertently ingested aspartame some at a friend's house. It was within around 20-30 minutes later that I noticed the signs of an oncoming migraine. I had a full-blown migraine.
This was one of the best, succinct summaries of migraine relief medications and devices that I have seen. Excellent analysis of the actual data on migraine reduction. I am happy to know the Eletriptan (Relpax) prescription I’ve been taking for years is still the top tier for migraine relief. I also own a Cefaly device and will try that again for migraine prevention. I am encouraged that this video suggests it could result in a 20% - 30% reduction in migraine pain days. Any reduction in migraine days is very welcome! Thank you for this clear and helpful presentation!
Thanks for choosing this topic today. It is very helpful to understand this. From the experience of a friend of mine who had migraines for a while, After he donated blood regularly and returned to his normal life without taking any of the treatments you mentioned or resorting to the usual medications.
Very pleased with this video!!! Just what i needed!! My MS specialist prescribed amitriptyline at bedtime it worked wonders and i slept great!!! I was hesitant bc its an antidepressant and the Weight gain it caused. So we decided to switch to nortriptyline i kept having headaches 2 almost 3 days a week. Switched back to amitriptyline and I feel great!
I stopped taking Amitriptyline two months ago and since then migraines have become more frequent. While I was on Amitriptyline I had them once every 14 days, now it is once a week and can last up to 3 days. So I plan to visit the neurologist again and try to manage them, also I think lifestyle changes are important.
I have MS and also a migraine sufferer. My MS specialist prescribed Candesartan for my migraines (a med usually prescribed for high blood pressure) and it has helped a lot.
Thank you for this video! I have horrible migraines and use both Naratriptan and Eletriptan (not simultaneously) and the Eletriptan especially causes severe weakness the next day (worsens my usual MS issues w/ walking, etc). Right now I'm caught in the dreaded rebound headache cycle and neuro prescribed topiramate, but I'm scared of the potential for mood changes as I'm already hardly keeping it together. Not sure if that is a common issue though. I've had success in the past w/ the elimination diet, so I'm gong to try that along with magnesium oxide and hope for the best. 🤞
Which migraine treatment does not cause dizziness for patients with chronic vertigo? Do the sprays cause dizziness? Are vestibular migraines treated the same way? By neuros or an ENT?
Ajovy has been a godsend for me. I tried so many options over the years (have had migraines since childhood), and they became chronic after age 20. Tried 3 anti depressants. Made me depressed, no migraine relief. 4 anti consultants (no relief, terrible side effects). By age 35~ I was having 25+ migraine days a month. Tried Botox and was worse! Finally Ajovy, and within days, migraines gone! Now, I have been on Ajovy 8 months, and have had 5 migraine days, Sumatripan aborted each one. Medical marijuana is another big help when I feel a headache coming on. Cambia is another medication which helps to abort migraines for me.
Thanks for the suggestion but I primarily make videos about multiple sclerosis on this channel. For people with hemicrania continua who don't improve with indomethacin (the standard treatment), there are alternatives such as topamax and amitriptyline.
Thank you for the video. I learned a lot about these medications. I've been taking Fioricet with codeine for years and it helped me with the pain but my migraines got frecuently so my Doctor gave Propanolol to try it. I'm not sure it's helping me yet. I understand that l have to take it for at least one month.
