@MrDeerbomb
@MrDeerbomb 2 месяца назад
@@clowderrrnot offended, but some people in indonesia generally want to be seen as modest or able to take care of themselves when visiting others. Leaving a bit of food or not finishing your drink entirely kinda means "I'm good, I don't really need this food/drink". For me, it's a stupid tradition and I actually see more and more people, even one generation above me, admit that they don't like that too. That tradition still somewhat exists in less urbanized places (ie. poor people in village), other than that you don't really have to worry about it. Even so, you have to know your place. - Leaving food as someone who's from poorer background when visiting a rich person house means "I'm good, this food doesn't amaze me". - Leaving food as someone who's rich when visiting a poor person house means "This food doesn't taste as good as what I usually eat". All foreigners are basically deemed richer than locals, so you should always clean the plates to respect their foods

I'm from Indonesia and this is the first time I've heard about the don't finish your food rule. In the ancient culture of Indonesia, especially Java and Bali, we believe in the goddess of rice, and to honor the goddess of rice, we are taught to always finish the rice until the last grain. Indonesians are very appreciative of guests, especially foreign guests. If there is a specific culture rule we don't expect guests to follow that rule (if you make a mistake we know you didn't mean it), we will only be offended if the guest is from the same culture (because we will think you did it on purpose to insult). The most important thing to us is that you are friendly and accept being reprimanded (If you are reprimanded it means you have made a fatal mistake, usually religious).

I wonder if it’s different in urban areas of slavic countries. Most slavs I meet that can’t speak English never smile, but I met a girl who knew broken English from Moscow that was extremely friendly.

As an Irish person, I’ve only ever sat in the back of taxis. I’m from Dublin and haven’t been in other counties too often so I can’t confidently say what it’s like in other parts, but I’ve genuinely never heard of that 😭 Could possibly be a thing in the more country areas, but I’m not sure

Sincerity is highly valued in Russia, which is why it is not customary for us to smile "out of politeness". You smile when you are genuinely happy and cheerful. We are not always gloomy, with friends we always laugh and smile, because we are genuinely glad to see them. A Russian appreciates it more if you are honest with him than if you try to put on an insincere smile. And how is it in your country?
