RE: Keeping warm. That heated base layer looks great! First and foremost, keep your core warm. Some people go straight to heated gloves because they notice their hands getting numb in the gold. However, the best way to prevent that is to keep your core warm. Your body cuts off blood flow to your extremities to preserve core temperature, and that's what governs your hands getting numb. Wearing a wind-breaking outer layer does a lot to help, so a good way to stay warm is to put your rain gear on, even if it's not raining.

Heated hand grips trick your mind into thinking you're warm though. There is a big margin between feeling cold and it being dangerous, and that's right where heated hand grips make life nice. I've been on rides in 48 degrees in a perf leather jacket with a tshirt, but my handgrips were warming my hands so my brain went "huh...hands are toasty...must be fine."

That is a braid that I haven't seen before. It looks neat and easy. One thing that you forgot to mention about braiding your hair. Alway start the braid below where the bottom of the helmet will be. If any part of the braid ends up in or too close to the helmet, it will be tight or uncomfortable in other ways if the helmet is sized correctly. This also applies to other helmets, like ski helmets. When I had a motorcycle with high frequency vibration I found a pair of gloves with gel pads in the palm of the gloves helped my problem of numb hands. On the USB port(s) look for the fast charging standard. It can charge phones quicker. (The phone needs to also have the standard to truly benefit from the standard.) Some low output charges can barely keep up with power use by multiple applications running. One thing additional thing that I carry that you didn't mention is a small flash light or head lamp. Using a phone light is an option. I may just be old fashion. But I will use the excuse that I think of the phone as a backup light source. (I am sure that your dad has a lot of similar excuses.)

I normally travel with a bag with a battery and extra clothes. I recently was riding in the shoulder to skip traffic and hit a bump that cracked my oil pan... Just my $0.02 but either snag a skid plate, or a spare pan. And extra underpants and a towel can be a lifesaver if you don't have rain gear but get rained on.

Here's another hack for you: DIY Homelink Mod for your garage door. One of my fave mods that goes on every bike I own. Buy an extra garage door opener remote (usually $10-30) and program it. Then find a universal kill switch button you like. I use a purty gold anodized one that mounts to my bars, matches the rest of my accessories. Next, pop open the remote and find the two contact points that make the connection when pressing the button. If you don't have a soldering pen or don't feel comfortable with this one, any computer repair shop will do it for you on the cheap, but simply take some wire, such as speaker wire, and attach one wire to each side of the contact. Now connect that wire to your kill switch, smack some velcro on that remote, and tuck it away someplace out of the weather. Now when you come home from a ride, simply push the button on your handlebars and your garage door opens so you can park Spicy Boy. Much better than carrying a remote with you that is prone to getting lost, or having to dig it out of your backpack.
@AntiParallali
@AntiParallali Год назад
Ooo that's an interesting one! Just a heads up if you have any kind of smart home device, you can probably set it to where it opens your garage door when you're within proximity of your house (like within wifi range) that way you don't have to do the mod on all the bikes....but then you'd still need to install a smart garage opener 😂 so maybe it's not any easier

Hotwire makes base layer heated gear that’s fairly priced, you want it to be somewhat form fitting but not skin tight for best results. Atlas throttle lock and breakaway throttle locks are popular throttle locks. (Aka poor man’s cruise control) atlas didn’t work for my scout kept vibrating loose. The breakaway is bulky but holds position and has the added disengage linkage to the front brake along with the thumb button disengagement. Swap any traditional carpet hook and loop Velcro with the dual lock type of Velcro (3m brand is what I use/ recommend). The dual lock lays flatter, no free play aka wiggle, and doesn’t wear out if you repeatedly remove/ reinstall the Velcro’d item.

my main tip for making your ride more comfortable is a Cardo bluetooth set. some people think they would rather buy a helmet with bluetooth included, but i say that's a terrible idea. 1, they have a contract so there's not as much competition to get you the best possible unit. when you choose which unit to buy, manufacturers have to really compete for your business. 2, when something goes wrong, you're stuck with replacing it with the exact same thing, or getting a new helmet. so just make sure, when you buy a helmet, that it has a recessed area near where your ears are. most helmets have it, but not all, so make sure. that's where your speakers will go. and in my opinion, cardo is the best simply because their sound quality and volume are both excellent. even at 80mph, i can clearly hear directions. just remember to turn up your phone's volume independently of the bluetooth unit before you take off. i didn't realize they were separate at first and thought the max volume was crap. anyway, it's nice to have not just because you can clearly hear the gps directions, but also for music. the unit will probably have a radio, but keep in mind that it won't reduce volume for gps instructions unless the music and gps are both coming from the phone. at least, not on current gen. hopefully they'll fix that on future generations because i prefer the radio (yes i know, i'm weird that way).

riding even in heavy rain is not as bad as one would think, sure, it sucks, but at least from a safety stand point the grip is better than oen would imagine and you won't crash if you bring down your speed a bit and just don't "surprise" your bike / your tyres with stupid throttle flicks or anything like that. Basically, if you got waterproof gear you can keep going if you are on a longer ride or travelling.

As an old Sailor; sun rises in East, sets in West (not much use at night I admit) easier than a compass and not effected by magnetic fields. A mod that follows on from your glasses vlog, and could be worth doing, would be ear protection. Generic ear protectors v Motorcycle specific v Custom made. Sadly once the hearing is damaged it is often PERMANENT.

@TheMNB
@TheMNB Год назад
@@AntiParallali it depends on your position from the equator, but it. always rises on the east part... it might be NE or SE, but there's an E in there! I use a dedicated GPS, so signal? Schmignal? I'm getting routed no problem. It also means I keep my phone on my body, which in some situations can be a life saver. Downside: not super cheap (current model is $500) and it helps to be more of a computer nerd for complex route creation using a computer.
@rpontonjr
@rpontonjr Год назад
@@AntiParallali East v. West does not, but how far north or south the sun rises vs. sets does change with the season. More pronounced difference the further you are from the equator. Us people from states with nice, visible mountains tend to take for granted that we can navigate by landmark. When I visit a flat area like parts of Texas, I get a bit disoriented.
@alanbrown5593
@alanbrown5593 Год назад
@@AntiParallali Sort of, the height above the horizon changes (as the earth tilts towards the sun in summer time and away in winter). If, in the morning you have the sun on your right you're facing northwards and in the afternoon southward. Gives a general heading. Also compasses are effected by magnetic fields and metal which can cause them to be less than accurate, but for our needs probably close enough.

Nice video with a lot of useful tips and gadgets to help us riders out! Hooked straight to your battery, the charger will drain your battery. How much and how long before that's an issue is unknown, but I suspect it's draw isn't much. If you put your bike on a battery tender, then there's no worry. Alternatively, you could wire it up with a relay that kicks it on when the ignition is on to alleviate that concern. I've been using a simple SAE USB charger made by BatteryTender. I just plug it in when I need it to an SAE connector I have accessible for battery tenders, heated gear, etc. Then I run the cable to the phone, which I keep in my pocket. I really like the voltage meter on this and the multiple ports, though. You keep sharing these nifty items with us. Garbing is a long established and recognized brand of heated gear. Hard to go wrong with Garbing gear. I prefer to go un powered and use thermal layers, but a thin base would provide better mobility... There you go again, wreaking havoc on my budget! Damn you! Especially since I just got SOAKED all day in Yellowstone a week or two back and at dusk had to ride over an 11k foot tall pass when temps dropped to 33F. I had heated grips, winter gloved, cotton glove liners, thermal liner, an extra sweatshirt as well and damn it was cold. I couldn't even TELL my heated grips were on. I could still move my fingers at least, so it's not the coldest I've ever been, but very close. The worst was many, many moons ago and a shorter ride. But 30 minutes where it's so cold you can't move your fingers seems like 3 hours. I was clutching and braking by moving my arm, lol. Throttle rockers like you showed are nice. I have a Kaoko throttle lock on my F80)GS. It's basically a screw at the end of your bars and you tighten it down to hold the throttle. It's very easy to enable/disable. None of my bikes have cruise control, unfortunately.

personally, i would never wear a heated core piece. be it base layer or jacket or whatever. the only heated piece i use is gloves and it's more than enough for me. if i tried to wear a heated core, i'd die of dehydration from sweating my ass off. i do have a full body insulated rainsuit that i wear when it gets below freezing. i've tried it before at around 38, and i arrived to work drenched in sweat. so for temps between freezing and 50, i just wear my regular two piece thin rainsuit. all it does is keep the wind out, and together with the heated gloves, that's more than enough. above 50, i'm wearing the same thing i would wear on a 110 degree day, except for maybe adding the jacket liner if it's particularly humid that day. rain and cold don't just add up, they multiply. bring along a fresh set of underwear and socks if it's pouring rain, because i've yet to find a rainsuit that's 100% waterproof at 80mph. then again, i've never bought a super expensive one either, so ymmv. but anyway, if it's both cold and raining, go one level up on your cold gear. even if your rainsuit does keep the water out, the moisture greatly amplifies the wind's ability to sap your heat. for me, i like to say i ride no matter what, but if it's below 40 and raining, i'm not too proud to drive under those conditions. of course, i live in texas, so that happens almost never. but it has happened, and i have ridden in it, and it is unpleasant.

Cool hack with the compass, however, aren't they really inaccurate? Sounds like you got lucky with an accurate one since it got you home, but I've seen those in store and compared them with my regular compass, out of 3 I tried, one tells me north-northeast is north, and the other one tells me west-northwest is north, the 3rd one was just somewhere south. I abandoned mission that day.

Really great idea with the compass as when in a parking lot not knowing how to start out. One reason "left and right" directions are not preferred is when we miss a turn for example, turn left then needs to become turn right to get you back on the best path. However, daytime or nighttime NSEW type of directions always remain NSEW regardless.

Hi Lali, Quation from the Netherlands....how do you have flying eyes deliver the glases in the right glass-strength? The right....eye....strength? I hope you know what i mean. Normaly you go to a store and measure youre eyes and deliver your glases....how does this all work with flying eyes?
@AntiParallali
@AntiParallali Месяц назад
You go to your eye doctor and get your vision test. Before I leave I ask for a copy of my prescription. I take a picture of it and I upload that copy to Flying Eyes when I place my order. They have prompts you can follow along once you select an RX pair of glasses. And they will make the lenses for you using your numbers. Alternatively, you can just order a pair of frames from flying eyes without choosing it to be prescription and you can take it back to your eye doctor or anywhere that does glasses and have them put the prescription lenses in the frames. You can bring any pair of frames you like to your doctor and have them send it to a lab to put lenses on. Then if you have vision insurance you submit an out of network claim to them if you ordered the prescription lenses and frames from Flying Eyes and get some money back. Or if you got lenses through your doctor, and your frames through Flying Eyes the doc can submit a claim to your insurance for the lenses and you submit an out of network claim just for the frames.
