I've used this principle throughout my life with significant success. Especially now at age 70, I look around at people my age, especially men, and the fear of becoming that immobile and decrepit pushes me in the gym 4 days a week like no other kind of motivation! Despite not weight training until age 30, guys in their twenties ask me if I was a former powerlifter. For me that's so funny because I'm tall and thin and was never very strong in my youth.

I actually have found this to be true. I’ve used this tactic and it’s helped me get out of a lot of tough situations. It teaches you i don’t want to do this but I have to to continue on. It teaches you your motivation is not reward but responsibility to yourself and everyone around you to do what’s right to survive.

Damn I like this guy. I'm 32 yo now and I'm a mess, but everything he's promoting is true by my experience. Motivation and strive to do things doesn't grow well on the rewards small or big, it's more about the state and process, when you're in. Considering the point of the short, yeah, every time I got better in life, is when I was avoiding the shitty future.

This is so true. I joined the Army at 19 and as soon as I got to my duty station, I was told we are going to war. I was in a infantry company. I was skinny and weak. I foreshadowed all the scary shit I was going to go through. Nothing in the world motivated me more to get stronger than this. Pre-deployment, I went from 135 lbs to 185lbs with 9% body fat in 1 year. Then I came home from deployment a year later and to say that I am grateful is an understatement.

It makes sense because when you have a task or goal in front of you with a cushion of time it's human nature to procrastinate, whereas when you're behind or on the cusp of time people tend to be more productive. But how you manage that time crunch is what separates people. Having that "from behind" mentality from the start is a good concept.

Thank you for the insight. I never thought of this before but it might be a part of why I have been successful in my graduate studies. For example, I've always been terrified of public speaking so the fear of embarrassment and failure of not knowing my shit during seminars always made me work hard. The self doubt in my writing always creeps in as well. While the stress can be overbearing at times, I think that fear of failure or shame has contributed to my success.
