I know you're a big baseball fan so when you go to these topics I understand totally. I kind of like it when you cover other topics from time to time also. Have a great day.

I am not a baseball player but this is so relatable to my own experiences as a violinist. Not sure why performing musicians never talk about it but we definitely can suffer from what sports people call the “yips”. I know I did.

Yes. Task-specific dystonia is common in musicians.

I recommend having online treatment with James Hymers. It's the only thing that has fixed my yips. It's a horrible affliction. All the best, Trent

Hi Dr. Beaber, I just discovered your page and I'm enjoying videos like this one and when you make videos of people of interest. Please continue to make them. Thank you!

Up until 5 minutes ago, I'd never heard of Yips and oh boy, this got me thinking. I can remember like it was yesterday how, quite often, when I was a child (age around 10 and up I'd guess) where I wanted to run or jog and my legs just wouldn't do it. My brain knew just what to do, but my legs just wouldn't. And I never knew why this was happening and I didn't know if anyone else ever experienced this. I only saw this when I was trying to run or jog. In nothing else. Which is even odder because I used to ice-skate, but never had a problem on the ice. It was only when running or jogging for fun or excersize. So I'm glad you mentioned that it's not only something sport players suffer from, but anyone can get it. Thank you for this, very informative video.

I found this very interesting. Learning more about non MS neurological conditions is very acceptable for me, especially if they are sports related or related to the activities of daily living. Keep up the good work!

Very interesting!! Thank you for posting 🙂 Usually (of course) I listen for help with MS but it’s good to broaden the angle of view and I guess somewhere along the way it’s all interrelated. This video reminded me of “neurones that fire together, wire together” & it’s counterpart “fire apart, wire apart” 😎

Great video! I just decided to get back into golf since my diagnosis of MS. I want to say I had TSD causing my yips but I know I just wasn’t a very good golfer, but I love the sport. I am going to try changing my swing!

I like the random videos on other topics too. I went through the 'Yips" when I was playing baseball in college. Had a bad injury and never recovered after it. I could throw just fine in practice but in a game the nerves were too much. I thought it was cool that Bard was able to come back like he did.

Thanks for sharing. Daniel Bard actually made the all-start team, so it is quite a comeback.

Thank you for this. I am a drummer and have been touring for 30 years with a famous band. I have lost control of my right bass drum foot. It’s not Performance anxiety because it’s the same in practice. I have been playing the show with my left foot. Surprisingly with amazing accuracy. Most drummers are shocked at this! My Brain will not let my foot do what it supposed to do. All kinds of muscle tension happens when I try and twitches and locks up? It’s very disruptive ? Regular activities nate not affected at all, running , surfing, skating boarding ect …
@DrBrandonBeaber
@DrBrandonBeaber Год назад
Are you able to play correctly by modifying the position of your left foot? This is a clue in favor of task specific dystonia. You could try placing something under your heel or changing the angle of your leg. I hope it gets better.
@scottkay8810
@scottkay8810 Год назад
@@DrBrandonBeaber thank you very much for responding ! I have not found a position that works. It only works at a very slow tempo, as if I’m retraining it. I’m using my left foot to teach my right foot what to do by repetition on patterns . Slowly. I’ll tape something under my heel, that’s a good idea. It will feel foreign and will probably force me into a new technique, but I will certainly try that. Thank you very much.

I am a golfer. This past year i suffered from the yips when it came to short shots, pitch shots, touch shots. Couldn't do it. Always grounded the club and the ball would go like a foot. That makes u want to wrap your iron around the nearest tree.

I have had task specific dystonia as a result of having to type a limited character set speedily under pressure. The description of movement stuttering and spasming applied to what I experienced. Involuntary quivering and spasming expanded from hands and forearms up the arm into the shoulders and back. I had to change the positions of my hands and tools, anI also had to modify the rhythm of movement repeats. I also had to build rest periods into my movement work.

Thanks for sharing heather. "Typist's cramp" is a task-specific dystonia which has been reported.
@HeatherQuinn
@HeatherQuinn 2 года назад
@@DrBrandonBeaber the dystonia went beyond cramping and stuttering. It seemed to be brain related very directly, because my hands would want to do multiple repeats of the same character, or skip entire blocks of characters as if they had disappeared from my vision momentarily. As a computer programmer, writing code, the character set used is smaller than the standard alphabet set. Also, the groups of characters that comprise quote unquote words are shorter.

I first heard of "the yips" when the end of the successful career of the snooker player Stephen Hendry. I am struggling with the same issue in my snooker where I get down to take a shot, I feather the cue repeatedly but every time I pull the cue back to take the stroke I can't do it and I go back to feathering and then I am stuck in a loop. Normally I would feather, pull back, pause and then stroke the cue through the white ball. It has to be performance anxiety because it only happens on certain shots.

I think the main reason behind it,at least for throwing a baseball is psychological,like just thinking about it too much you loose confidence.By thinking about it so much you basically loose the muscle memory that allows you to just throw it freely and instead the thoughts and lost confidence takes over.

This is the first time I've heard the word "The Yips". I assume that "The Yips" can also occur in E-sports (like FPS games) too. I feel like I might have experienced something similar to 'The Yips' while playing games on my PC

It would be interesting to do a video of professional athletes with MS. Three I know of are/were Jimmy Huerta (Olympic medalist in skiing in the sixties), current NASCAR driver Trevor Bayne, and NHL goalie Josh Harding whose career was cut short due to MS.
