You can thank Jim Mars hof Las Vegas ( well known car dealer) for revitalizing many of these smaller towns and saloons. My father (Glenn Wheeler Hildreth) owned the Knights of Pithious (sp) hall in Virginia City where he maintained an antique store and his domicile for many years. He was responsible for the resurrection of many historic buildings across Nevada. And, one time president of the Nevada Historical Society and caretaker of Mark Twain's effects.
I was married at the Silver Queen in Virginia City in 2002, Since divorced but it's nice to see this place once again. If you like this type of town, and you are anywhere near Arkansas, you must visit Eureka Springs.
I was born in Tulsa but we moved to this area as a kid and absolutely loved it. I am still in Nevada today and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Thanks for sharing!
The summer of 71, I was 16 and spent my summer vacation in Gardnerville, NV. Worked a swing shift at Harvey's Buffet line and made a friend who happened to live in VC. @2:05 there are 2 houses on the left, a blue one with the flag flying and a yellow house. My friend lived in the yellow house, which I visited at least a dozen times that summer. Nevada's legislature was in session only 6 months every other year then and 71 was an off year, so Carson City and VC were virtual ghost towns. Imagine walking the VC "main" street without all of the flags, banners and signs cluttering up the buildings. Without brightly painted buildings and store fronts it reminded me of a street scene from "Gunsmoke", except for the asphalt road. The Bucket of Blood interior, where my friend's mother worked, wasn't painted all white and clean looking. Dark walls, uneven floor, low interior lighting with only what light came in through the front entrance made it seem like you actually transported back to the late 1800s. What you see today is almost a Disney characterization of what Virginia City once was.
These videos are cool. I live in St George, UT, grew up in Carson City where I met my wife, and was born in Elko. We pass through Tonopah twice a year when we visit home. You hit them all, very cool!
Carson city looks to be the town of dreams almost perfection, especially those white picket fences ,houses well kept ,good size sections , reminds one of the older TV shows when life was different, eben though they were filmed in studio sets and streets ,all this thinking of life perfect, then one wakes up and faces reality.
Have been to so many places across the country that are on the National Register of Historic Places. This one my husband and I will have to visit and add to my list. Thank you for the tour ...
I like how informative you are and how you spread the info throughout the video, rather than giving it all to us at once lol. I'm into architecture, so it's cool that you emphasize on some of the buildings. Take care.
I LOVE Oatman ! The donkey haven town ! My brother and I found it accidentally driving home on Route 66 ! It was such a fabulous surprise ! Joe….you need to do a video on Oatman in AZ. Any place in the Sierra mountains is breath taking ! Can’t wait for your west coast videos !!!!!
I LOVE rural Nevada (and New Mexico). The the intro of this video reminded me of the time when I lived in Vegas, for a few months, and loved when we got outside of Vegas to beautiful places like that. I will probably make more comments as I see the small towns but this gave me a strong flashback to 11 years ago and a very happy one. Thank you
Lived in Northern Nevada, 20 miles south of CC for 25 years. It was a trully wonderful place then. Traffic held up all the time for cattle drives and stores named like "Carson Valley Mercantile" and "Perry's Dry Goods" sold items used by "REAL LIVE COWBOYS". Definitely not the rhinestone kind we have now. The nearest doctor was in CC. Then about 1980 we finally got a doc that came to town once a week. Miss it a lot. All gone now but not forgotten. Thanks for bringing back a bunch of wonderful memories.
Great share. I lived in Southern Nevada 17 years, I came to really love Nevada. Crushed to have to leave. It was 1992 - 2009 (Priceless experiences). I traveled nationally with my job, and "going home was always so sweet!". ... particularly from Kansas City in January ... lol
Well you opened the eyes of those who have only flown to Vegas and back. Didn't know Nevada had mountains or hills. Feels like West Virginia. And pristine little towns.
Very cool video,I grew up in Reno area and we spent a lot of time visiting Virginia City ,Carson City and surrounding towns and was always a blast ,alot of history and all the historic buildings and community 's ,thanks for the video ,brings back a lot of fun memories
Thanks for the awesome video as always - I loved visiting Virginia City as a kid, I've always been fascinated by its history. A word of advice from an Oakland resident since you mentioned coming here soon: keep your car doors locked at all times and do not leave anything in your car; your car will be a target for bippers (auto burglars) due to its out of state plates. Looking forward to your upcoming NorCal and Oregon videos and travel safe!
Hi to both of you. Have to say, Highway 395 from Reno to Lone Pine following the Eastern Sierras is beautiful!! Along the way you pass Genoa, an old Mormon settlement, that claims to have the oldest continuous bar in Nevada. Be safe out there.
Joe i really enjoy your channel. im so happy that yall have made a success out of it. i love to see people succeed. ive been with yall for a long time. im so glad to see the channel growing. i can see this series going on until you get too old and cranky to do it anymore lol. i miss the mileage feature of your truck/suv
If I could live anywhere in the world, I think it would be Virginia City. I cannot wait to visit. I wish I had time to visit last time, but Reno was a really cool place.
My family lived in Carson City when I was a teenager in the mid and late 70s, my little sister was born there. We were one of 4 African American families at the time. The husband of a neighbor of ours did maintainance for the Bunny Ranch, one Saturday he was called in for an emergency and with my parents permission I went with him. Got to conversate with a couple of the ladies there, they were really nice, it wasn't busy that time of day . 🤣 I often hung out at Stewart Indian School and Carson Indian Colony with friends .
Great video as usual. Love everywhere out in the southwest. Makes me more homesick every time. LoL. Especially liked Virginia city. Been there but it’s been quite a while. Thanks guys appreciate the ride along. And as usual the stats and interesting facts that you give every time. Have a great day off you deserve it.
Hi Joe Thanks for this awesome video. Wow! Very well preserved history. @10:40 I could see a rotten wodden support that added to the vintage feel of the video. Best.
Excellent video with beautiful narration. The description of the towns , their statistics and the glimpses of history makes it remarkable. I enjoy watching these videos.
Wow, this is fantastic Joe and Nic, really enjoying your trip out west. I’ll probably never be able to go to your bringing them to life. Thank you very much.
Another great video, Joe and Nic. Now wishing we’d gone a bit further west on our recent road trip!!! Virginia City and Carson City both look like great places to visit. Odd that you made no mention of the TV show, Bonanza (unless you did and I missed it).
I admire both of you for doing this and traveling through the US....I caught one of your videos doing RI, and part of Mass. Surprised you didn't travel to the Cape. You were not that far away from Plymouth Ma. Both my wife and I plan to do the same in our RV but after our grandson starts school...Right now we take care of him while our daughter works. Couple more years. I was station at Fort Hood back in 1976 but Texas is BIG especially traveling through. Thanks and good luck..
An awesome video, as always. Both of these towns have a great atmosphere, with so many amazing buildings. I love the wooden sidewalks !! Lots of beautiful homes, and I love traditional picket fences, so pretty !! Thanks so much, Joe and Nic, always enjoyable.😊💚
This is the first chance I've had to sit down and watch you guys. I've had a crazy week. The house on Minnesota st. is going for $400,000. It's another beauty. This is a very beautiful town. Thanks for sharing and happy travels.
The beauty of all your trips to the different town is it s all on video so when your retire back to a home you can still enjoy all the towns you went too. and we also get to enjoy seeing every town Thanks
Wonderful video. Been a long time since I’ve been to Virginia City, but I love that town. Always wanted to go since my days of watching Bonanza. Thanks again!
Hey Joe, I’m so glad you loved Virginia City. I knew you wouldn’t be disappointed. I have taken a few pics from the very spot you began the video and the views are tremendous. I was also hoping you would visit the Bucket of Blood and you did not disappoint. I hope you were able to see some of the museums in Virginia City as they have some rather interesting items. Still waiting for the Reno video, but I can wait. I hope you’re going to make it down the loneliest highway in your next video.
Thanks for the tour of Virginia City! In 2004 I took my friend to his Blinded Veterans' Convention in Reno and we explored the whole area, including Virginia City, Tahoe, and even the Donner Party museum. He loved riding with me and I'd explain everything I was seeing to him. Unfortunately, there was no place to park in Virginia City, and seeing he also had a steel rod through his leg, we couldn't walk that far into the town. So I'm happy to see the town and the neighborhoods up in the hills through your eyes. Thanks!
Hey Joe and Nic Another amazing video as always. I absolutely loved going through tge two cities with you, but my favorite had to have been Virginia City. The buildings through downtown were simply amazing. You wont find nothing like that in Oklahoma. At least not where I live. Always feel blessed to have the opportunity to share your trip with you. Until the next time, take care, stay safe and God bless. Steve in Oklahoma
Wow Virginia city would be my kind of place to live. I’ve always felt like I should have lived in that time period of the 1800s. Thanks for the great video!!!
Thanks again Joe. Fantastic video. What I would give to visit that gorgeous town. Like you I love the wild west. You are so lucky to be able to visit all these wonderfuly places in the great U.S.A. Anne in Galway Ireland.
can't wait for your tour of California. there are so many beautiful small towns in the central valley of CA. I grew up in Esparto, located near the Capay Valley on the western side of the Central Valley. Our area is known for almond production and for hosting the annual Almond Festival.
I'm going to the Casino with Nic :) Love your channel and your content. *Brilliant idea for a youtube channel - Thank you for letting us travel along with you on your adventures and for teaching us along the way. *Can't wait for the Northern Cali vlog - I lived in Northern Cali for 3 yrs and it is absolutely beautiful!!! *There is a small town named Cool, CA - it is very pretty but strange
Very cool. The rural parts of the American West are still wild. Neighbors help each other, wave when they drive by, and everyone has at least one firearm. A lot less crime, that way. Thanks for the Nevada tour!
I grew up in Reno. My great great grandfather was the Managing Editor or the "Territorial Enterprise" newspaper in Virginia City. Mark Twain was a writer at the paper at that time. Twain and my grandfather, left together to start another paper in the bay area. Mark Twain wrote his obituary. I have a copy!
Great fun as always, and I'm looking forward to the videos from northern California and the western Oregon & Washington State towns. I've been road tripping around the later two states over the last couple of years, discovered some new favorites, and can't wait to see your own discoveries. Safe travels!
Carson City is amazing. I lived there for 5 years. I miss it terribly. Great job showing us Virginia City, and Carson City. Oh, if you drive to 606 Mountain Street, you'll drive right up to the Governors Mansion. Every year, I used to take my daughter trick or treating there. It's a great city.
Thanks for another video of cities in Nevada. The capital building was beautiful in Carson City. Look forward to video on other cities.. Nicole, I'm an old JD girl. My friends back in the day would gift me JD at Christmas, it would last till my birthday in July....lol
