We had to leave our German Shepherd alone inside the house one day. When we got back we found he had broken the window, the screen in the window. and he was sitting on the front steps waiting for us to return.

He probably had to go potty, and didn't want to go in the house! One of ours figured out how to open the front door while we were at work one day, and our surveillance cams showed that he bolted straight to the veggie garden for a pee... next day, I got a visit from the spca: someone had reported that we locked our dogs outside midwinter, and the breed we have is bred to withstand -40 and lower out in the field, without shelter! We started engaging the deadbolt, but this clever, 100# 5-mo puppy figured that out, also - after he tried eating through the wall! He then figured out how to operate the crank-open windows, which he had only seen me operate maybe twice, since we only installed it in the fall...got home one day, lock lever was in the unlocked position, and the crank handle was on the floor! Listen, when a pup's gotta pee, he's gotta pee!

I'm 75, retired, and stay home everyday, only leaving for dental/drs appt, grocery shopping and going to church. So I am with my two Jack Russell Terriers most all the time. One is about 8yrs old and the little one is 3-4 yrs old. I sit out on the back patio and let them do whatever they want to, but, usually they stick close to me. But have been known to go and check-out the neighbor's yard from time-to-time. I really hate the time away from them because our little "pack" spends so much time together. Sometimes when I have a Drs appt at The VA, 60 miles away, the away time can get to 5+ hrs. I don't like it but it can not be helped. Whenever I go somewhere I have them sit down and i inform them what i have to do, tell them I love them and will be back as soon as possible.

My Jack Russell TERROR was 15 when I had to put her down Last November. I still haven't gotten over her. Hardly at all. She's been my Sole Companion for 15 years. I'm 63 years old so I believe I'm too old to responsibly get another pet/dog. I don't have the money for Vet Bills (emergencies) and I highly doubt I'm going to be around another 10-15 years .. if even 5. So my doggy/pet days are over ... sadly. Enjoy your Terriers while you've got them, friend. Cherish every moment because it's going to be a painful day when you have to part company.

It's the same with me, only my girl is a Pit mix; she is my best buddy. We rescued her 13 years ago when she was a yearling. After my husband passed she became my full-time protector. If i have to leave for appointments she seems to know ahead of time and settles down by the door to wait for my return. She is always by myside

Recently I spent two stays in hospital. My dog is a rescue with a terrible history of abuse. As a result he can be a touch reactive. GSDRescue - who'd assured me that should I adopt Wooki they had friends who could kennel him should I ever need it - when I asked for help GSDR sent me a one line response "Sorry can't help". Disgraceful. Wooki is a very confident dog but is terrified of storms. Concerned that he might jump the fence and come looking for me, I felt that I had little choice but to keep him locked in our home and escape hospital once a day to let him out and feed him. Of course he was over the moon the first time that I came home and it taught him that although I was gone a long time, I would return eventually. I know this by the way he greeted me each day following. A few weeks later I needed an operation. No kennel would accommodate him 😡 So a friend helped me to build a 7' fence around the back door so Wooki had free access to outside. That friend fed him every evening. I was not well enough to visit him until the fourth day and came home on the 9th. Wooki handled my absence really well. There were a few signs in the following weeks where he would lay at the front door whenever I prepared to leave and he'd refuse to move. After a couple of weeks though he settled back into our normal routine. That was the best possible outcome considering the circumstances. However it was a choice of last resort. The risk of Wooki developing separation anxiety was high. Thank you Archangel Ariel for watching over my boy during my absence.

I am currently fostering a GSD whose owner died. I work at a boarding kennel, and a family member parked her there and said ‘find her a home’. We ALL tried GSD Rescue in 5 states. We got ZERO response. I have worked with a lot of rescues throughout my life - worst ever. She stopped eating (never really started actually) and was wasting away, so I brought her home to hopefully get her to eat again. She has lots of allergies but they are manageable but it is keeping potential adopters away 😢. I don’t have a lifestyle or property for her (she loves playing especially in the large yards and training building at the kennel). I hate having to bring her to kennel while I work, spending 8 or more hours in a cage even though I do try to get her out for a walk or playtime. I have finally gotten her to use peepads at home if needed, so some days I leave her home (also in case an adopter has to leave her home alone at any time). Neither situation is ideal for a breed that needs more mental and physical stimulation than I can give her. But before I worked at the kennel, I never boarded my dogs ever. Neighbors were paid for daycare/overnight sleepovers, whatever, and always left tv on.

Absolutely a good idea for many dogs. When we had several big dogs we used gravity flow hog feeders. At first they ate a little extra but they regulated themselves & were never overweight. We worked long hours some days & it was a relief to know our dogs were fed.

When you leave, Don't *'Over Reassure'* your dog in an excessively passive way, that _'"Everything is going to be ok..." ... "I won't be long"..._ et cetera... If you sound anxious or worried they'll pick up on it and you'll probably project your concerns on to your Dog. There's a good chance they'll think you're saying 'Good bye'... The Calmer you are the better it will be for your Dog.

I leave the radio on and open the blinds, my dog loves to lay down and look out the window, like a cat. I got lucky and she doesn't have separation anxiety. I think the most I've left her alone was five hours. I usually take her with me everywhere I go but now that it's getting hotter can't keep her in a hot car when I run into the store. But you should see her when I leave her in the car(in cooler weather). She doesn't make a peep, just sits there quietly. She doesn't even get hyper when I come back. She is a good dog that way

We have had MANY dogs over the years, including 10 Danes and 5 Goldens. Most were when we lived on the farm, and none have had anxiety issues. My current Dane is now 7, and handles my erratic schedule and sometimes long days away from him just fine, even to 12 hours. He checks out my clothes as I am getting dressed in the morning, and knows if he will be alone or not. If I will be leaving, he goes to the living room and lays down. If I put on yard work clothes, he gets bouncy. If I start packing, he knows he gets to go in the camper, and becomes a velcro dog. I recently adopted a rescue cat, which he appreciated. He is happier now.

I got a 2-3 year old English pointer from a rescue shelter 6 months ago, with horrible separation anxiety. I'm not sure what the previous owners did to her, but she clearly has some problems because of it, which we're slowly working through. She abhors kennels and hates whenever I leave the house. I've slowly realized she can be left out of the kennel just fine, and that kneeling down to her level, talking to her, explaining where I'm going, and telling her I'll be back, has helped her quite a lot. I can attest that she loves to look out of windows, and that teaching her the stay command has helped a lot whenever I leave the house.

My German Shepherd is another rescue with a horrible history of abuse. I had no choice but to leave him at home when I spent over a week in hospital. I'd built a secure fence around the back door so he had access to outside to go toilet. A mate fed him every evening. The thing I realised is that our home is one of the two constants in Wooki's life. Home is familiar. So although I wasn't there, he handled my absence because he was home.

Kennels kinda need to be trained from puppy, for a while. maybe they didn’t crate train her at all. I never did with my dogs at all. I never even had a crate until the 2000’s., and only because she was already trained, (unwanted adoption, but I always do my best) and I was in a small place. So I put her in there when company came over. I’ve had dogs since the 70’s, when I was a teen. Lots of them. Nobody had crates. But I will say, I tell my rescue buddy, I’ll be back! And I do leave the tv on. He seems to know. And he has a crate, it came with him, but the door is open🤷‍♀️ it’s a den, not a prison. I would never crate my dog all day or night. Just when the grandkids are eating lol because hes such a grunge. He doesn’t grab, but omg he’s such a pest

@cherylimeson3006 Please be careful with the toys you leave out. Most of them say not to let your dog chew on them without you watching them. I have heard of dogs choking on chewed off parts of toys, especially the "noise maker" squeaky type toys. They get that piece out of the toy and it can block their airway. That would be a horrible thing to come home to. 😢

I have neighbors with a key to my house so that if something were to happen such as a car accident or if for some reason I'd end up in the hospital they can come in and take care of my dogs. They get fed twice a day we have a routine not exactly the same hour as since I'm retired I sometimes sleep in but I do keep it at pretty regular. My dog had separation anxiety. I broke her of it by going out to the mailbox, locking the front door then coming back ina few minutes later. I did the same with going into my garage. I'd come back I to the house a few minutes later. I then bought Kong balls and loaded them with treats to keep her occupied if I had to go out for longer errands. I also hid treats around the house. She began to relate treats to me going out. I took a few months to break the anxiety but it worked. I can be gone all day with no issues now.

When I adopted, and brought home my Siberian Husky girl at 1.5 yrs old... the first time I left for a work appt, the next day, and was gone for only 2 hours, I came back and found pee everywhere, an incredibly freaked out, anxious and scared dog, a hole in the hardwood floors that she had scratched near the door, and the door frame itself, almost chewed off completely! :O (It was a shock- the prior owner had mentioned nothing about her Separation anxiety.. ha..) Since I don't believe in putting dogs in locked crates (unless for a medical appt, or something very short term), whenever I went to a work for a few hours/day, I brought her to a local doggy day care place, where the dogs got to run around and play with each other freely. I did this for a few wks, and then found the amazing book by Dr. Patricia McConnell, " I'll Be Home Soon: How to treat and prevent Separation Anxiety". Dr. McConnell is a PhD/Animal Behavioralist, and Positive/Humane trainer and author. This is just a small book, but packed with info. Taking things VERY slowly... leaving the house for 1 minute, and coming back. If OK with this, then leaving for 2 minutes and coming back. etc, etc.. If there is a time period where my dog started getting anxious, I would drop it down back to a slightly shorter time until there was no stress again. Then build up slowly again. Dr. McConnell claimed that if your dog can handle an hour alone with no stress, than you're in the clear, and they've learned to trust that you'll always come back. they have beaten their SA, and they can stay home for a normal amount of time by themselves. :) And- it absolutely worked! Only took us about 2 wks, and I had her for the rest of her life, and she never experienced that again. :) (And, NO CRATES, ever!) Best of luck, everyone!

This is our fawn Doberman in my profile pic. He is the velcro dog king but he also is loyal when we are away and loves to work. Before heading to my work, I place blankets on the couch that smell like me, a few clothes I wore recently that smell like me, open the curtains, turn on the fan, put out toys. Here is the most important part for him as a working dog: He understands the commands "Wait" and "Look". Wait tells him I may be awhile, our version of stay. "Look" is the command he learned almost instinctively as one of the most brilliant breeds in the world to "be alert". He immediately runs to the couch, climbs up with his paws on the back of it and starts watching the street through the window with that Doberman guard stare. My profile pic here is an example of him doing this. I praise him up and down, let him know he is an essential part of our family and to Look and watch the house while I am gone. I then quietly leave and wave at him driving away as he sits in the window doing his job while I go to mine. I am not sure how long he does it. I have returned 2 or 3 hours later to find him still in his watch dog position. He does sleep sometimes, suck on his blanket, but he always has his eyes and ears open. He doesn't like me to leave, is happy when I return but by putting him to work I can see in his eyes it gives him purpose and makes the separation bearable. Louie is affectionate to everyone. He will warn though if it is people I do not acknowledge or walking in front of the house. Too much barking, he will be commanded to be quiet but not before I acknowledge or thank him for his work. He gets lots of walking and running time too when I get home. He is a giant baby at 115 to 120 lbs.

Yes! Beagles are definitely revenge oriented. I am on my fourth Beagle, and this one still has to be put in a crate when I leave. My other 3 were fine as long as I didn’t leave a trash can on their level…..

I don't understand why you should leave toys laying around. We keep our dog's toys in a basket. My 2yr old dog always pulls out what he wants. Sometimes he wants to tug o war and sometimes he wants some chew time. He always has access to his basket.
@lynettelim2220
@lynettelim2220 9 дней назад
Yes, we do the same. Our Goldie knows his toys are in a basket, whenever he wants a toy, he goes there to pick one up. Sometimes the area around the basket is littered with his stuff but somehow, they are all in that one area of the house. When he's done playing with the toy in another part of the house, or if I take his toy into my room so he can play there, after he's done, he takes the toy and puts it back in the basket. Time again I've caught him staring at the basket like he's counting his toys and making sure they're all there. LOL.

I am blessed to be able to work from home (where Hershey, a seven year old mini schnauzer, keeps us both company). But as my spouse's caregiver, we have frequent doctor visits. We have a sliding glass door and leave the blinds open for our furry child and the TV on with an animal planet program on; the glass opens to a nice area full of birds, squirrels (that we feed) and people coming & going. She's good about our leaving, but goes nuts when we return. (She knows the sound of our car and doors.) I usually give her a treat for her "good stay" behavior. The three of us make a great pack! Hershy also goes nuts when she realizes we are going on a family trip ("Adventure") and can't wait to hop into the car with us. " 🎵🎶 We're going on an Adventure to see who we can _smell!!_ 🎶🎵 🐕‍🦺 "

We always had 3 dogs at a time. Our last of two passed away last year, leaving one dog, a shepherd. He was doing well, as he was an only dog when the rescue got him and since we are retired and he’s 8 he hung around with us oldies. I walked him in the pasture 2 x a day and let him search for critters. When our kids visited with their large 2 dogs Logan played with them a lot. I checked into doggie day care in our area and now take him 2x a week to play with others. We can watch him play online and he has a great time. So glad I found them. This also is someplace to take him when I have to take hubby to medical appointments.

I’ve had dogs of my own for almost 60 yrs…in the last 20 I’ve been dogsitting in my home. Covid brought a whole new group of dog owners I call “covid dogs”…owners who have never had a pup, got one during covid, loved, then went back to work. Came home and found their couch eaten. Owners scrambling to have their dog looked after. Crate train. It’s a must. No other reason or excuse. Their crate becomes their safe place. “covid dogs” as I call them are the ones the owners haven’t trained properly…and no offence I hope. You just didn’t know. Read, research, and figure out what to do now your poor pup is alone. Crate training! If they sleep for 8 hrs when you do? They can sleep 8 hrs during the day. And they do.

We have a couple who were bred for thousands of years to live outdoors with no shelter, but the ladies are absolute PRISSES!!! If there is even a HINT of rain, they refuse to go out! They've held their bladders for 24 hours and even more, except when I clip on a leash and literally haul them out for potty! Had to boot one out tonight who was refusing due to the rain (they're farm dogs and take shifts, and this one had to go on night duty with her male - not a priss - partner, and it's not like they don't have various shelters to cozy up in, either! ) A helper when it comes to separation anxiety: no dog alone! Speaking from experience, you MUST have a buddy - not just toys or open curtains - if you plan to leave a puppy for extended periods! Learned the hard way with my first dog, a kuvasz. All puppies after her were fine, because they had her when I wasn't home! Newest puppy (decker terrier) had a bottle piglet grow up with her, as well as having the monstrous brutes who not only cared for, but trained her - she, despite her tiny size, is the most confident and self-assured dog I've ever known 😊

Please be careful in what toys you leave out for your dog when they're by themselves! Most of them say right on the tag not to do that. The squeaky ones are the worst because they can chew that "squeaker" out of them and choke on it.

My dog is over 15.Been going to work since he was 13 weeks old. He's fine, well adjusted. It's all about routine. I used to leave the radio on, but he's deaf now. He has his timed pop up bowls. I do adjust the heating and fans. He has the same treat when I go out. I taught him if needs a wee to go in a litre tub in the bathroom so he doesn't hold it too long. He's been so adaptable I couldn't have asked for more.

A couple times when I was in a rush I left my Yorkipoo at my sister’s house and friend’s home without saying “I’ll be back” before I left. Btw, these are her two favorite places in the world to visit, both for the humans and their dogs, her best friends. I was told she was very unsettled in my absence which was not the case other times when they “dog-sit” for her. Thinking about what they said I realized I didn’t say goodbye before leaving. Since then I make sure to give her a quick reassurance and that “I’ll be back”. No problems or separation anxiety since then as long as I do that. Dogs are so smart…I love them!

I purposely make sure my dog has views to the outside when I leave. I leave the door unlocked in case someone else has to let my dog out, in the event I have an unexpected delay.( no one is going to enter unless he knows them) Make sure water bowl is full. I put a dog movie on a few minutes before I leave, and the radio on for when the movie ends ( if I'm not back ) German Shepherd is always happy to see me return.

Sometimes no other choice but to leave the dogs alone at home. When I had only one dog (Chippy) before, when I got back home, I saw some blood on the door and wounds on the paws of my dog, maybe he was scratching the door hard and then I decided to get another one, then one day this one escaped and gave birth to 5 puppies after 2months. That was how I got 7 dogs.

Great videos and so many good advice. Dogs do suffer when they are alone they even suffer more when there is only one. I only realized that when i saw the eyes of my female dog so sad as i was leaving i realized she was suffering. so i rescued a little one who was roaming the estreet all alone and i was told she was straight. When my female dog saw her she was so please and she began teaching her what to do and how to do things because she was a belgian shepherd who are so motherly. As i am a pensionar now i hear my next door dog crying when she is working so i talk to the dog gently and he does calm down.

- Dont leave windows or balcony doors open, too much for the dog to handle on its own. - If you have a big home with many rooms, limit the area for the dog to keep track of by closing doors to unnecessary space not needed for the dogs comfort when alone. - Make sure there's plenty of water, if anything delays you coming back home, water supply is a must for your dogs sense of security (and hydration). - If you can turn off interphone systems and doorbells, this is a good thing to avoid unnecessary anxiety for the dog if anyone should ring on them.

Please please please dont leave your dog alone. You said she already has security issues. She doesnt want acres of land, she wants you and if not you then company and safety. Think of her as a 2 or 3yo child. (A dogs IQ has been said to be around that). She will panic, hurt herself, maybe escape and try to find you and god knows what could happen. Im in a similar situation in that I have a velcro dog, an illness that can recur and no-one to care for my baby. If I had to go into hospital again I would board her at the kennels, for her safety. She would still feel stressed but she'd be safe. PLEASE dont leave her alone.

They MUST NOT be alone for an extended amount of time. Book her in a boarding facility or with a private dog boarder.
