"NEVER drink Champagne from a Flute" | Krug Champagne

Просмотров 5 тыс.

The text message from Carlos read: "Oh mate... if we can get Olivier it will be HUGE!"
The schedule was tight, 20 minutes only, to quiz the sixth generation of the founding family of Krug and it's current Director Olivier Krug. Carlos reminisces on his first experience in France at the vineyard, the incredible bottle of wine he was lucky enough to taste and how each glass should taste like a symphony of flavours.
Truly one of our favourite moments this year is Olivier describing how each Cuvee is created and how the "ego's" of some vintages need to be managed.
Raise a glass... but not a flute
(that makes sense when you watch this episode)
To Krug Champagne 🥂
About Got Somme:
A podcast for wine lovers who know nothing about what's in the glass. The series will aim to educate listeners on types, tannins and taste to producers, appellations and age.
We speak to the best winemakers in the world finding out how they make the wine that has captured the attention of Master Sommelier Carlos Santos.
Carlos will aim to teach radio announcer and novice wine enthusiast Angus O'Loughlin how to discern a good wine from a bad and empower listeners with a skill set good enough to choose the table wine next time you have friends over.
Chapters:
0:00 - Introduction
1:49 - Olivier was always going to be working with Champagne
3:01 - Harvesting different vineyards

My greatest champagne memory was a vintage Bollinger with pizza at 2am in maida vale. It was my most expensive night out ever as a student!

I want to buy a few editions of Krug to try them out. Could you rank 167-172 editions in your opinion legends?

I love Krug, and I love champagne, but I admit that, with all I know about wine and food, I only discovered this “no flutes” rule recently. But it makes sense. I was never served champagne in a flute, I never had flutes in my cabinet, and whenever you think about wine, you think nose first, lips second. The glass allows the wine to infuse with oxygen and open with its flavor. The shape of the flute constricts the wine, it limits its appetite for oxygen. And same goes for anything! I mean, would you eat white truffles out of a test tube? Anyways, I loved this video, right now I’m looking at the 2008 vintage, 27th edition Rose, and 171 Grande Cuvée Krugs among some other wonderful bottles to choose from (Jacques Selosse Initial Blanc de Blanc, 1990 Dom Perignon, 2015 Cristal, and 1975/1985 Bollinger) for a special dinner coming up, a seafood Michelin Star in Hollywood! I’m going between the 2008 and 171 Grande Cuvée Krug as my top choices.
