Been doing this for years with all varieties of onion leeks etc. Works really well. And the thing I would add to this is instead of digging up the onion then replanting the root vase, I use a very sharp knife to carefully cut the onion out leaving the base in place for it to grow the next batch. It doesn't always work but I'd say 8 out of 10 times it's successful. And most of the time you get twice the amount too. Definitely worth following the instructions in this video. I've even tried doing this growing the onions in nothing but water with just the roots sat in the water and the growing onion raised above it. I've managed to grow some onions doing this, but quite small. I just need to adjust any additives or feed I use until I get it right. This should result in bigger onions once I get it right. This video also works for garlic.

@Dr. OBi's Garden I would love to be able to set up a camera that takes footage over the whole growing time and upload it to show it works. It wouldn't surprise me if somebody already has, but I've not come across any yet. I think the easiest one to do are spring onions, which grow a lot quicker and after 3 weeks with the roots dangling in a glass of water they will get a good 3 or 4 inches of growth, that's without even planting them yet! Hydroponics seems like a good way to grow onions, I've seen a lot of TV shows where they have vast water farms with things like onions lettuces etc planted through a floating 'oasis' type material with onky the roots sat in the water, with fish living in the water to both clean the water and add nutrition back in to it, a bit like why they add fish species in to rice paddy fields for similar reasons. Like I said, I've managed to grow a few smaller onions in nothing but water. There's lots of different ways to grow things, and it's only by experimenting that you find these ways. I only discovered this way shown in the video to regrow onions because after I threw some onion bottoms away in to my compost heap, after a few days the ones on top had grown really long roots where it was sat in the damp (it had been raining a lot) and the shoots had grown out of the cut end, so I retrieved them and replanted them and it worked. I told my dad a few years later about this and found he had done it a lot himself over the years. Definitely worth trying. You can do this very same thing with pineapple crowns (the top bit) once cut off but it takes around 2 years or so to bare fruit. I've managed to get the initial plants growing for about a year but then we had a big storm one night that knocked roof tiles on to my greenhouse and ruined them! So I haven't tried again yet. I'd love to try it again. A lot of my garden isn't grown from bought seeds, I like starting my growings from shop/store bought items. My initial tomato plants are from various varieties of tomatoes I bought for salads cooking etc. Some I even grew from seeds I took from a burger I bought that had a very tasty tomato on it, so I collected the seeds from it and planted them. Now every year I harvest the seeds from my own grown tomatoes from the previous year and I get lots of very tasty tomatoes. I have a melon wall where I grow my melons all from a few store bought melons. My peppers all from peppers bought in Aldi or Asda. Even my lemon trees came from a chunk of lemon that I got on a Greek kebab from a takeaway. It had 3 seeds in it and I managed to get 2 to grow. My strawberry plants all come from punnets I've bought. The only seeds I buy are ones I really want or that are hard to get here, such as thornless raspberries and blackberries because I don't want my grandkids hurting themselves when picking them. Grafting is something else I'm getting in to. I have an apple tree that last year i grafted two new apple varieties and a pear variety to, which all seem to have taken because they have growth but won't know about any fruit until later in the year, and this year I'm going to be grafting a few varieties of plums, peaches, apricots and cherries on to my Victoria plum tree, the one I really want to grow are green gages. Hopefully they will take well. 1 tree growing many fruits still blows my mind, and takes up no more space than the one original tree.
@chiomaumunna4832
@chiomaumunna4832 Год назад
What additives do you use please?
@JacknVictor
@JacknVictor Год назад
@@chiomaumunna4832 I just use a mixture of home compost, well rotted horse manure, fish bone and standard tomato feed plus rain water from a water butt collected from my greenhouse roof, I place the compost fish bone tomato feed mixture in to the water butt, let it sit for a few months then use it to water my garden plot and my greenhouse contents. I do this about once a month and just leave it to the rain, or at dry times, just a going over with the water from the hosepipe, and that seems to be enough. I'm going to try adding drops if this mixture to the onions I grow just in a water bath. You just need to make sure only the roots ar submerged and not the onion. Itself. A good thing to use is the oasis stuff the florists use for flower arranging ir a piece of packaging polystyrene. You need to get the roots growing by placing the onion cutting in a shallow tray if water for a week or so, then when the roots are a few inches long, make a hole in the oasis ir polystyrene and gently pull the roots through the hole, and sit on top of a container of water, add a few drops of the feed from the water butt and let nature do its thing. I just leave mine in the green house but you could place some perspex or glas or something to cover it and leave it in the garden if you wanted. Normal varieties of onions and leeks etc will take the same amount if time to grow, but spring onions/scallions seem to grow very quick using these methods. Whether growing in the garden or in water, the trick is to not pull up the onions, but to cut them away from where they are planted, leaving the rooted base behind to grow again and again. Perpetual onions.

That was in 2019 and I am still developing the garden. In the original 10 year old garden if I threw down seed or planted it grew. Not anymore. The first year I tried sweet potato slips they all failed. The last two years I've had slips but all I get is roots no potatoes. Gardening is the easiest when watching gardening videos.

I have some onion ends sitting in the plastic container from store bought mushrooms for a few weeks waiting for me to get around to putting them in water. It is cold here in the 40's during the day and the room where they are kept is only heated to 45 degrees unless I am working in the room. I have done this before. Saved ends and didn't get to it right away and they usually shrivel dry up but that was during warm weather.. But not all of them this time so maybe it's the cooler temps. I noticed today out of 12 ends 6 are dried up, the other 6 have sprouted. The ones on top of the others not against the plastic have sprouted. Just placing the onion in soil may work.

I think you can transplant it directly to a garden. I am currently trying it out now and it works. I live in grow zone 3, so we have lots of snow snd temp can reach -40C here. I first tried his bottled method. I tried to stop the onions from sinking, and they did. But they are rotted out. So I started a new batch. But because I wanted to start all of them alike, everytime I cut the bottoms during cooking, I saved them in a zip lock bag and put tiny water in the bag, just to prevent dehydration. I kept the bag by the door of the fridge. This went on for about 3 weeks to 1 month. When I checked them before planting them out, they were already showing bumps and bulges. I transplanted them into a pitting mix in a bowl together, and they are sprouting green leaves now. Very few are rotten and mouldy, but majority are sprouting. I am doing all this inside the house. I am not using any special heat and my house is not the warmest in winter. I just put them close to a bright window for sunlight during the day. That it. We have a short growing season, so starting now for me is good. I will follow it and probably post the update. Thank you for the video. Very helpful.

I just got lazy since it is hot and the fungus and rain and mud. plus it's itchy. I'll get basins, and more containers. I better have mask on coz doctor says i be careful i got weird long lines in my lungs from soil, i got bronchietis. my tomatoes died from leaf blight and end rot. @@pappapappi9177 I am living in a village gated community. This is not an open space. The soil I am planting on is not mine. It is a vacant lot of somebody that hasn't been used. They know I am planting on it and they are fine with it. So I don't have any right to fence it. The soild is not for farming, it is a red clay soil with so many rocks. It doesn't grow much. It gets dry and becomes a cement but will get very sticky when it's rainy. It is acidic and no nutrition. I can only plant a bit like papayas, and I did manage to plant tomatoes, chilis. The squash was too tiny and the powdery mildew destroyed it. The tomatoes got destroyed by leaf blight and end rot. There's too many insects all sorts of insects and fungus and termites. It's too eexpensive to buy pesticides and to make it rich soil is very impossible. You need to keep taking tons of garbage in wet market but i don't have vehicle. Eveyone is taking advantage of the fruits they all keep taking, you cannot stop them. It's hard since I am watering it by pails, I keep going there maybe 100x a day when it is summer time. But now I stop doing it coz I am getting sick and it is not worth it. PLus I cannot sell the fruits the market doesn't want it. I harvested lots of papayas like maybe 100kilos last time. Now only a few were left because the storm killed it. I am now just content with a few that I need, I don't like to plant and take care of more since people will just take it and I will get tired while they are just stealing. They even steal flowers. I planted flowers on the sidewalk to make it pretty but they stole it too. I also got burnt under the sun and develop sunburns and sunspots. age spots. It's not worth it and I will just kill myself. SO now I only have a few trees of papayas and bananas, which they keep stealing. The construction workers of upper side keeps stealing it. and some neighbors will also keep taking. I don't take oit seriously now, I don't take care of it. People likes to take, will watch and do nothing but will take if they can.
